Playing Australia - $2.9 million funding round announced

Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced that 19 performing arts companies would enjoy the opportunity to tour live performances across the country, thanks to a $2.9 million Playing Australia funding round. “Every year funding is provided so that great Australian performances can be toured around the country, giving audiences in regional communities the opportunity to see some of the very best of what our performers have to offer,” Mr Garrett said. “One of the benefits of the Playing Australia program is that as well as mainstream works, it supports aspiring companies who do not have the resources to stage big productions. “Regional touring brings a two-way benefit: small, cutting-edge performance companies have the opportunity to showcase their excellence, and regional audiences have the opportunity to see the sorts of exciting new works that they would have once had to travel to a city theatre to experience.

Blayney Primary School 150th Anniversary Art Project

One of the artworks produced by Blaney Primary Scool students

The year six students at Blayney Primary School in the NSW central west decided that art was definitely the most fun you could have at school after their workshops with indigenous artist Nyree Reynolds. Blayney Primary, via Blayney Shire Council, used a Country Arts Support Program (CASP) grant to create artworks for the schools’ 150th Anniversary Celebrations. “A brilliant project and such a great group of kids” said Nyree, who worked with the students over a number of weeks. Both Nyree and the students hugely enjoyed being involved in the project. A series of eight paintings were made by the students during the workshops depicting images from the current and past life of the school and Blayney community and will become part of a permanent display at the school.

This project was supported with a grant from the Regional Arts NSW Country Arts Support Program (CASP).

What's On

Scott Jackson: Coast & Country

Scott Jackson 'Windblown'

Until 12 October, Port Macquarie

The coastal wetlands, beaches and river valleys of the mid north coast have provided inspiration for many of Mid North Coast Scott Jackson’s paintings. “I also like working with various underpainting colours and textures as it can allow some very interesting effects to come through to the upper layers of paint,” says Scott. “Oils are particularly good for this when working with transparent colours and I'm especially intrigued by 'sgraffito' or scratching back effects that can be achieved through layers of colour and as a method of incorporating detail in thick painted textures." Scott has been exhibiting and selling paintings on the Mid North Coast for over 20 years and his paintings and prints hang in many private collections in Australia and overseas. Scott has also been invited to exhibit at the Florence Biennale, Italy. At the Dovetail Design Furniture & Gallery, 5 Merrigal Rd. Tel 02 6566 0182 Website www.scottjacksonartworks.com.au

Batucada Sound Machine

Batucada Sound Machine

6 October, Byron Bay

Batucada Sound Machine are forging new paths in global music! Their massive mix of Brazilian beats with afrobeat, funk and hiphop has taken them throughout Australasia and the UK, including gigs at WOMAD Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Loosely translated, ‘batucada’ means percussive samba jam, which aptly summarises BSM’s musical roots. BSM began in 2003 when five passionate drummers met once a month in the dimly lit lounge bar of Galatos nightclub in Auckland to experiment fusing batucada with more local beats and influences. Before long, a talented group of diverse musicians had joined in and the band had grown to 13 members. Applause Festival

18 October, Albury

This one day festival brings entertainment to the people with street theatre and busking. Unlike any other type of performance, busking is unique in style with musicians, performing artists and other disciplines showcasing their talent on the pavement. The Applause Festival takes on many guises: creators of contemporary art, curators of fine music, characters of circus and contributers of cryptic performances. Living statues move before your eyes, circus performers juggle, tumble, spin and cycle and the music transforms and transports you with an eclectic mix of jazz, funk, Celtic, rock, country, swing and acoustic pieces. There is no other form of artistic expression that is more diverse, action orientated, spontaneous or accessible. There is not cost, just show your appreciation by contributing to the buskers hat during or at the end of the show. Program online. Dean St, Albury. Website www.alburycentral.com/applause

Art Unlimited

The giant swan in Dunedoo

24 - 26 October, Dunedoo

In a one pub, one street country town, a fifteen foot black swan is bound to make a splash. Tourists may wonder why this bird of prehistoric proportion dominates the streetscape of Dunedoo. While Dunedoo may not have made it on to the international map for its giant swan or its proposed, but rejected, giant dunny, Art Unlimited is showing great promise. The panel is looking forward to judging artists’ wide ranging interpretation of this year’s theme 'My Landscape'. A first place prize of $2,000 will be awarded to each of the three categories including photography, ceramics and hanging art. There will also be a People’s Choice Award. ARTback – sculptures of The Long Paddock

The Long Paddock – Cobb Highway touring route is a tourism initiative of five councils: Murray Shire, Deniliquin Shire, Conargo Shire, Hay Shire and Central Darling Shire. The touring route covers 610 kms from Echuca-Moama in south western NSW to Wilcannia in western NSW. The touring route was launched in October 2006 and has 47 interpretive panels along the route that tell the story of the pioneers, drovers, shearers , transportation and indigenous culture of the region. The Long Paddock has recently received funding from the Australian Government to install one public artwork in each of the participating shires (total five sites) in 2009. This is an amazing opportunity to be involved with the world’s largest open air gallery. The works, although produced by individual artists will be marketed as an entire collection telling the stories of the Long Paddock. The Long Paddock has produced an Artist Brief for each site. The public artworks will need to tie in with the five themes of the Long Paddock, and the information gathered at community consultations held in each shire.
