New Funding for Indigenous Arts Projects in the Northern Rivers

Minister Garrett at the 3 Rivers Aboriginal Art Space in July

Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced an Australian Government commitment of over $350,000 to Arts Northern Rivers to support Indigenous arts development in the region. Minister Garrett visited the newly opened 3 Rivers Aboriginal Art Space in Lismore to make the announcement. Arts Northern Rivers CEO Lois Randall said, "We are thrilled that Minister Garrett has met with local artists to make this announcement in person. This clearly shows that the artists' vision for an Indigenous Art Centre in the region is being taken seriously by the Government." Ms Randall explained that the grant would fund wages for an Indigenous Arts Development Officer and running costs for the 3 Rivers Art Space for three years. The money is part of the Federal Government's new injection of $10 million in NACIS funding to support a sustainable Indigenous arts sector. A second grant, from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, will support wages for a new Indigenous Arts Business Manager at Arts Northern Rivers.

Arts and Health in the Central West

Belly casting in Bathurst

Arts and health connections continue to be a strong focus for Arts OutWest. While the Bathurst Arts and Heath program is now into its second year other centres in the region are starting to explore arts and health partnerships.
The team involved in the redevelopment of Orange’s Bloomfield Hospital are looking at ways to develop an arts and wellbeing program as part of the redevelopment. The belly casting and painting work that was so successful with young pregnant women in the Bathurst area is now being extended to Cowra through a grant from the Aboriginal Infant Maternal Health Strategy. Meanwhile the work with the palliative care community through the blog project ‘Waving Not Drowning’ has attracted funding to continue. The Bathurst Arts and Health Program also received some excellent news: the program has been short-listed for a GWAHS Health Award. Stage one of the Bathurst Arts and Health Program was funded by the Regional Arts Fund and the Australia Council for the Arts and continues to be funded by Greater Western Area Health Service.

New Flying Fruit Fly Circus Training Centre

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus in action

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus (FFFC) has farewelled its Hovell Street home in Albury—affectionately known as 'the Y'—in preparation for the site's redevelopment as a world-class circus centre and training facility. The FFFC has received funds from the Federal Government to undertake a $4.86 million redevelopment project, which includes the partial demolition of the existing 80 year old building. In July the timber floor from Hovell Street was relocated to a temporary site in Lavington to allow the circus to keep training while the project is underway. FFFC General Manager Chris Pidd commented on the scale of the operation, saying "When moving home most people fill one removal truck, we have five removal trucks. We have to take the rig equipment, the trapezes and the mats we use for tumbling." Performers, trainers and circus staff are eagerly anticipating the new training facility, which combines a large hall with separate rehearsal space and a two-level administration block. The FFFC is Australia's only full-time youth circus school. Read more about the school at www.fruitflycircus.com.au

Poetry on the Boards venue a success!

2009 'Poetry on the Boards' poets

The Grenfell Henry Lawson Festival of Arts is delighted to report that the new Poetry on the Boards venue was a great success at this year's June Festival. Hosted in the historic Grenfell Railway Station for the first time, the event opened with a set from the Grenfell Town and District Band which proved a perfect artistic springboard for the poetic imagery to follow. The combination of ‘walk up’ poetry and surrounding rail history opens the door for Poetry on the Boards to expand its connections with Henry Lawson and his many rail references in story and verse. So mark the Saturday morning of the June 2010 long weekend in your diaries for next year's historic celebration of the spoken word! ArtStart Out West

ArtStart Out West

The ArtStart program, an initiative funded by TAFE NSW, is being well received in regional NSW by participants, parents and workshop facilitators alike. These projects offer local youth an out-of-the-ordinary, creative and artistic opportunity in an interactive, fun and supportive environment. The first week of the July school holidays saw Sydney-based artist Chris Tamm visit Grenfell for two days of street inspired art workshops. The Grenfell scout hall was quickly transformed into a dynamic workshop space where participants displayed their artistic flair in stencil art design and production. ArtStart facilitator Sarah Parsons travelled to Condobolin and Parkes to deliver performance workshops. Parsons said, “The best moments in Condobolin were seeing up to 40 kids of all ages and backgrounds helping each other learn new circus skills. We had young people who had never been on stage before performing intricate mimes. There was team building, collaboration, skill sharing and peer encouragement from all the kids involved. Parkes was awesome—incredibly talented, friendly and enthusiastic kids made the four days so fun.” For more details on current or upcoming ArtStart projects please visit www.artstart.com.au

Publishers are looking for exciting voices working confidently with vital and vigorously imagined material. Writers who are awarded a Varuna Publishers Fellowship have one week's dedicated writing time at the Varuna Writers' House in Katoomba to work on their project.
