Tamworth Country Music Festival

2010 Tamworth Country Music Festival

15 - 24 January, Tamworth

Possibly the biggest party in the whole of Australia, the Tamworth Country Music Festival is celebrated for ten days from mid-January each year. If you include the ten day Countdown to the festival you could Texas Twostep for twenty days straight and you wouldn’t be the only one! In January, the population of Tamworth almost doubles in size to 100,000 and the festival generates more than $40 million to the local economy. They come by ute, bus, train and plane to the large inland city on the banks of the Peel River. With some 120 different venues showing about 4,000 performances, over 500 buskers on the ‘Boulevard of Dreams’ (Peel Street) and so many visitors, it’s a wonder that country hospitality isn’t stretched to breaking point – but the smiles on the locals are as wide as ever. Regional Arts Fund delivers 20 new projects in NSW

Regional Arts Fund

A total of $271,600 will go towards 20 new projects in regional, rural and remote New South Wales in 2010 through the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund. The list of successful projects encompasses a broad spectrum of art forms including film and video, music, dance, literature, visual arts and theatre. Communities across the state – from White Cliffs, Condobolin and Tottenham in the west, to Lismore in the Northern Rivers and Berridale in the far south – will benefit from this funding. "We received a record number of applications for the 2010 round of funding with almost $1.3 million requested," said Elizabeth Rogers, CEO of Regional Arts NSW. "The applications were of a very high standard and we were delighted that the panel allocated funds to seven groups who have applied to the fund for the first time. The range of projects funded demonstrates the variety of ways that the Regional Arts Fund supports arts and cultural development in the diverse regions of this state." A full list of funded projects is available for download from the Regional Arts NSW website here.

'Quicks' support for Arts in Health and Wellbeing

Conference attendees (clockwise from left): Christine McMillan, Judy Thomson, Dawn Thirlaway, Meg Larkin (RANSW), Annette Eassie (RANSW), Richard Holloway, Yvonne Kiely

The skills of regional artists working in the health sector and regional health workers involved in arts projects received a boost this quarter through nine Quick Response grants enabling recipients to attend the recent international arts and health conference in Port Macquarie, titled The Art of Good Health and Wellbeing. Grants were awarded to six participants from the Mid North Coast, two from the Northern Rivers and one from the Central West, and assisted with attendance at the intensive pre-conference training for musicians and visual artists as well as workshops with world authorities from the UK and USA. Conference feedback was overwhelmingly positive and reflected a genuine appreciation of accessible, quality training and the resulting skills and confidence participants are able to apply to regional arts programs. A full list of 'Quicks' recipients for this quarter is available on the Regional Arts NSW website here. Please note due to all funds from the October to December 2009 quarter now being expended, the Quick Response Grant Program is currently closed and will re-open on 1 January 2010.

Indigenous arts research in NSW

Meetings, workshops and field research undertaken by Regional Arts NSW from January 2009

Research conducted by Regional Arts NSW this year indicates that there is considerable Indigenous arts activity in the state. Such activity is establishing growing recognition in some regions but in others is going unnoticed because it is not well documented, not well resourced and does not enjoy a high national profile, as per Indigenous arts in Central Australia. Throughout 2009, Regional Arts NSW’s Research Officer Ruben Allas has been developing a statewide ‘picture’ of Indigenous arts activity in NSW, by mapping current regional NSW creative arts assets (Indigenous arts centres, artists and arts organisations) and tracking government investments and developments in the Indigenous creative arts sector. Since July 2009 funding assistance from Arts NSW has extended the research to include the training and educational needs of Indigenous artists and arts organisations. This research significantly contributes to our knowledge and understanding of Indigenous arts in NSW and provides a strong foundation on which to establish a viable and sustainable Indigenous creative arts sector in NSW. The findings of Ruben’s mapping research is available on the Regional Arts NSW website at www.regionalartsnsw.com.au/projects/indigenous_research.html

Arts Northern Rivers community arts call out

Arts Northern Rivers Visual Arts Network

Arts Northern Rivers seeks to improve its database of community artists living in the Northern Rivers, and to profile their work on the Visual Arts Network (VAN) website. We are regularly asked to recommend professional artists who can be commissioned to work with the community to facilitate and project manage community arts projects. These projects may be in any media including community public artworks, ephemeral works, youth arts projects, performing arts and digital art. Generally clients are seeking experienced artists who are able to coordinate the administrative side of a project including managing the budget and who enjoy working with young people and the general community. We therefore invite experienced community artists to consider registering on the Arts Northern Rivers database if they have not already done so, and subscribing to the VAN website here.

Bathurst's Fossil Gallery develops virtual classroom

Students in the Fossil Gallery

Taking an eleven metre Tyrannosaurus Rex skeleton on tour to schools across NSW is not an option for the Australian Fossil and Mineral Museum in Bathurst. Instead, the Museum's Fossil Gallery has established a video conferencing virtual classroom. The new initiative aims to help school students in remote areas of western NSW overcome regional disadvantage and isolation by providing them with ongoing access to the museum's education program, specimen collections and visiting speakers. In late November, for example, 235 students from twelve schools across NSW visited the museum via the virtual classroom to take part in a creative writing project with author Paul Stafford. Called 'Scattered Bones', the project involved students learning about dinosaurs and other specimens from museum staff, then using this material to develop story plans and narratives in discussion with Paul. Students will go on to complete their stories in 'real life' classrooms, before returning to the virtual classroom to share their finished stories with Paul and other students across the West. To find out more about the virtual classroom please contact the Museum: Tel 02 6331 5511, Website www.somervillecollection.com.au

Regional Arts Australia announces new strategic direction

RAA brochure: 'Creating a better life for regional Australians'

Regional Arts Australia (RAA) has launched a new brochure describing its strategic goals for the next five years. Titled Creating a better life for regional Australians, the brochure is the culmination of a national consultation process which saw communities across regional Australia meet with RAA consultant Anne Dunn in mid-2009 to discuss the role of arts and culture in community development. The consultation process was followed by a National Roundtable Conference in Canberra in November, where a diverse group of peak bodies from the community sector met to debate and build on consultation outcomes. President of RAA Julie Boyd says, "with over 85% of RAA constituents believing that the arts play a vital role in community wellbeing and entertainment, and 85% also advising that partnerships between the arts and other organisations are happening within their communities, it’s time to get our heads together for some combined action to create better lives for regional Australians." Launched by Arts Minister Peter Garrett during a speech to the National Press Club on 27 October, this forum gives all Australians an opportunity to help shape our cultural future. Mr Garrett identified three key themes for consideration: keeping culture strong; engaging the community; and powering the young. These key points, along with other ideas, are expanded more fully in the forum’s discussion framework. The National Cultural Policy web forum is a place to share your thoughts, whether you are talking about cultural issues in your region or a grand national vision. With your help, the Australian government will create a policy which celebrates and strengthens our culture. 2008-09 a strong year for Australian productions

Screen Australia

Arts Minister Peter Garrett has confirmed that 2008-09 was a strong year for Australian production of film and TV drama. The Drama Production Survey, released by Screen Australia in November, reports 38 features, 653 hours of television and nine foreign projects that had post, digital or visual effects work in Australia with a combined value of $688 million. Notably, the value of production in NSW was $434 million – 63% of the national total and the best result since 2003-04. “The survey measures annual production activity through local budget expenditure for Australian, co-production and foreign projections shot in Australia and the results show just how strong our local film and TV industry has proved to be in the last year," Mr Garrett said. "This is excellent news for both our economy and our community, as we are seeing more stories about our own Australian experiences in our cinemas and on our televisions and celebrated right around the world.” The Drama Production Survey can be downloaded from the Screen Australia website at www.screenaustralia.gov.au

Country Energy Art Prize winner announced

Graham Lupp, winner of the 2009 Country Energy Art Prize

Graham Lupp of Bathurst has won the 2009 Country Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting. Lupp’s work, Hen and Chicken Lane, was selected from a record 49 finalists' works by leading art market analyst and critic, Michael Reid, at the Lismore Regional Gallery. Depicting a scene south of Bathurst in the NSW Central West, Reid said Hen and Chicken Lane showed “confidence and an obvious technical quality. The competition came down to three very strong works but what made Graham’s piece stand out was the trees – they took on a sinewist, abstract texture, in what is otherwise a traditional landscape." The winner of the $5,000 Country Energy Youth Encouragement Award was Erin Nalder of Moree for her piece Many Faces of Moree’s Landscape, depicting views of wide open farmland painted at different times of the day. The Country Energy Art Prize will be exhibited at the Lismore Regional Gallery until 12 December. From Mountain Creek to Mozart

Rachel Scott, Nicole Thomson and Amanda Hodder performing in the Woolshed

On 21 October, ‘Mountain Creek’ Woolshed became Hillston’s newest concert venue. Rachel Scott is a Sydney-based cellist who has been mentoring a music program at Hillston Central School for the last three years, with support from the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. Rachel visits the school once a term, and in fourth term decided to do something a little bit different. With the generous help of Griffith City Council, Thrifty Griffith and Rex Airlines, the staff at the school and a few private benefactors, she put on a concert featuring Nicole Thomson (soprano), Amanda Hodder (piano) and herself on the cello. Titled 'From Mountain Creek to Mozart', the concert was a resounding success. “I’ve never been to something like this before, and I thought it’d be really horrible. I loved it. Every minute of it...” said one farmer. Stay tuned for news of next year’s concert!

New Beginning launched at the Albury Library Museum

Filmmakers Jared Younger and Helen Newman

On Thursday 3 December – International Day of People with a Disability (IDPWD) – the short film New Beginning was launched at the Albury LibraryMuseum. New Beginning is a culmination of a film mentorship project between Jared Younger, who has an acquired brain injury, and filmmaker Helen Newman, which allowed Jared to create, direct and produce his first short film. Jared’s film is a nature/science documentary and consists of a montage of shots filmed at a variety of locations. The film explores nature and in particular beginnings and endings. “Working with Jared has been delightful,” says filmmaker, Helen Newman. "His ideas are interesting and he keeps coming up with new ways of seeing things and he has shown great aptitude for the editing process”. The mentorship program is a flow on from the dis/assemble dance project, which creates contemporary multimedia dance works for dancers with and without disabilities. The mentorship has been managed by Murray Arts with funding provided by the Department of Ageing, Disability & Home Care through the Don’t Dis My Ability funding program, and TAFE NSW through ArtStart 2009 funding.
