Blake Prize Announces New Award Category
This year’s Blake Prize is again set to provide artists with a challenge to explore the religious and spiritual in art. The Blake Society has teamed up with the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) to award a $5,000 Blake Prize for Human Justice. This new award category will acknowledge and promote the work of artists that have addressed issues of human justice. The MUA’s Paddy Crumlin said, “The MUA has a long history of supporting social justice and human rights for communities both in Australia and internationally. As part of this tradition, the MUA has worked with artists and filmmakers since the 1950s to challenge the perceptions we have about the Society in which we live. Our partnership with the Blake Society, allows the MUA to continue this tradition and provide artists with an opportunity to contribute to ongoing social debate.” Rev. Rod Pattenden, Chair of the Blake Society said. “We are excited about the expanding relevance of the Blake Prize in these troubled and changing times. Our culture needs people of imagination to redefine what it is to be human in the face of the these challenges and extend that into the territory of spirituality, justice and human hope. The Blake is proving to be a means of refreshing the social relevance of contemporary art.”

Resale royalty response tabled in parliament
The Government’s response to an inquiry into the Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Bill 2008 was tabled in Parliament on 28 May. “The resale royalty scheme is one of the Government’s key election commitments and will give artists the right to earn ongoing income from their work – long after the initial sale,” said Arts Minister Peter Garrett. “Artists will receive five per cent of the sale price when their artworks are resold through the art market. This is an important right for artists as the value of their works can often increase – sometimes substantially – over time and it is only fair that they and their descendants should share in the growing appreciation of their work. “Similar programs are operating in over 50 other countries around the world. Mr Garrett said the Government has accepted a number of the recommendations of the review by the Standing Committee on Climate Change, Water, Environment and the Arts. “In its response to the review the Government has agreed to review the scheme within five years. It will also expand the definition of an artwork to include forms of fine art textiles, installations, fine art jewellery, artist’s books, carvings, and multimedia artworks."

Sydney Symphony Drought Relief Concert
26 June, Albury
27 - 28 June, Wagga Wagga
Join the Sydney Symphony for a delightful evening at the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre. This concert begins on the wind-swept coast of Scotland, where Mendelssohn was captivated by the weird echoes of 'Fingal's Cave' and inspired to write his rapturous Hebrides Overture. It finishes in the countryside south of Prague, where Dvorak composed his eighth symphony, full of bohemian dance rhythms and the soft light of the late dusk. And in between, Sydney Symphony present a musical puzzle - the orchestra with a solo quartet, playing a work ascribed to Mozart but not 'discovered' until long after his death. Is it really his? There's no way to know, but is sounds ravishing enough to be. The Sydney Symphony, supported by NSW Government and corporate partners, will perform the Wagga Wagga concerts as a fundraiser with ticket proceeds helping the many people affected by the ongoing drought in NSW through the drought relief programs of Anglicare, The Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army and St Vincent De Paul. There will also be a concerte at the Albury Entertainment Centre, on 26 June, 8pm. Venue and ticketing details online. www.sydneysymphony.com

The Regional Ten Minute Play festival
26 - 28 June, Bingara
The North West Theatre Company will conduct The Regional Ten Minute Play Festival at the ROXY Theatre in Bingara. Following on from the Regional Variety Concert, 'ROXY where the heart is!' presented in March, the NWTC is keen to see schools, theatre companies, and interested clubs and societies, enter their 'theatrical performance pieces' at the June Festival. The school entries are nearly full, with their performances scheduled for Friday 26 June. Saturday afternoon and evening are open for non-school performance groups. A Sunday matinee will then showcase the best selection of both the school and open categories with an award given to the 'Best Performance' of the Festival. The performances do not have to be complete pieces. They can be an excerpt from a play, musical, dance, poetry or prose. It is important that some sense of continuity exits within the performance, but it does not need to have a story line.
