Innovative sponsorship model brings Katie Noonan to Cowra

Katie Noonan

7 November, Cowra

Cowra Arts Council is again using its innovative share-risk sponsorship model to fund a concert this month by Australian folk and blues singer Katie Noonan. This is a model that could work well in other regional centres, especially now that the Guarantee Against Loss (GAL) funding schemes are no longer available. Each share-risk package costs $500 and with this model of sponsorship the sponsor receives their stake back in full, whether the event breaks even or makes a profit. In the event of a small loss the sponsor will still get back the balance of their sponsorship. A similar scheme was used to sponsor the Oz Opera production of Madam Butterfly in Cowra last year, and all sponsors received their sponsorship back in full. The Cowra Arts Council is already planning an Oz Opera performance of La Traviata for 2010, funded in the same manner. The cost of the Katie Noonan concert, to be held in the new hanger at Cowra Airport, is around $30,000 and the Arts Council is confident that all tickets will be sold. A win-win for the whole community! Katie Noonan plays Cowra Airport Hanger at 8pm on Saturday 7 November. For ticketing details please contact Cowra Information Centre: Tel 02 6342 4333

Ivanhoe artists win first prize at international festival

An image from 'Outhouse'

Brian Cohen and Tara Prowse – working together as digital art team TRAX – have won first place at the 2009 Future Places international digital medial festival in Portugal for their work Outhouse. This sensational achievement was lauded by festival organisers, who said, "This project is not just a humorous gimmick but a serious tool for enhancing the knowledge, development and preservation of community. Combining innovation, creativity, originality and digital technology, Outhouse unites yesterday and today in a way that cuts to the heart of the ongoing mission of the Future Places Festival." Outhouse developed from a three month Artist in Residence project initiated by Outback Theatre for Young People in partnership with West Darling Arts, which Brian and Tara undertook in Ivanhoe from June this year. Brian and Tara made a real impact on the Ivanhoe community, engaging with local youth and the Paarkantji Elders through several art projects including the short film Bush Cubby, the multimedia play Under Me Skin and their 'storycatching booth'. Brian and Tara will return to Ivanhoe in 2010 to continue their project. Read all about TRAX on their blog at www.trax.org. Indigenous art Commercial Code of Conduct completed

Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct

Following extensive national consultations, the Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct has been completed. The Code is designed to strengthen fair and ethical trade in the Indigenous visual art industry, specifying a set of minimum standards for dealers, agents and artists, and defining terms of trade, rights and responsibilities for the sale and management of artworks. Arts Minister Peter Garrett has welcomed the Code, saying “A Code of Conduct governing fair and ethical trade in the commercial Indigenous visual art industry is vitally important for the future viability of the sector. This Code helps Indigenous artists negotiate fair pay for their work and give buyers greater certainty of an artwork’s origin and ownership and I urge all commercial galleries and art centres dealing in Indigenous Australian art to sign up to the Code once it becomes operational.” The implementation of a code of conduct was a key recommendation of the 2007 Senate Inquiry report into the Indigenous visual arts and craft sector, which revealed unscrupulous and illegal commercial practices towards Indigenous artists. The Code is voluntary and will be implemented initially for a two year, self-regulatory period. Read the new Code of Conduct here.

New national arts and disability strategy

Cultural Ministers Council

On 9 October the Cultural Ministers Council agreed to the National Arts and Disability Strategy, which sets out a vision for improving access and participation in artistic and cultural activities for people with disabilities. The Strategy provides a framework within which jurisdictions can assess and improve existing activities. It also identifies new priority projects that could be progressed as national initiatives or by individual jurisdictions. The Strategy sets out eight underlying principles that will guide its implementation. These address issues such as the right for all Australians to have access to, and participate in, arts and cultural activities, and the need for people with a disability to be involved in the decisions that affect them. Arts Minister Peter Garrett and the Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities, Bill Shorten, commended the Cultural Ministers Council. “Arts and culture enriches us all – and with one in five Australians experiencing some form of disability, it has been an imperative to include and enable everyone who wishes to engage with such a vital part of Australian life,” said Mr Garrett. “We now strongly recommend that state and local governments, venue owners and others review this important document and incorporate it into their future planning and approach.” The Strategy is available online at www.cmc.gov.au

NSW leads in private sector arts funding

Australia Business Arts Foundation

New South Wales leads Australia in business sponsorships of the arts and donations to the arts, according to the second annual Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF) Survey of Private Sector Support for the Arts, released on 1 October. New South Wales ($72.1 million) and Victoria (64.1 million) received the lion’s share of private sector income – 68 per cent of the national total of $202 million. Queensland moved into third place with $18.7 million (9 per cent). Western Australian arts organisations received $18.1 million, South Australia $13 million, the ACT $8.8 million, Northern Territory $3.8 million and Tasmania $3.6 million. AbaF’s survey incorporates financial data from 276 arts organisations across the country. AbaF asked how much they received in the 2007-8 financial year in sponsorships (cash and in-kind) and donations. Based on these figures AbaF calculated a total for the whole Australian arts sector. The sector that received the most private sector support was performing arts ($77.8M) followed by art galleries ($50.7M). The AbaF survey is the only comprehensive national study of private sector support for the arts. A summary of the findings is available online at www.abaf.org.au.

‘6’ on tour for the Awakenings Festival

The dis/assemble dance group warms up on stage at the Wesley Performing Arts Centre in Horsham

On Tuesday 20 October 23 dancers, staff and carers from the dis/assemble dance project departed Albury Wodonga to tour the work ‘6’ by Tim Podesta to Horsham in Western Victoria. The dis/assemble dance group were invited to perform ‘6’ at the Awakenings Festival – Australia’s only regional disability arts festival. The dis/assemble dance project is a partnership between Skills Innovative Training Enterprises (SITE); Artists Tim Podesta, Margot McCallum and Helen Newman; and Murray Arts. The project creates contemporary multimedia dance works for dancers with and without disabilities. Choreographer Tim Podesta said, “This was a great opportunity for the dancers involved in the project to experience going on tour and performing the work to a new audience.” Murray Arts General Manager Karen Gardner said, “Taking 14 dancers plus support staff – a total of 23 people – on tour is an enormous logistical challenge. Everyone worked really hard to make the show happen.” '6' is based on the popular theory of ‘six degrees of separation’ and network theories. The theory is that anyone on the planet can be connected to any other person through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries.  A documentary about the project will be aired on the Aurora Community TV Channel at 6.10pm on Sunday 6 December and will be followed by a screening of the full performance of ‘6’. Deni Delivers!

2009 Play on the Plains Festival

Organisers of this year's Play on the Plains Festival and Deni Ute Muster, held in Deniliquin on the first weekend of October, were delighted by its success. Not only did the Festival deliver top-class entertainment but it also brought with it substantial rainfall for the drought affected area. Cool conditions failed to dampen the spirits of over 20,000 attendees who travelled from around Australia and beyond to be part of this iconic event. This year a new Guinness World Record was created in the RM Williams Bull Ride Arena for the largest gathering of people wearing blue shearer’s singlets. Chris Sheedy, official Guinness World Records adjudicator, was present to officially sanction the record which saw 2,230 people gathered in blue singlets. “There’s something very special about this iconic Australian record happening right here in Deni. And to have people from all over Australia travelling here and being part of this new Guinness World Record makes it even more amazing,” said Sheedy. The rain on Friday night did not deter the thousands of fans who enjoyed the Country Energy Main Concert with Troy Cassar-Daley, Adam Harvey, The Sunny Cowgirls, Catherine Britt and Kirsty Lee Akers. Saturday saw thousands more patrons rolling through the gates for the highly anticipated evening concert featuring Powderfinger, The Angels and others. Festival pictures along with preliminary details of the 2010 event are now available online at www.deniutemuster.com.au

"Brooding, gothic, and unhealthily co-dependent, the Kransky are deservedly an institution" — The Melbourne Age. Narek Galleries | Off the loom and out of the furnace

'Middle Lake' by Belinda Ramson

20 November - 4 January, Tanja

Off the loom and out of the furnace features works of woven tapestry by Belinda Ramson, hand blown glass by Tom Rowney and glass and silvery jewellery by Sophia Emmett. Ramson’s eminent career as a tapestry weaver is at the foundation of the short history of tapestry in Australia. Her recent tapestries include landscapes of the Tanja area including Middle Lagoon, Mogareeka and her own home and studio near Bithry Inlet. Rowney's skills in blown and hot-formed glass are so legendary that he is in demand as a gaffer by other glass artists on their more ambitious pieces. Here we see his passion for the Venetian approach in a series of hand-blown drinking vessels. Emmett follows two paths in her studio practice, making a range of glass jewellery and exploring spatial relationships and surfaces in hand-blown glass forms. For this exhibition Sophia has made a series of exquisite hand-blown, cut and polished glass and nylon silver necklaces. Join the artists for drinks at the Gallery from 6-8pm on Saturday 21 November. At Narek Galleries, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Rd, Tanja. For further information please contact Karen O'Clery: Tel 02 6494 0112, Email info@narekgalleries.com

Museum of the Riverina | The Boy from Wagga Wagga

Bill Kerr: The Boy from Wagga Wagga

Until 17 January, Wagga Wagga

A new exhibition at the Museum of the Riverina celebrates the extraordinary radio, stage and screen career of local legend Bill Kerr. The exhibition features never before seen film and theatre photography, original posters and memorabilia that are of great local and national significance. Born in Wagga Wagga, Bill Kerr was a child star and grew up performing in local musical theatre, revues and eisteddfods. In the late 1940s he shot to international fame on British radio, billed as the 'The Boy from Wagga Wagga'. This catch-cry struck an instant chord with the post-war British audience, who thought of Wagga Wagga as a comically surreal, end of the earth, magical place. With unprecedented access to Bill Kerr’s personal archives this exhibition includes theatre posters from the 1940s, film posters, sheet music, costumes, photographs and original letters from Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan, Harry Secombe and other luminaries of British film and theatre. At the Museum’s Historic Council Chambers Site, Cnr Morrow & Baylis St, Wagga Wagga. For further information please contact Sally Gissing, Education and Public Programs Officer: Tel 02 6926 9654, Email gissing.sally@wagga.nsw.gov.au
