Bellingen Global Carnival

Bellingen Global Carnival

2 - 4 October, Bellingen

A landmark date on the Australian festival calendar, the Bellingen Global Carnival is all about celebrating cultural diversity through music and the arts. The 2009 carnival upholds that tradition with a line-up encompassing both traditional and modern music from around the world. A highlight this year is South Africa's Hugh Masekela. Forced to leave his home for 17 years due to apartheid Masekela fell in with an international jazz crowd, performing with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis and Paul Simon before writing the unofficial anthem for the Free Nelson Mandela movement. Holding things down for the European gypsy-rock contingent is Paprika Balkanicus, fresh from a tour with The Cat Empire. With a host of locals also on the bill it's little wonder this is one of the nation's favourite festivals! At Bellingen Showgrounds, Darkwood Rd, Bellingen. The highly detailed images depict the creatures that are threatened and endangered. Fact is interwoven with fiction to create a visually captivating and educational book for young readers. Missing is a great story and a powerful resource for parents and educators to help young people think about their impact on the environment. Australia joins UNESCO convention on cultural diversity

UNESCO

The UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions promotes respect and dialogue between cultures and recognises the importance of protecting the diversity of cultural expressions that exist around the world. In September Arts Minister Peter Garrett announced that Australia had become a party to the Convention. The Convention affirms the right of state parties to protect and promote a diversity of cultural expressions. It recognises the value of cultural goods, services and activities as carriers of meaning and identity and their integral role in sustainable cultural and economic development. The Convention also promotes international dialogue and cooperation in protecting cultural expressions, particularly those in immediate danger or at risk of extinction. Under the Convention, Australia is required to report every four years to the Intergovernmental Committee on measures taken to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions in its territory and at the international level. ArtStart starts media careers

ArtStart participants

The ArtStart program in the state’s Central West is giving young music fans in Orange tools and contacts for promoting their own events and getting the most out of their local media. Recently ArtStart brought together the Arts OutWest communications officer, Orange Regional Conservatorium’s promotions and events coordinator and the chief of staff of the local newspaper to work with and mentor the young organisers of the Freshly Plucked Festival. The festival organisers, in their late teens and early 20s, picked the brains of these industry experts at a one day workshop on media, marketing and sponsorship. “The experience has probably been just as useful to us, as the ‘professionals’, as it has to the young people. I now know a lot more about how this age group are communicating, and they’re now skilled up in how to communicate with the media,” said Arts OutWest communications officer Maryanne Jacques. The industry mentors will stay ‘just a phone call away’ over the next few months as the annual alternative music festival takes shape. For further information please contact Arts OutWest: Tel 02 6338 4657. ArtStart is a TAFE NSW program.

Meagan Jacobs | Embellish

Artwork by Meagan Jacobs

2 - 30 October, Ulladulla

South Coast artist Meagan Jacobs invites you to view her latest exhibition Embellish, a journey through musically inspired abstracts and imagined landscapes that capture the spirit of the Milton/Ulladulla area. Jacobs says of her work, "The natural environment with its fragility and transience has become a significant part of my continuing artistic journey, providing a wealth of inspiration. Taking time to absorb the 'feel' of the landscape then preferring to work intuitively back in the studio allows imaginative scenes to be woven, explorations in technique and many mishaps to take place along the way." Jacobs' boards and canvases are textured, layered and etched, reflecting the antiquity of the land, stone weathered sgraffito lines, reoccurring natural patterns and erosion. At Ulladulla Guest House Art Gallery, 39 Burrill Street, Ulladulla. For further information please email mello1@aapt.net.au. This is an Escape ArtFEST 2009 event.

Titled Past and Present the exhibition uses form and transformation to connect the richness and depth of the past to the present moment. Onto this timeless canvas I add a contemporary story using dry glazes and textured layers to conjure images of landscape, from the lime green lush of my immediate environment to the Australian red earth, sea and sun. Nymagee Outback Music Festival | A Day in the Dirt

Nymagee Outback Music Festival

31 October, Nymagee

A Day in the Dirt is a music festival designed and operated by artists. Professional musicians – some established, some set to explode on the national scene – donate their time and energy to create a day of musical celebrations for the bush folk of mid-western NSW. This year co-directors Andrew Hull and Tonchi McIntosh have assembled a line-up that would be the envy of any music festival in Australia, including Neil Murray, The Re-Mains, Den Hanrahan, The Junes, Jackie Marshall, Jeff Gibson, The Lonely Horse Band, Van Walker, Leah Flanaghan and Liz Stringer. Says McIntosh, "This year we will have artists who appear on television, have won ARIA awards, are regulars on Triple J and who tour internationally, but they still see the support they can offer Nymagee as important. In addition we are receiving wonderfully generous support from local business, Arts Councils, local volunteers and even government agencies. That’s a great thing for the bush and a fantastic reason to come along and support the festival". For further information please contact Andrew Hull on 0427 919 964 or Tonchi McIntosh on 0447 144 405.
