Seeking Comments on Indigenous Heritage Law
In August the Minister for the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts released a discussion paper for public comment on Australian laws to protect Indigenous heritage. Mr Garrett said this is an opportunity for the public to contribute ideas on making the Commonwealth’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 (ATSIHP Act) more effective as a way to protect traditional areas and objects significant to Indigenous Australians. “It’s important to make sure that any reforms to this legislation give Indigenous Australians the best opportunities to protect their traditional heritage, in balance with other social and economic considerations. This will help Indigenous Australians to maintain their traditions and cultural identity, ensuring Australia’s exceptional cultural heritage is conserved and shared for generations to come. I encourage all stakeholders to consider the discussion paper so a full range of views are available before the Government makes any decisions about changes to Indigenous heritage legislation.” More information about the consultation process and access to the discussion paper is available at www.heritage.gov.au/indigenous/lawreform. The deadline for submissions is Friday 6 November.

The theme for the 4th World Summit on Arts and Culture in September is Meeting of Cultures: Creating Meaning through the Arts. From 22-25 September arts and culture policy makers, funders and representatives of international, regional and national artists’ networks will gather in Johannesburg to discuss a range of topics. The three-day Summit includes key note addresses, panel discussions and a range of roundtable sessions which will explore current dogmas and practices in the arts and culture policy arena by testing these with a variety of international experiences. Summit Programme Director Mike van Graan said, “The UNESCO Convention on the Promotion and Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions provides a backdrop to the Summit and its deliberations. This is the first time that the World Summit is being held in a ‘developing country’ so the event will provide a platform for voices that are not often heard at mainstream international cultural events. Shoji, who creates platters and bowls for celebrated Sydney chef Tetsuya Wakuda, said his tableware pieces reflect the Japanese belief that the appearance of the dish and the presentation of the meal are of equal importance to the taste of the food. Meanwhile his stone sculptures are inspired by simple shapes, such as the circle, triangle and square that are then twisted into stunning large-scale, abstract sculptures.
