Registration open for Indigenous Art Commercial Code
Registration is now open for art dealers, including agents, galleries and arts centres to register their interest in becoming signatories to the Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct. Arts Minister, Peter Garrett, has congratulated the Code Administration Committee on their progress to date. “The Code will, for the first time, provide a national set of standards for transactions between agents, artists and dealers in the Indigenous visual arts industry. Opening a process for dealers to register their interest is an important first step in meeting the aims of the Code,” Mr Garrett said.
“The Code will ultimately help Indigenous artists negotiate fair deals for their work and give buyers greater certainty of an artwork’s origin and the way in which it was purchased." To register your interest visit the Code website at www.indigenousartcode.org

Saltwater Freshwater Festival
This year NSW's mid north coast celebrated Australia Day with a culturally appropriate bang! Held at the Coffs Harbour Botanic Gardens, the inaugural Saltwater Freshwater Festival was a resounding success. The event claimed Australia Day as a day where the whole community, both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal, came together to send a positive message to communities and government on all levels about the contribution of Aboriginal culture and endeavours to our broader Australian society. Mark Hewitt from FAHCSIA (Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs), a sponsor of the event, called the festival, "a true celebration of Reconciliation”. Alison Page, Festival Director, said the day – which attracted a crowd of over 12,000 people, around 9,000 more than expected – was a way to “acknowledge our history so that we can celebrate our future in a positive way, as Australians". For further information please visit the festival website at www.saltwaterfreshwaterfestival.org or contact Fiona Webb, Regional Aboriginal Cultural Development Officer: Tel 02 6658 1315, Email racdo@artsmidnorthcoast.org

Patchwork Tracings in Broken Hill
In mid-2009 Broken Hill's Gaara Arts Group undertook a two-day workshop with visual artist Wendy Teakel exploring the creation of artworks using found materials and dry and wet mediums. Titled 'Patchwork Tracings', the project has had some wonderful creative outcomes as well as paving the way for future community productions. Deidre Edwards, Gaara Arts Coordinator, said that workshop participants had utilised ideas and techniques developed in the workshop to produce artworks for the exhibition Parallel 1930: Broken Hill Women in the 1930s, a fascinating commentary on the lives of women at a critical point in Australian history, which continues at Broken Hill Art Gallery until 11 April. Artworks developed in the workshop also featured in the Get Off Your Arts day in September 2009 and were included in a Gaara Arts Artists Profile Book launched in March 2010. The Patchwork Tracings workshop was funded by a Country Arts Support Program (CASP) Grant from Regional Arts NSW, funded by the NSW Government through Arts NSW.

The Blake Prize
Since 1951 the Blake Society has been awarding The Blake Prize for works of art that explore the subject of religious awareness and spirituality. Unlike art prizes that are awarded for distinct subject areas such as landscape or portraiture, the Blake has always invited a much more open, personal and idiosyncratic response, so much so that it has earned the criticism, ire and sometimes applause of critics and the public alike. After all, what is religious art? The Prize is managed by the Blake Society, which is currently developing a Foundation to ensure the ongoing viability of the Prize. Its membership comes from a diverse range of professions and religious interests. The common goal of the Society is to affirm the ongoing and dynamic contribution of this cultural institution to Australian society and the arts. Armidale Culture Centre | Shield the Prize – Protect Your Vision
Until 21 May, Armidale
Shield the prize – Protect Your Vision is an accumulation of signs, symbols and images Michael Brogan has developed over the last seven years. Language in this instance evolved through creating a visual dialogue between the artwork and the viewer. More importantly the images were to evoke memories, experiences and connections we have with the landscape. Michael Brogan is a lecturer with the Oorala Centre, University of New England. He is a descendant of the Badtjala people from Fraser Island, his mother’s country. At the Armidale Cultural Centre and Keeping Place, 128 Kentucky St, Armidale. The deadline for the May 2010 e-Bulletin is 25 April 2010.
No repeats! But everything is archived online
The Regional Arts NSW e-Bulletin does not repeat listings but there are always other opportunities, grants and/or prizes still available from previous editions. Access the archive here.
Print it out!
The e-Bulletin is designed to be printed out so you can pass it on to those who don't have internet access or take it away to read elsewhere. Spread the word!
If you know anyone you think might like the e-Bulletin, feel free to pass it on but do please suggest that people subscribe directly themselves – that way we know how many people benefit from the service.
