Ngemba Wailwan Artists | Symbols of a Lost Tribe
24 August - 7 September, Sydney
An important exhibition of artwork from the Wailwan people of Warren in North Western NSW will be displayed at the Wentworth Indigenous Gallery in Sydney from 24 August until 7 September. The Ngemba Wailwan is a language group of the ancient Wailwan people, centred in the Shire of Warren along the Macquarie River. From 1860 to 1890 the Wailwan population reduced from around 30,000 to just 800, and many of their traditional mark making practices – such as carving trees with intricate totems and symbols – were lost. The exhibition Symbols of a Lost Tribe is the outcome of a process whereby the descendants of this 60,000 year old civilisation, the Ngemba Wailwan Artists, have resurrected and continued the symbolic work of their ancestors. The Ngemba Wailwan Artists would like to thank Outback Arts, Industry and Investment NSW, Arts NSW, the Australian Government's Regional Arts Fund and the Warren Macquarie Local Aboriginal Lands Council for assisting them in their endeavour. At the Wentworth Indigenous Gallery, 17 Bligh St, Sydney. For further information please contact Outback Arts: Tel 02 6822 2484

The South Project | Call for participation
The South Project is a network of arts and crafts practitioners, arts workers, writers, thinkers and others interested in culture in the southern hemisphere. In 2010, The South Project invites its network to respond to the following question: How does a network activate a public? How can individuals undertake their practice in the public sphere as part of a network, at a distance from their physical location? What aspect of your practice or what type of project is interesting to imagine producing elsewhere, remotely? How can a network facilitate culture in public, and with the public? The South Project is interested to hear your thoughts on how you do, or could imagine, working from your home to practice elsewhere as part of a global network. We invite speculation, utopian dreams and ideas that are realisable through the conduit of a network. We propose to circulate all initial responses via our website with the possibility that some of these ideas might be activated, with your involvement, within the physical public space of Melbourne in late 2010. Send your response to info@southproject.org. For further information please visit www.southproject.net/south/Melbourne_2010_Call.html

Darren Percival has achieved an outstanding reputation in Australia as an artist, musician, vocal coach and jazz singer. After an inspiring trip to New York City in 2004 to study with his mentor Bobby McFerrin, Darren returned to begin performances of his spontaneous vocal creations as Mr. Percival with the live show Out Of the Loop. Bringing these elements together, Stuart St Hill performed a lament on trumpet live at the opening and this recording now works as part of the installation.
