Beyond Empathy wins RANSW-sponsored Award for Excellence
Armidale-based community arts organisation Beyond Empathy was presented with the Arts and Health in Rural and Regional Australia Award for Excellence at an awards ceremony held recently at the 2010 International Arts and Health Conference in Melbourne. Regional Arts NSW (RANSW) sponsored the award, which recognises the important role of not-for-profit organisations such as Beyond Empathy in developing projects to improve the health and wellbeing of the population living outside major metropolitan areas. RANSW CEO, Elizabeth Rogers, commended Beyond Empathy’s work with Aboriginal communities in Moree and Bowraville in NSW, and the Kimberley in WA. “Initially using the arts as a tool to encourage young mothers to access antenatal care, Beyond Empathy’s program has developed to engage babies, children and their extended families, providing a pathway that enables access to community health and support services,” said Ms Rogers. Artist Jo Davidson is a driving force behind Beyond Empathy’s young mothers program, which began in Moree in 2004, and with her dedication and long-term funding from The Goldman Sachs & Partners Foundation, has been successfully replicated in communities across NSW and WA. Better access to film and TV programming for all Australians
In November Accessible Arts released an article on two rulings by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) which will substantially increase access to regular film and television programming for Australians who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or with low vision. In May 2010 the AHRC ruled that cinemas must meet their legislative requirements to provide access for Australians who are Deaf, hard of hearing, blind or with low vision. This was followed in October by the Commission's refusal to grant a temporary exemption from captioning of pay TV programs to ASTRA, the peak body for pay TV representing 34 broadcasters who operate 91 subscription TV channels. Sancha Donald, CEO of Accessible Arts, welcomes the AHRC rulings. "Viewing these decisions together I think we can gauge a shift in the way access to entertainment is being thought about," said Ms Donald. Accessible Arts has a variety of Disability Awareness and Access Training packages tailored to meet the needs of arts organisations, festivals and venues available online at http://www.aarts.net.au/training/

'Our World Through Children’s Eyes' is a cross-cultural art program aimed at connecting children in small rural communities in NSW and Peru. The program brings opportunity through arts and cultural exchanges to enrich children’s artistic expression, environmental awareness and appreciation for other cultures. Arts Funding in NSW
Written by Lenny Roth and Todd Buttsworth, Arts Funding in NSW is a new paper from the NSW Parliamentary Library and Research Service. Just as the arts lend constant support to community life, the debate about the appropriate level of arts funding is ongoing. While this debate may not occupy the centre stage of political life, it is nonetheless a debate that is deeply felt in many and varied parts of the community. Rather than engaging in the wider debate, this paper intends simply to provide an overview of arts funding in NSW, including trends over the years. Arts Funding in NSW is available for download from the Parliament of NSW website at http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/prod/parlment/publications.nsf/V3LIstRPSubject

Sturt Gallery | The Night Lily Head
17 December 2010 - 30 January 2011, Mittagong
The Night Lily Head is an exhibition of prints, drawings and paintings by Tony Ameneiro in which he interprets the lily motif as part flower, part human head. The exhibition brings together a recent series of drawings prints and paintings which respond to the Gymea lily (Doryanthes excelsa). Known also as the Giant, Flame or Illawarra Lily, this native flower has been a central motif in Tony’s work for the last ten years. Initially he began using the flower as a signifier or symbol of place, representing the area that his family lived in at the time, the Northern end of the Illawarra escarpment. His family has since moved from the coast to the Southern Highlands but Tony still maintains a strong connection with the Giant Lily. The Night Lily Head will be officially opened by John Monteleone, Director of Wollongong City Gallery, at 6pm on Friday 17 December and runs until 30 January 2011 at Sturt Gallery, Cnr Range Rd and Waverley Pde, Mittagong: Tel 02 4860 2080, Website www.sturt.nsw.edu.au
