The Muster is unique in that it is the only 'all Australian' country music festival in the country and has a core policy of existing for the betterment and benefit of the Bungendore community and Australian country music. 11 - 14 February, Goulburn The Australian Blues Music Festival is held in a variety of venues throughout Goulburn's historic CBD on the second weekend of February every year. The festival showcases the very best of emerging and established blues acts from around Australia and features workshops with the artists, a weekend-long open mic, Youth in Blues Jam, buskers vintage guitar and amp shop, markets, industry ‘meet and greet’ forum, the Australian Blues Music ‘Chain’ Awards and the traditional end of festival highlight – the All Star Pro Jam. A panel of representatives from the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC), Outback Arts and Orana Arts has selected five artists to exhibit in WPCC’s Regional Art Space in 2010: Rosalie Rigby of West Armidale, Tonya Graham of Millthorpe, Leah-Nicole Torbay of Armidale, Gil Pedrana of Dubbo and Katherine Sims of Stanwell Park. In December 2009 Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett announced the reappointment of Ms Kathy Keele as Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Council for the Arts for a further five years. "I am delighted Ms Keele has agreed to continue to lead the Australia Council during this critical period as we develop a national cultural policy and examine current arrangements for supporting artists and arts organisations,” Mr Garrett said. Previously the Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Business Arts Foundation (AbaF), Ms Keele brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Council, which through the Australian Government provides more than $158 million in funding for arts organisations and individual artists across Australia each year. Young people across NSW will organise and host more than 100 ‘all-ages’ music events, thanks to $107,500 in grants announced in January by Minister for the Arts, Virginia Judge. Ms Judge said the Music NSW Indent program helped people aged between 12 and 25 years organise and promote events in safe, community environments. “All-ages events provide vital opportunities for young people to be inspired by music – and they are live gig ‘apprenticeships’ for emerging bands,” Ms Judge said. This year, 43 grants worth $2,500 each will help almost 600 bands showcase their talents to approximately 40,000 young people across the State. On 23 January the 38th CMAA Country Music Awards of Australia were delivered to a capacity crowd in Australia’s Country Music Capital, Tamworth. The night belonged to Troy Cassar-Daley who walked away with a total of 6 awards for his ARIA Award winning album, I Love This Place. The impressive win brings Troy’s cumulative total of Golden Guitar trophies to 20. Tamworth born Felicity Urquhart was awarded her first solo Golden Guitar as Female Artist of the Year, while Jetty Road took out Group of the Year with Million Miles and Keith Urban picked up Top Selling Album for Defying Gravity. The inaugural Disability Art Awards and Exhibition at Eskbank House, Lithgow, were a successful addition to the region’s International Day of People with a Disability events. The awards celebrated visual artwork by people with disabilities from the Lithgow area. The works on show were vibrant, humorous and beautiful. The exhibition opened mid-December at the historic Eskbank House with artists receiving awards and guiding their guests on personal tours through the exhibition. Local musicians also provided entertainment and an afternoon singing workshop. Plans are underway to widen the awards into a regional program for International Day of People with a Disability in 2010. NAVA's Art Censorship Guide discusses the cases of Australian artists whose work has been ‘censored’ and the controversy this provokes. The guide provides advice to artists, galleries and publishers about how to anticipate and try to avoid damaging public or media reactions to artwork, and how to respond to complaints or threats. The Government's Office for Youth has published Investing in Australia’s young people: A stocktake of Australian Government initiatives for young people. This report is a detailed listing of the programs, services, payments and policies available to Australia’s 3.5 million young people aged 12–25. The four-day Dungog Film Festival in May is the biggest festival of Australian film content in the world. The fourth annual festival is now calling for submissions of feature films, documentaries, shorts, music videos, telemovies, miniseries and unproduced scripts by Australian citizens. All genres are welcome including drama, documentary, new media and animation. In addition, the festival's 'In The Raw' program is calling for submissions of unproduced feature, miniseries and TV series scripts by Australian nationals. The Brisbane Festival is calling for applications from performance artists for Under the Radar 2010. Under the Radar is a curated festival celebrating independent, experimental and new theatrical works. Performance works are sought for two main program streams: Street Feats, and In-Theatre. The In-Theatre program contains four categories: theatre, physical, sound and inter-arts. The Mick Dark Watermark Fellowship for Emerging Nature and Environmental Writers is offered biennially to an emerging writer of natural history, nature and place. The 2010 Fellowship, under the mentorship of renowned poet and publisher Ian Templeman AM, will be offered in partnership with the Varuna Writers' House. The Fellowship offers three weeks residency in the Camden Haven on the mid north coast of NSW, and three weeks writing residency at Varuna in the Blue Mountains. Antarctica's isolation and inhospitable nature are considerable barriers to all but the few who can afford the high cost of visiting as a tourist, or to those scientists and support personnel who participate in national Antarctic programs. As a way of informing and educating Australians about Antarctica and Australia's activities there, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) administers the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship enabling those with a non-science focus to experience Antarctica first-hand so that they may communicate this unique experience and understanding to other Australians. 6 - 7 February, Bungendore The Bungendore Country Muster Committee is working hard to make the 2010 Muster an unforgettable experience for everyone. This is the event's 25th anniversary year and a number of artists who performed at the first ever Muster in 1986 are returning for the celebrations, including Chad Morgan, Ted Egan, Pixie Jenkins, Terry Gordon and Owen Blundell – the last three have not missed a year yet! The Muster is unique in that it is the only 'all Australian' country music festival in the country and has a core policy of existing for the betterment and benefit of the Bungendore community and Australian country music. The festival showcases the very best of emerging and established blues acts from around Australia and features workshops with the artists, a weekend-long open mic, Youth in Blues Jam, buskers vintage guitar and amp shop, markets, industry ‘meet and greet’ forum, the Australian Blues Music ‘Chain’ Awards and the traditional end of festival highlight – the All Star Pro Jam. In December 2009 Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett announced the reappointment of Ms Kathy Keele as Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Council for the Arts for a further five years. "I am delighted Ms Keele has agreed to continue to lead the Australia Council during this critical period as we develop a national cultural policy and examine current arrangements for supporting artists and arts organisations,” Mr Garrett said. Young people across NSW will organise and host more than 100 ‘all-ages’ music events, thanks to $107,500 in grants announced in January by Minister for the Arts, Virginia Judge. Ms Judge said the Music NSW Indent program helped people aged between 12 and 25 years organise and promote events in safe, community environments. “All-ages events provide vital opportunities for young people to be inspired by music – and they are live gig ‘apprenticeships’ for emerging bands,” Ms Judge said. This year, 43 grants worth $2,500 each will help almost 600 bands showcase their talents to approximately 40,000 young people across the State. The impressive win brings Troy’s cumulative total of Golden Guitar trophies to 20. The inaugural Disability Art Awards and Exhibition at Eskbank House, Lithgow, were a successful addition to the region’s International Day of People with a Disability events. The awards celebrated visual artwork by people with disabilities from the Lithgow area. The works on show were vibrant, humorous and beautiful. The exhibition opened mid-December at the historic Eskbank House with artists receiving awards and guiding their guests on personal tours through the exhibition. Local musicians also provided entertainment and an afternoon singing workshop. Plans are underway to widen the awards into a regional program for International Day of People with a Disability in 2010. The FRRR's small grants program for small rural Australian communities will offer about $900,000 a year in grants to benefit people in rural and remote communities. Antarctica's isolation and inhospitable nature are considerable barriers to all but the few who can afford the high cost of visiting as a tourist, or to those scientists and support personnel who participate in national Antarctic programs. As a way of informing and educating Australians about Antarctica and Australia's activities there, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) administers the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship enabling those with a non-science focus to experience Antarctica first-hand so that they may communicate this unique experience and understanding to other Australians. The 2010 closing dates for the Australian Government's national touring exhibition program Visions of Australia have been announced. The Northern Rivers Portrait Prize is a painting and drawing prize open to artists whose work depicts a person from the Northern Rivers that the artist believes to be of value to the community. It is open to artists Australia wide and includes three awards: the $7,500 Northern Rivers Echo and Walters Solicitors Overall Winner (Acquisitive Award); the $1,000 Andrew and Jeni Binns Emerging Artist Award; and the $500 Lismore Regional Gallery Peoples' Choice Award. A panel of judges will select the finalist artworks and Australian artist Michael Zavros will determine the winners. Cowra Regional Art Gallery invites entries for selection into the 2010 Calleen Art Award ($12,000 acquisitive), the Central West Regional Artists Award ($2,000 non-acquisitive) and the Peoples Choice ($500 non-acquisitive). The Calleen Art Award is a nationally recognised award for an original artwork in any painting medium. Lake Light Sculpture is an exhibition and competition held on the stunning foreshore of Lake Jindabyne located at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. A challenge to poets and artists alike, Tenterfield's A Brush With Verse is a unique competition of art inspired by poetry. The Powerhouse Museum International Lace Award seeks to encourage contemporary design and challenge conventional notions of lace and its application in the areas of fashion, the built environment and digital multimedia. Professional and amateur artists, designers and practitioners around the world are invited to enter for the chance to be exhibited at the Powerhouse Museum and win a share of $40,000 prize money. The award defines lace as an openwork structure whose pattern of spaces is as important as the solid areas. Approximately 30 works will be selected for consideration for exhibition in July 2011.
