Arts and health book story callout

Regional Arts Australia Regional Arts Australia (RAA) and the National Rural Health Alliance are working together to produce a book that highlights stories about arts and health projects from regional Australia. The book will build on the success of RAA's earlier publications of arts stories, providing a permanent reminder of the powerful role of the arts in the heart of regional Australia. The arts and health book will be visually beautiful with strong lively stories, stunning images and a sound evidence-base. RAA is now calling for stories for inclusion in the book, from organisations or individuals who are working with the arts to produce positive health and wellbeing outcomes. To be eligible for consideration projects must have occurred in regional Australia or must have had regional Australians as their primary beneficiaries; been completed or be nearly complete; and happened sometime within the last three years. Story submissions open 7 July and close 4 August. Submission guidelines will be available on the RAA website from 7 July: www.regionalarts.com.au/raa1/arts-and-health--book-of-stories.asp

The National Arts and Disability Strategy survey

Arts Access Australia

In October 2009 the Cultural Ministers Council of all nine state, territory and federal arts ministers, released the National Arts and Disability Strategy. The Strategy addresses the rights of people with a disability to have access to, and full participation in, arts and cultural activities in Australia. The National Arts and Disability Strategy was developed by the Cultural Ministers Council after a national public consultation process with over 100 responses in addition to input from peak bodies including Arts Access Australia. Now that the Strategy has been created it is vital that you share your views on the most important priorities for governments to strengthen, fund and support. Arts Access Australia has created a survey for the purpose of collecting your response to priorities outlined in the document and so that you can let the government know what you want the Strategy to do for you. Read the Strategy here, and complete the survey online at www.surveymonkey.com/NADS. The survey deadline is 16 July 2010.

Cyberpaddock national touring website

Cyberpaddock

The Cyberpaddock website brings together producers and presenters to help generate performing arts seasons and tours around Australia. It has been created and is managed by the Blue Heeler Network. The site welcomes profiles for three main types of user: producers, presenters and tour coordinators. Producers are able to create profiles for their touring productions detailing the creative team, production history, technical needs and costs, together with photos, video footage and sample marketing materials. Presenters can create profiles for the venues they manage containing basic details such as venue capacity, format and technical facilities as well as photos and web links. As well as providing updates from the touring sector the site also hosts voting rounds for national and state touring mechanisms. During these rounds presenters are able to view a selection of productions available for touring and express interest via online votes. This interest is then used by tour coordinators to help develop tours. Register with Cyberpaddock at www.cyberpaddock.com.au

Report on arts and cultural infrastructure outside Sydney

Parliament of NSW

The NSW Standing Committee on Public Works have delivered their final report on The Development of Arts and Cultural Infrastructure Outside the Sydney CBD. The Committee undertook this inquiry to examine the development of an arts and cultural plan for NSW and the alignment of government planning strategies for the development of arts and cultural infrastructure outside Sydney, including regional areas. The Committee acknowledges that an appropriate arts and cultural infrastructure is imperative to maintaining a vibrant community life. The presence of community halls, centres, art spaces and studios enables talented individuals access to creating and developing important pieces of artistic work, and in turn, local communities hugely benefit from the creative initiative of their peers and neighbours. Song Cycles report

Song Cycles

Song Cycles is a joint research project of the Australia Council for the Arts and the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), which shows that attitudes, physical distance, training and education are among the significant barriers that prevent Indigenous artists from reaching wider audiences. As the first research project of its kind, Song Cycles suggests ways to combat the challenges of training, playing live, recording, airplay, distribution and touring faced by Indigenous musicians. The research suggests this could be done by creating an environment that fosters artistic development, ensures fair compensation to composers, song writers and music artists, improves access to the mainstream market and develops a touring festival network. Art Piece Gallery | Fragile

'Weep' by Louise Saxton

2 July - 3 August, Mullumbimby

Concern for the environment is central to the works displayed in the textile and fibre art exhibition, Fragile. Both in subject matter and through the use of natural and recycled materials, they bear witness to environmental degradation and pay homage to the simplicity and intrinsic beauty in the palette of the natural world – the twig, the leaf, shell and flotsam. Louise Saxton’s tree, Weep, assembled from more than 1,000 fragments of reclaimed lace (pictured) is an interpretation of the Tree of Life and a metaphor for the vulnerability of endangered species. Echoing Louise's work and concern for environmental issues, Fragile also includes Lace Tree II by Lucille Martin which responds to the global diet of over-consumption and consumerism at the expense of nature. Other contributing artists include Northern Rivers local artists Christine Willcocks, Lae Oldmeadow and Linelle Steptoe, as well as guest artists Wanda Bennett (QLD), Aly de Groot (NT). Sturt Gallery | Isolation

Pottery by John Kuczwal

Until 22 August, Mittagong

Isolation is the title of a new exhibition of lustre fired ceramics by John Kuczwal on display at Sturt Gallery until 22 August. Commonly called Arabian or Persian lustre (its origins can be traced to the Islamic world of the first millennium), reduced-pigment lustre as a medium carries no guarantee of success in its making. Despite our technical advances in kiln technology, raw material analysis and the use of microprocessors to monitor and measure, pigment-lustre continues to defy commercial production. There are good reasons as to why this is so – after the pottery has been made, glazed and fired in a conventional way, it is subjected to a third and very chancy firing that subjects the pot to great risk. John Kuczwal has travelled the world researching the craft of lustre pottery and has had many solo exhibitions. At Sturt Gallery, Cnr Range Rd and Waverley Pde, Mittagong.
