Other NewsTwenty new music tours for regional Australia
Arts Minister Peter Garrett announced in May that twenty new tours will be supported through the latest round of funding from the Contemporary Music Touring Program. “For more than ten years now, support from the Contemporary Music Touring Program has helped contemporary musicians to perform to audiences in regional and remote parts of Australia,” Mr Garrett said. "While the exposure and touring experience benefits the bands, these tours also bolster the communities they visit, including by helping to support the local economy.” The tours also bring professional development opportunities for emerging local music professionals. For example, the ‘Indent Ten Year Tour’ by MusicNSW will offer professional development workshops to emerging musicians on topics like booking bands, budgeting and legal copyright, as well as songwriting and general band craft. For further information about the Contemporary Music Touring Program visit www.arts.gov.au/arts/contemporary_music_touring_program Festivals Australia recipients announced
Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced more than $459,000 in Festivals Australia funding for 32 projects at regional and community festivals throughout Australia. “Australians living in regional and remote areas will benefit from the new and innovative arts activities offered by the festivals receiving funding,” Mr Garrett said. “A broad range of activities, including interactive art installation workshops, circus performance, dance and music workshops, Indigenous art and theatrical performances will visit destinations across Australia." Seven NSW groups received funding in this round of the Festivals Australia program: the Port Kembla Community Project for How the black swans got black feathers; Albury City Council for Spatial Stories at Write Around the Murray; Back to Bowra Festival Committee for Parade Our Pride at Back to Bowra Hinterland Festival; Ardlethan Community Progress for Youth in Dance at Ardlethan Art and Music Festival; Ukitopia Arts Collective for the opening ceremony of the Ukitopia Festival; Glen Innes Severn Council for Slippery Sirkus at the Family Fun Day; and Moorambilla Festival Incorporated for What Baggage, a festival of new Australian music. Arts Minister Peter Garrett has announced the introduction of Australia’s first ever resale royalty scheme for visual artists, commencing 9 June 2010. The Resale Royalty Right for Visual Artists Act 2009 establishes the right for visual artists to receive five per cent of the sale price when works are resold through the art market for $1,000 or more. The right applies to living artists and for a period of 70 years after an artist’s death. “The introduction of the scheme is a great result for artists and their estates – who will for the first time share in the profits made from the resale of their work,” Mr Garrett said. “Copyright Agency Limited (CAL), the Government-appointed collecting society for five years, brings two decades of experience in copyright management to setting up the resale royalty scheme. CAL has already been in contact with over 500 galleries and Indigenous art centres and is running information sessions in every state and territory to ensure that arts professionals understand their obligations under the scheme.” The Resale Royalty Act requires art market professionals to report to CAL on art sales, so that CAL can determine when a resale is payable. The Australia Council has now completed its review of the Protocols for Working with Children in Art following their introduction in January 2009. The review found that, overall, the protocols have contributed to a greater awareness and understanding of the laws and regulations relating to the protection of children when Australia Council funded artists and arts organisations are making, exhibiting and distributing art works. A number of recommendations were made to the Australia Council following its consultation with the arts sector during this review. As a result, the Australia Council has amended the protocols to increase their clarity and practicality. These amendments include changes to the protocols’ requirements for exhibitions and distribution of images of children and the role of the Classification Board.
