Australians actively participate in the arts

More than bums on seats: Australian participation in the arts

Over 16 million Australians are actively participating in the arts, according to new research released this week by the Australia Council for the Arts. The study reveals that nine out of every ten Australians aged over 15 have made the arts part of their lives in the past year with four in ten actively creating art of some form. Based on focus groups, stakeholder interviews and 3,000 Australians surveyed, this landmark research will help the arts sector understand the attitudes and values of their audiences and identify new ways to build attendance and participation. The study also revealed that Australians hold positive attitudes towards the arts, widely believing that the arts should be an important part of every Australian’s education. M&G NSW | Black is Back

Black is Back

26 March, Sydney

Across drought-stricken NSW artist collectives and cultural centre plans are blooming, yet in Sydney exhibitions of NSW Aboriginal culture often take a backseat to those from other parts of the country. How can there be greater representation of NSW Aboriginal arts, culture and history here and across the state? Is there a place for yet another cultural institution devoted to the historical artefacts and contemporary artistic interpretations of Aboriginal people of NSW? Speakers at this M&G NSW seminar will examine how the gathering of Aboriginal cultural material in one domain would be a powerful statement challenging many of the paradigms and perceptions about Aboriginal life and culture in NSW. From 2-5pm on Friday 26 March at the Museum of Sydney, Cnr Phillip and Bridge Sts, Sydney. Register online at www.mgnsw.org.au or contact Zoe Johnson: Tel 02 9339 9914

Ken Ball, 'Monet's Garden'

5 March - 26 April, Gulgong

Titled Surface Tension: an exhibition of painterly photography, Cudgegong Gallery’s new exhibition by Chris Adams and Ken Ball pushes the boundaries of what most think is possible to achieve with a camera. The process involves manipulating the photograph as it develops to achieve different and unexpected results. Meanwhile, Ball has been described as ‘Monet with a camera’ and uses a 35mm camera to create his impressionist images. At Cudgegong Gallery, 102 Herbert St, Gulgong.
