National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week

10 - 16 May, National

National Volunteer Week is the largest celebration of volunteers and volunteerism in Australia, and provides an opportunity to highlight the role of volunteers in our communities and to say thank you to the more than five million Australians who volunteer. Australian volunteers are essential to society and many charities and community services would struggle to survive without the support of their volunteers. The community arts and heritage sectors are particularly reliant on volunteers, as is community health care, environment conservation, the emergency services, education, social justice and sports. National Volunteer Week provides a platform to pay tribute to these volunteers who donate their time and energy to help others. Find out how you, your organisation and your community can join the celebration online at www.volunteeringaustralia.org

ArtStart wraps with Molong rap

The Place of Many Rocks

The final project in the Central West’s 2009 ArtStart youth arts and skills program was completed in Molong in the April 2010 school holidays. The Desert Pea Media team once again worked their magic with a group of kids from Molong, drawing out what was special about living in the town and setting it to a hip hop beat. They then produced a very slick film clip starring the participants. The clip, called The Place of Many Rocks, is a great ad for the lifestyle of Molong. Central West based media group Desert Pea Media also developed an ArtStart project in Oberon in 2009, working with year 9 students at Oberon High School and Veritas House over a school term to produce a song and video. The venue for Gloucester's best-known annual event is unchanged, with the feast and theatre performance taking place in the Recreation Centre in Gloucester Park and the fair and markets in the adjoining grounds. This year's performance is a Stooged Theatre production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Stooged Theatre principal, director and actor Carl Young has set his version of the play in 1983 (the music! the memories! the horrific fashion sense!) in what promises to be a fresh and innovative production. Lismore Regional Gallery | Double Refraction

'Double Refraction' by Ross Manning

Until 29 May, Lismore

Ross Manning is a Brisbane-based artist who works with sound and light. Often consisting of dead or obsolete technologies, materials in Manning's work are combined through a sort of DIY science that gives them a new life and function. Manning's work in the exhibition Double Refraction is made up of refracted light and features LCD screens, lenses and projectors. Manning reinvents the conventional function of his materials and in doing so brings us to question the temporary nature of technology and how it is constantly being upgraded. At Lismore Regional Gallery, 131 Molesworth St, Lismore. For further information please contact the Gallery: Tel 02 6622 2209, Website www.lismoregallery.org

Narek Galleries | More than Bowls

One of Richard Raffan's boats

Until 14 June, Tanja

For over thirty years Richard Raffan has been renowned as a turner of  simple, elegant and beautiful bowls. In this solo exhibition, in addition to the green turned enclosed forms he calls ‘pots’, he will show something totally different – a collection of whimsical boats. Raffan’s fanciful vessels are constructed with found and recycled materials as well as a few turned components. There is a patina to each boat, redolent of decades of patching and mariners 'making do'. Raffan says, "The hulls I've created most recently have become more elegant, close cousins of the dhows and Indonesian fishing boats whose gracious lines are so appealing. And I’ve enjoyed using the most unlikely bits and pieces to bring a bit of levity to these creations.” At Narek Galleries, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Rd, Tanja. For further information please contact Narek: Tel 02 6494 0112, Website www.narekgalleries.com
