A touch of rain didn’t dampen the mood of the inaugural Palette on the Pier festivities. The October 27th fundraising event to benefit Regional Arts NSW went off in style with the lit up Sydney Harbour Bridge as the spectacular evening backdrop. The evening was formally opened by the Minister for the Arts, The Hon. Virginia Judge MP, who spoke about the exciting redevelopment for Pier 2/3 and announced that a new nighttime bus service would be introduced to service arts patrons and the Walsh Bay community. The Mediterranean-style degustation menu was a huge hit, with guests devouring an Italian tasting plate from Ventuno Pizzeria, duck balls from Restaurant Arras, Firefly’s paprika calamari, and Tuscan Veal and Zucchini puffs from Ottomans and Simmer on the Bay. The dishes were beautifully matched by wines from NSW's Canowindra region. The main attraction, the regional art auction, became a bidding war with nineteen art works from all fourteen regions of NSW keenly fought over. Jazz from Sixty's Six and Fish Fry polished off the evening in a delightful fashion. The inaugural Palette on the Pier was a partnership between Walsh Bay Precinct Association and Regional Arts NSW. Regional Arts NSW sincerely thanks all the businesses, arts organisations and artists who supported the event. SEAR wins national AbaF Award

The Aboriginal Performing Arts Program (APAP) that began in Bathurst during the September school holidays aims to make theatre a more accessible experience for Aboriginal people. Working out of the Kelso Community Centre, a dozen actors, musicians and dancers, most of them Aboriginal themselves, ran a week of performance workshops for the Aboriginal community. Upwards of 60 children, teenagers and adults were involved each day. Activities for the youngest kids included circus skills, traditional dance, storytelling and music. Teenage girls and young women were taught hip hop dance whilst the young men worked with local elders and hip hop musicians from the region creating their own track, Wambool Warriors, and shooting an accompanying film clip. Adults were involved in storytelling activities led by Palawa actor and writer Tammy Anderson. Developed in consultation with the community, the Aboriginal Performing Arts Program was created by Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) and is part of their successful Local Stages program. Until 27 November, Lismore More than my Skin is a Campbelltown Arts Centre touring exhibition that brings together the work of six of Australia’s leading Aboriginal male photographers. Michael Aird, Mervyn Bishop, Gary Lee, Ricky Maynard, Peter McKenzie and Michael Riley explore through their viewpoint, what it is to be an Aboriginal male and how Aboriginal masculinity has been constructed in recent times. The exhibition originally emerged from the observation that there was a group of mid-career male photographers who were working independently of each other but who followed a similar attitude to the role of the camera and the ‘truth’ of the captured image. Their empowering photographs are often at odds with images shot by people positioned outside of Aboriginal culture.
