HighlightsSpirit of the Land Festival
8 - 10 October, Lockhart The Spirit of the Land Festival in Lockhart grew out of the worst drought in Australian history and concerns over escalating rural suicides. It took shape to encourage farmers determined to survive on the land to use country ingenuity and create sculptures using old farm machinery, recycled scrap metal and elements of the land. This 'farm art' attracted national and international media and major corporate sponsors, enabling a $10,000 first prize. The Festival has been a finalist in the NSW Inland Tourism award and Lockhart is fast becoming the farm art capital of Australia. The Spirit of the Land Festival continues to expand and now includes fine art and Indigenous art exhibitions, large-scale markets, a food and wine fest, musicians and entertainers, a rodeo and much more. Ticketing details and a full program of events are available online at www.spiritofthelandlockhart.com.au Moruya Jazz Festival
15 - 17 October, Moruya One of the most affordable festivals in Australia, the annual Moruya Jazz Festival, is a three day music spectacular which takes jazz to the pubs, clubs, streets, restaurants and parks of Moruya. Each year the charming heritage town of Moruya attracts musicians and audiences who mingle in the many venues, enjoying the eclectic mix of music, performance, and country-style hospitality. Beginning on Friday afternoon the music continues throughout the weekend until late Sunday afternoon, when as tradition dictates, bands and music fans gather in the Monarch Beer Garden for the festival finale. By popular demand the 2010 line-up is a return of great favourites, including Mike Hallam's Hot Six, Al Davey and the MonSTARS, Wizard and Oz, Waiting for Guinness and Jan Preston. For ticketing details and a full program of events visit http://moruyajazzfestival.com.au/ Red Sky Morning
Tom Holloway's award winning Red Sky Morning is a funny, warm and ultimately heartbreaking play that explores identity, dislocation and the need to connect. Three separate monologues by a father, a mother and their teenage daughter are interwoven throughout the course of one life-changing day. The play continues Holloway's trademark combination of linguistic experimentation with a robust Australian vernacular, pushing the boundaries of theatrical communication. It won the 2009 Green Room Award for Best New Australian Writing. Red Sky Morning will be performed by Red Stitch Actors Theatre at 8pm on 28 and 29 October at Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre, 105 William St, Bathurst. Tickets are $30-$42 and are available online from http://www.bmec.com.au/bmec/ The Audreys
29 October, Bangalow The Audreys new album Sometimes the Stars features a who’s who of Australian musicians, including Tim Rogers, jazz pianist Paul Grabowsky and Michael Barker of John Butler Trio fame. The album's recording process was interspersed with a backpacking jaunt through India, a tequila-soaked trip to Los Angeles, and a determined focus to get back to what started the whole shebang in the mid 2000’s – the songs of Taasha Coates and Tristan Goodall. The Audreys will play the Bangalow A&I Hall on 29 October supported by singer-songwriter Nicolas Roy. Nicolas burst onto the indie pop radar in 2010 with the track It’s All My Fault and will be releasing his debut album to coincide with this national tour. Tickets are $29.95 and are available from All Music & Vision (Byron, Ballina and Lismore), Barebones Bangalow and Mullum Books. Doors open 7pm for an 8pm show at the Bangalow A&I Hall, Station St, Bangalow. Regional Arts NSW NewsPalette on the Pier - An Arts Table for 1000

This includes weekly kids’ circus workshops with Russian trained circus performer Irina Mathias. Initially funded through the Country Arts Support Program, the circus troupe recently had their first public performance at the Condobolin Community Markets. When grown, the grass will be harvested by the West Women Weaving group to make baskets and woven fibre artworks. New sculptures for Yeoval
This year's highly successful Yeoval Mulga Bill Festival saw two new sculptures completed over the festival weekend for inclusion in the Yeoval Sculpture Park. In keeping with the festival theme 'with a billycan', well known Bathurst sculptor Colin Fenn carved a beautiful billycan atop an open campfire from a sandstone bock from the Winmalee Quarry. Mr Fenn delivered the work of art to the festival grounds on the first morning and completed the work on site. The other sculpture completed on the festival weekend was a black painted ute, stripped of all unnecessary weight, and used as a canvas by world renowned Aboriginal artist Lewis Burns. Mr Burns delighted the crowds as he recreated a whole host of Aboriginal designs and motifs in brilliant colours across the body of the vehicle. Both sculptures will now be mounted in the sculpture section of the Yeoval Banjo Paterson Bush Park, joining eight other impressive sculptures which are fast becoming a must-see for the region's tourists and travellers. 1 October - 15 November, Tanja Janet DeBoos is one of Australia’s best loved and respected ceramists. In her new exhibition Scratching the Surface at Narek Galleries, DeBoos investigates the 'oddness' of Australian flora, juxtaposing it with Chinese floral patterning and imagery to talk about our nation's borrowed creative histories. She uses the universally common technique of sgraffito, sometimes scratching into terra sigillata, other times into a black underglaze. Alternative techniques used are china painting graphics and decals over unglazed or clear glazed forms. Scratching the Surface is on display until 15 November at the old Tanja Church, 1140 Tathra-Bermagui Rd, Tanja.
