Sacred Footsteps From the Roof of the World - Mandala Tour

"Sacred Footsteps From the Roof of the World" exhibition

10 August - 14 August 2011

The Sacred Footsteps tour consists of 3 Tibetan monks and 2 assistants travelling throughout Australia bringing the Australian public  a range of extraordinary experiences such as Tibetan ritual art forms, Buddhist practices and Tibetan culture. During their time in Cowra the monks will create a unique sand mandala, using traditional patterns. This is a rare opportunity to meet artists from another cultural background. A wall in the Gallery will be used to facilitate the hanging of thangkas behind a Tibetan shrine. There will also be Tibetan handcrafts for sale. During the creation of the sand mandala there will be opportunities for interaction and discussion about Buddhist practices and Tibetan culture. Bald Archy at Grenfell

"Bad Ass-ange", Xavier Ghazi

8 August - 27 August 2011

The Bald Archy is Australia's most popular comic portrait exhibition ‐ a spoof of the Archibald Prize and the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur‐crested cockatoo named Maude. It provides artists of all styles and standards with a genuine opportunity, ranging from the hilarious to the bizarrely vulgar, to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature. Although created as something of a joke, the Bald Archy Prize has become an icon on the Australian art calendar (albeit an eccentric one), particularly because of the absurdist nature of the event, calling for irreverent comic and satirical images of well‐known Australians. The Bald Archy will be exhibited this August following a successful application by Grenfell Regional Gallery to have the exhibition tour through Grenfell. Entry to the exhibition is $5. For more information call (02) 6343 1313 or(02) 6347 8147.

The New Arcadia at Lismore Regional Gallery

"The New Arcadia"

Until 3 September 2011

This exhibition brings together artists responding to arcadian notions of the landscape. It throws light on an idealised depiction of the landscape, but with visible disruption, as the artists locate where arcadia is now. The exhibition curator, Kezia Geddes, has sourced the works in this exhibition from public and private galleries across Australia and has got together a truly exciting group of artists who bring their differing responses to notions of arcadia and the picturesque. The exhibition features work from Danie Mellor, Grant Stevens and Jan Davis among others. "The New Arcadia" will be at Lismore Regional Gallery until 3 September 2011. For more information, call (02) 6622 2209 or visit www.lismoregallery.org.

Rural Aboriginal Artists to Exhibit at Gosford Regional Gallery

Frank Wright, Outback Arts Regional Indigenous Cultural Development Officer Susan Lawrance

5 - 15 August 2011

Artwork by Aboriginal artists from around the western NSW shire of Walgett will soon be on display at Gosford Regional Gallery in The Studio Gallery, from 5th to the 15th August 2011. The artwork will feature both contemporary and traditional art styles of artists primarily from the indigenous tribes of the Gamilaroi and Yuwaalaraay people but also featuring styles of neighbouring tribes. Project Reports

Marramarra: Make, Create, Do

Young dancers from Cowra and Condobolin, image by Peter Gumpert

The Aboriginal arts showcase Marramarra: Make, Create, Do attracted around 500 people to Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre on Tuesday July 12. The Arts OutWest project brought together Aboriginal artists and communities from across the Central West of NSW. The exhibition and performance elements were blended together in a theatrical experience for the audience through poetry, dance, music, film and an exhibition. The exhibition included paintings, print making, textiles, works in encaustic wax, traditional Wiradjuri basket weaving, ceramics and wood carvings. Artistic Directors, Desert Pea Media, also filmed interviews with Aboriginal Elders and artists across the region that were shown as part of the performance. Those interviewed reflected on culture, on being an artist and on how to best help their communities grow and strengthen. The filmed snapshots painted a picture of the unique Central West NSW Aboriginal cultural identity. The event was officially opened by Wiradjuri woman and well known Australian author Dr Anita Heiss. From March to June workshops were held in Bathurst, Condobolin, Cowra, Dubbo, Lake Cargelligo, Parkes, Orange and Wellington in contemporary aboriginal dance, film and hip hop music making and professional development for visual artists. Around 150 people of all ages took part in these workshops with many of these involved in the Marramarra event in Bathurst. The project was supported by the NSW Government through Arts NSW and by the Australian Government through the Department of Family and Community Services and Indigenous Affairs with support also from the NSW Department of Transport and Bathurst Regional Council. The Central West Aboriginal Arts Development Program is supported by the Australian Government through the NACIS (National Arts and Crafts Industry Support) and ICS (Indigenous Cultural Support) programs.

During the residency, artists are provided with professional development opportunities to work with Waverley Council community and cultural services. In lieu of rent, the lease is “paid” in-kind by resident artists with the delivery of an arts project involving members of the community. The resident artists are also expected to grant studio access to visitors. Artist-led projects need to involve the active participation of Waverley residents.

Steady Eddie and the Local Jokers

Steady Eddy and the Local Jokers

26 August 2011

The Bathurst Theatre Company has created an opportunity for aspiring local comedians, as well as a great night of entertainment for the people of the Central West. They are asking locals to get up and try their hand at stand up comedy with comedian Steady Eddy. The Bathurst Theatre Company has a tradition of encouraging members to try their hand at any form of theatre that appeals to them, and comedy is something a lot of people would like to try. They are asking each person to perform for three to five minutes, and once the troupe of Local Jokers is complete there will be regular get togethers where they can try out new material on each other, learn new skills and have some fun. The Theatre Company will also need assistance with staging the event, and are also looking for helpers to that end. If you would like to find out more about the event (no obligation to perform), ring Tandi Pickard from the Bathurst Theatre Company on (02) 6331 0738 or 0403 068 461.
