Opera at the Dish

The Dish provided a wonderful backdrop on the night.

The staging of 'Opera at The Dish' in October is being hailed as one of Parkes Shire’s greatest ever triumphs with Governor-General Quentin Bryce describing the concert as truly memorable. More than 2000 people attended the once-in-a-lifetime concert at the CSIRO telescope outside of Parkes. They rose to their feet at its conclusion to reward the performers – Helen Barnett, Raymond Khong, Julie O’Connor, Dallas Watts, conductor Mark Shiell and the Macquarie Philharmonia Orchestra in a standing ovation. Parkes under The Stars committee president Malcolm Stacey said the concert had exceeded all expectations both in the size of the crowd and in the `magic’ of the entertainment against the backdrop of The Dish. All proceeds will be paid to the McGrath Foundation to provide more breast care nurses in communities right across Australia. Read the full story here.

Arts Northern Rivers: Spotlight on CASP

Digby Moran with staff and students from Coraki High School

Earlier this year, 10 Northern Rivers projects were selected for 2011 CASP (Country Art Support Program) funding. While some of these are yet to be completed, four communities have enjoyed successful events. The Coraki Art Prize successfully gained funding for $1000 towards printing and painting workshops targeting young indigenous artists. The Painting workshop was held during June and welcomed 17 teenagers, four members of the Coraki Art Prize committee, the current and previous Coraki Primary School Aboriginal Education Officers and artist Digby Moran, who all spent what was unanimously agreed to be a wonderful and productive day. Thanks to CASP the teenagers were treated to a day (cost free) where they were able to learn from a master and produce an impressive bosy of work.
