Flickerfest comes to Dungog

The best of Flickerfest 2011 (the 29th International Short Film Festival held in Bondi in January 2011) is touring the nation and the Hunter region is lucky to have a day-long feast of the best of Flickerfest heading its way on Saturday 12 February. Four great sessions of short films will be presented over one day, including two unique sets of international short films, another of shorts with a comedy twist and, of course, the best of the Australian shorts from the 2011 Flickerfest. John O’Brien, a local resident and screen writer who is involved in the Flickerfest selection process, will introduce each session to the audience on the day. Screenings take place at the historic Dungog Cinema, with all profits from the event going back to the cinema either as improved cinema facilities, more films or to improve the historic hall. Sleepwalking: a multimedia experience

Greig Traynor and Open Studio present Sleepwalking: a multimedia experience – an evening of nocturnal images, ambient live music and fine food. While Coffs Harbour sleeps, photographer Greig Traynor has been making treks into the urban and natural landscapes of Coffs harbour and returning with hauntingly beautiful images devoid of the distractions of daylight. These unique images will transport you to places that you may have been, but never seen. Musicians Khristian Benton, Billy James, Solomon Chowdhury, Rupert Craigan, Gian Peck, and Jack T will perform original ambient music that will enhance the experience, with catering supplied by Mumtaj Indian Restaurant. Scott Howie joins Eastern Riverina Arts Program
Eastern Riverina Arts Program (ERAP) is delighted to welcome Scott Howie as the new Regional Arts Development Officer. Scott has been contributing to the cultural landscape in the Riverina for over twelve years as a practicing artist, educator and arts administrator. After completing a teaching degree from the University of Canberra, Scott spent a number of years teaching high school drama and media before moving to Wagga in 1999. Since then he has been the founder and Artistic Director of Jibshot Productions, Artist-in Residence at the Riverina Theatre Company, Artistic Coordinator of Riverina Young People’s Theatre, Manager of Griffith Regional Theatre, Manager of the Local Stages partnership, and a lecturer in Design for Theatre and Television at Charles Sturt University. Scott maintains his own artistic practice as a theatre and performance maker as well as composing and recording sound works for artist installations and theatre performances. Murray Arts welcomes Vanessa Keenan
Murray Arts has welcomed Vanessa Keenan to the role of General Manager/Regional Arts Development Officer while Karen Gardner is on extended Maternity Leave. Vanessa has spent eight years in local government in a broad range of roles including Museums, Cultural Development and Project Management. Much of her experience has focused on community engagement and establishing policy and frameworks to deliver tangible outcomes for the community through the arts. Most recently Vanessa has completed a contract role with AlburyCity as Cultural Development Coordinator, where she implemented a number of ephemeral public art projects and developed Council's ten year Urban and Public Art Strategy. Prior to this, Vanessa was Project Manager for Riverside Wagga Wagga. Beyond Empathy moves audiences at the Walsh Bay Open Day
Presented by Regional Arts NSW, Beyond Empathy's performance of here I am at the Walsh Bay Open Day in Sydney on 5th December was a moving experience. After only five short days of rehearsals with professional dance and performance mentors, the young performers, who were working together for the first time, captivated the audience with a powerful, highly dynamic and engaging professional performance. Concentration was high with the young people’s commitment to each other and their mentors evident as they carried each other through the 23 minute performance. Young children in the audience were initially scared by the force of the performance, moving back from the front row to the safety of their mothers’ laps. As the show progressed, they inched their way back to the front row, drawn in by the power and magnetism of the dancers and their story. Beyond Empathy uses arts genres such as film, digital and mixed media, theatre, music, dance and visual arts to build relationships between intergenerationally disadvantaged young people, local support agency staff and local communities. Saltwater Freshwater Festival makes waves
The Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance has staged another outstanding event on Australia Day, showcasing some of the best Aboriginal talent in the country for the second year running. The accolades keep coming for the Festival, with the inaugural event winning the Community Event of the Year award at this year's Coffs Harbour Australia Day Awards, while an estimated 10,000 people poured into Port Macquarie’s Westport Park for the 2011 Festival. Festival director Alison Page said the 2011 event showed the Festival was just as successful in Birpai country as it was in Gumbaynggir country. “The difference this year from last was we actually catered for 10,000 people with the infrastructure and the number of ambassadors and volunteers – we had 80 volunteers, some of whom caught buses from Coffs Harbour and some came from the local community," she said. Among the volunteers were Regional Arts NSW's Funding Manager, Annette Eassie, and her husband David, who travelled from Sydney to take part in the event. Festival highlights included cultural and artistic demonstrations, the Black Fella Whitefella panel discussion on reconciliation, and the launch of Saltwater Freshwater Art, a stunning new publication presenting a snapshot of 39 practicing Aboriginal visual artists from the Mid North Coast of NSW. Orana region museums set the standard
In December ten museums from the Orana region were recognised at a celebration event held at the Western Plains Cultural Centre, Dubbo, for their successful participation in Museums & Galleries NSW's 2010 Standards Program: for sustainable community museums. The Program targets a different region each year, challenging local museums to undertake a year long process of self-review and activities designed to assess their practices and policies against national standards developed for public museums. The ten museums from the Orana region that completed the Program are a diverse group and include the Brewarrina Aboriginal Cultural Museum, the Narromine Aviation Museum and the Old Dubbo Gaol. ArtStart Coordinating Organisations for 2011
TAFE NSW Social Inclusion and Vocational Skills Unit (SI&VA) is pleased to announce the successful organisations for the coordination of ArtStart NSW 2011. The coordinating organisations from across metropolitan, regional and remote NSW will receive grants to assist them and their partners to conduct a range of creative projects. The projects will support arts and cultural skill development for young people aged 12 to 24 years of age. Notably, seven of the fifteen selected organisations are Regional Arts Boards belonging to the Regional Arts NSW Network: Arts Mid North Coast, Arts North West, Arts OutWest, Arts Upper Hunter, Outback Arts, South West Arts and Southern Tablelands Arts. A further six Regional Arts Boards are involved as partner organisations: Arts Northern Rivers, Orana Arts, West Darling Arts, Eastern Riverina Arts Program, Western Riverina Arts and South East Arts Region. New research shows value of public galleries in regional NSW
On 28 January the results of Museums & Galleries NSW’s statewide audience development study, Guess Who’s Going to the Gallery?, were launched by the Hon. Virginia Judge, NSW Minister for the Arts. The major three-year research project found that age, income, level of education, employment status and cultural background were no barrier to attending and enjoying galleries. Notably, the study showed that 72 per cent of regional gallery patrons lived in the local government area of the gallery they visited, compared with 58 per cent in the Sydney metropolitan area. "It shows that people out in rural and regional NSW really value their public galleries, and it's a very important part of their community," Ms Judge said. Of regional respondents, 50 per cent cited mental stimulation as the reason they visited galleries. Michael Rolfe, CEO of Museums and Galleries NSW, believes this is an exciting statistic. "I think it emphasises the importance of the programs that galleries run. They really are constantly wanting to, and indeed needing to and succeeding in providing content that is stimulating and exciting and fulfilling." The landmark study also showed that four out of ten gallery attendees come from households earning less that $40,000, that women represent 69 per cent of gallery audiences, and that 13 per cent of audiences speak a language other than English at home. Fourth arts and cultural accord launched
In late November Arts Minister Virginia Judge signed a three-year accord with the Local Government and Shires Associations to ensure continued growth of the arts and cultural sector across the State. “The Government has pledged $330,000 for a Fourth Cultural Accord to deliver outcomes from Arts NSW and the Associations,” Ms Judge said. “Since 1997 the NSW Government and Associations have developed and implemented three accords to facilitate arts and cultural growth. “This recognises that both tiers of government are committed to increasing access and participation in the arts and cultural activity. Arts NSW and representatives from the Associations will develop a plan for use of the NSW Government funding on projects and programs to deliver the objectives of the accord. In particular, there is an emphasis on involvement by those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal people, young people, regional communities and people with a disability." Community artists win top honours
In December the Australia Council for the Arts celebrated the achievements of three outstanding community artists with the announcement of the 2010 Australia Council Community Arts and Cultural Development Awards. Western Sydney artist, Alissar Chidiac, received the prestigious Ros Bower Award worth $50,000 for an outstanding, life-long contribution to community arts and cultural development. Two young artists also jointly received the Kirk Robson Award for their achievements working with communities to produce art about social issues. Poppy van Oorde-Grainger has completed over 30 artist residencies across Western Australia and worked with marginalised young people in the UK, producing film, installations, performance and more. Fellow Kirk Robson Award recipient, Yanni Scott Davis, has worked with young people in detention centres as well as Indigenous youth and Muslim youth, mentoring and delivering programs in digital media, music, circus, theatre, hiphop and graffiti art. New peak body: Writing Australia
Five state-funded writers’ centres from around the country will combine forces to form a new national organisation called Writing Australia, in a new Literature Board initiative announced in January by the Australia Council for the Arts. Writing Australia, to be based in Canberra, will bring together the Tasmanian, NSW, Victorian, South Australian and the ACT Writers centres to deliver services and programs for writers on a national level, while writers’ centres from the remaining states will be become associate members. The new body will provide an additional layer of professional skills development and promotion for Australian writers, including a national program of residencies, opportunities for mid-career writers to promote their work outside their home states, a national conference and links to similar overseas service organisations. Minister announces Australian Heritage Week
In December Federal Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, the Hon Tony Burke MP, announced a new national celebration: Australian Heritage Week.
Heritage is about the places and stories that make Australia special. It includes our natural places, our Indigenous heritage and the diverse historic sites that together reflect our development as a nation. Our heritage contributes to our sense of place and to our community and personal wellbeing, informs us about where we have come from and who we are, and is fundamental to our national identity. Australian Heritage Week will run from Thursday 14 April until Wednesday 20 April 2011. This week is an opportunity for all Australians to join together to celebrate our shared and special heritage. Dungog Film Festival partners with Sydney Theatre Company
The Dungog Film Festival (DFF) has announced a new partnership with Sydney Theatre Company (STC).
DFF and STC will present In The Raw, a dynamic live script reading program where actors read new, unproduced screenplays to a live audience, in the Richard Wherrett Studio in Walsh Bay. In The Raw was launched at DFF in 2008 to support talented screenwriters and help their projects into production. Due to high demand, In The Raw is launching on Monday 7 February as a regular bi-monthly event. The reading begins at 6pm and on completion, the audience will be invited to enter a dialogue with the filmmakers. In the tradition of BAFTA and The Script Factory in the UK, In The Raw will be Sydney’s very own quality event showcasing exceptional writing (and acting) talent in Australia. CarriageWorks welcomes Lisa Havilah as CEO
CarriageWorks – described as the home for contemporary arts and culture in Sydney – has announced the appointment of Lisa Havilah as its new CEO. Currently the Director of Campbelltown Arts Centre, Havilah has pioneered the development of an innovative multidisciplinary contemporary arts program that has engaged the diverse communities of Western Sydney. The Sydney Magazine named Lisa as one of the top 100 influential people of Sydney, describing her development of Campbelltown Arts Centre as reflecting "just the right mix of creative thinking and innovative zeal". Ms Havilah says, "I am proud of what we have achieved and the people I have worked with at Campbelltown Arts Centre, and excited to join CarriageWorks at such an important time in the organisation’s development. I look forward to building on the many achievements that CarriageWorks has already delivered." She will commence her new role at CarriageWorks in February. Kids Adventure Passport encourages cultural visits
This summer holidays NSW school children in years K-6 are encouraged to pick up their Kids’ Adventure Passport and undertake the Premier's Adventure Challenge. In its second year, the Kids’ Adventure Passport gives primary school children free entry to 71 cultural venues across NSW. This is a fun and free activity for parents and carers looking to the keep kids entertained during the summer school holidays and on weekends. In the Riverina region, for example, kids can freely visit the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, the Tumbarumba Library, Griffith Regional Gallery and four cultural venues at Hay including the Bishops Lodge, Shear Outback, Dunera Museum and the Hay Gaol Museum. Kids who collect at least three stamps in the Passport will receive a certificate signed by the NSW Premier. All children who take part have the chance to win prizes including a book pack worth $300. Art and health partnership presents exhibition in Bathurst
OUT of the Ordinary, an exhibition of works from the Bathurst region, continues until March 2011, after a well-attended launch as part of International Day of People with disability. The exhibition includes digital images, paintings, drawings and lino prints compiled by a group of outsider artists from the Bathurst region. Exhibition curator Cate McCarthy said outsider art was first recognised as an art form early last century and refers to artists who are self-taught or raw in style. “Outsider artists usually have limited contact with mainstream art or creative institutions, which makes their artworks particularly insightful and unique,” said Ms McCarthy. The OUT of the Ordinary exhibition allows local artists, many of whom are closely associated with the Health Service, to showcase their work in public. “It’s all part of the ongoing Art and Health Program, which is built on a partnership between Arts OutWest and the Bathurst Health Service,” said Ms McCarthy. The exhibition was launched in conjunction with the International Day of People with disability to encourage members of the community to recognise new talent. Works will be on display in the foyer of Bathurst Base Hospital, Howick St, Bathurst until the end of March 2011.

Developed by Regional Arts Australia, the course SmArt In Business: Business Skills for Creative People(national code 40594SA) is now ready for delivery. Previously known as Creative Volunteering, the course has been redeveloped with a new business model so that Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) may deliver the course under a licensing agreement. The license grants the licensee unlimited number of deliveries to an unlimited number of participants. New compliance resource for Artist Run Initiatives
In 2010 M&G NSW, with support from The City Of Sydney, ran a weekend seminar on Compliance for Artist Run Initiatives (ARIs). Whilst compliance can be costly and seem like a long and arduous process, not being compliant is a greater risk to your activities, you personally and your practice. If anything does go wrong, the legal ramifications and penalties can be crippling.
In an effort to guide ARIs through the often complex process of navigating compliance, M&G NSW with the assistance of City of Sydney and NAVA, has developed an electronic booklet to assist you in the process of setting up and managing an ARI, whether it is a pop up event, DIY, emerging or established space. It provides the tools for navigating the processes of compliance. However, it is not a legal document and is for the purposes of advice only. A data picture of Australia's arts and entertainment sector 2010
Australia's arts and entertainment sector underpins cultural and social innovation, improves the quality of community life, is essential to maintaining our cities as world class attractors of talent and investment, and helps create ‘Brand Australia’ in the global marketplace of ideas. The sector makes a significant contribution to the Australian economy. So what is the size and nature of this contribution? The Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology recently conducted an exercise to source and present statistics in order to produce a data picture of Australia’s Arts and Entertainment Sector. The exercise involved gathering the latest statistics on broadcasting, new media, performing arts, and music composition, distribution and publishing as well as Australia’s performance in world markets. Acceptance Performance Workshop Series

Acceptance is an innovative series of performance workshops for young people, with and without mild intellectual disability, who are interested in learning new skills, building confidence and making new friends through performance. Led by award-winning Australian actor Tracie Sammut (GP, House Gang, Home & Away) these high energy workshops will explore everything from unique dance styles (including modern ballet) to theatre sports, contact improvisation, storytelling and voice work. Semester One, which starts in February and runs every Saturday through to July, will also feature guest tutors drawn from Tracie's many professional contacts in the industry. Acceptance participants will have the chance to devise their own ensemble piece for an end of semester performance. The workshop series costs $240. The Toyota Community Spirit Gallery is calling for submissions from emerging artists to exhibit in its Emerging Artist exhibition in March 2011. Crime Week at Varuna | Call for applications
Spend a week in residence with acclaimed crime writer Marele Day. Marele will be in residence for two separate weeks with eight selected writers (four writers from 29 August – 4 September and four writers from 17-23 October), providing individual consultations and group sessions to participants in developing their manuscript to the next stage. ArtStart 2011 | Call for artwork design
ArtStart NSW is an arts and cultural program designed for young people aged 12 to 24 in NSW. The program provides opportunities to learn new skills through participating in arts, music and performance workshops and projects. Bus Shelter Poetry | Call for submissions
Do you want to see your written work out there on the streets of Wagga? Wagga City Council and the Booranga Writers' Centre are now opening submissions for a new public poetry project. Poems are sought for display at selected bus shelters in the Wagga area – poems that are about, or in some way inspired by, the city of Wagga Wagga. Your poetry might include the city, the landscapes, the people – whatever Wagga means to you. Selected poems will be displayed in a large poster style format. Selection of poems will be a competitive process and payment of $200 will be offered to each successful poet. Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships
The Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarships provide support for young Australians in a variety of categories to help them further their cultural education and achieve their dreams. They are awarded each year for study, maintenance and travel either in Australia or overseas. A total of six scholarships each to the value of $20,000 will be offered in 2011. The categories for the 2011 scholarships include acting, painting, sculpture and singing. There are three acting scholarships on offer this year. The ArtStart program has been created to give financial assistance of up to $10,000 to arts graduates, helping them move from study to a professional career in the arts industry. Grants are available for artists in the visual arts, hybrid and media arts, performing arts, music, literature or in community arts and cultural development. Artstart can fund a career or small business development strategy that might include creating a portfolio of work, marketing yourself, setting up studio space, paying for business advice, disability or cultural awareness training, tools of trade, mentorship and more. There’s no age limit, however applicants need to have completed (or be about to complete) eligible arts training at Certificate IV level or above in the three years prior to the ArtStart application closing date. This category provides funding of up to $20,000 for individuals, groups and organisations to develop and implement community arts and cultural development projects with a range of partners. The community partnerships committee supports a number of priority areas that cover a range of geographic, demographic and social contexts. These priority areas serve to focus effective use of the resources of community partnerships and include regional Australia, disability, young people, cultural diversity, emerging communities, Indigenous people, remote Indigenous communities and specific critical social and cultural issues requiring focused attention. For the purpose of this category, the term ‘partners’ refers to individuals or organisations that will help make the project happen. The partners will work in collaboration with the applicant, towards a shared vision and may contribute financially or in kind to the project. First time applicants are encouraged to apply.

Australia Council for the Arts | AlloSphere Residency
The Australia Council for the Arts invites Australian musicians, composers, sound artists and media artists who work extensively with sound to apply for the pilot 3-month AlloSphere Residency. The Inter-Arts office and the Music Board, in partnership with the University of California, are offering an opportunity for an artists' residency at this unique international facility. The AlloSphere is a 30-foot diameter sphere built inside a 3-story, near-to-anechoic (echo free) cube in Santa Barbara, California, which allows for synthesis, manipulation, exploration and analysis of large-scale data sets in an environment that can simulate virtually real sensorial perception. The AlloSphere is an instrument similar to the telescope, in that it will enable scientists to see data in new ways that provoke insight. It is also like a violin or a symphony orchestra – an instrument to compose for and to play. Australian Antarctic Division | Arts Fellowship
As a way of informing and educating Australians about Antarctica and Australia's activities there, the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) administers the Australian Antarctic Arts Fellowship enabling those with a non-science focus to experience Antarctica first-hand so that they may communicate this unique experience and understanding to other Australians. Head On Portrait Prize for Photography
Head on Portrait Prize, Australia's most prestigious photographic portrait competition, will be open for entries from 1 February until 13 March 2011. Australian photographers at home and around the world are invited to submit images for the 2011 competition, widely regarded as the leading photographic portrait prize in the country. Northern Rivers Portrait Prize
Now in its second year, the Northern Rivers Portrait Prize is a painting and drawing prize open to artists whose artwork depicts a person from the Northern Rivers who the artist believes to be of value to their lives and/or to the community. Prometheus Visual Arts Award
The Prometheus Visual Arts Award was dreamed into existence in 2003 through an awareness of the importance of developing artistic confidence, expertise and appreciation amongst our nation's artists and our nation's children. It has been designed to inspire emerging artists to see, reflect upon and interpret our world in fresh, idiosyncratic and challenging ways. The Competition is open to all Australian artists (an Australian citizen or those who have been a permanent resident of Australia for at least twelve months), and welcomes the submission of works from all forms of art media. Mr Badger, in the guise of storyteller, presents a delightful performance of Kenneth Grahame's classic story The Wind in the Willows. Mr Badger, in his own kindly way, tells the story of Toad, Ratty and Mole and their adventures on the Riverbank, the Open Road, the Wild Wood and Toad Hall. A storytelling performance celebrating the joys of friendship and the natural world, this intimate performance tours to libraries, schools, festivals, agricultural shows and public gardens. The performance delights both youngsters and devotees of Grahame's book. It is suitable for children aged five and over and is 35 minutes in duration. Lismore Regional Gallery | BoxWorld

BoxWorld is a spectacular miniature city made almost entirely from recycled materials. It was created by Tasmanian model maker and environmentalist, Warren Thomas, and has been over twelve years in the making. Warren was originally inspired to create BoxWorld after a visit to a travelling display by Lego Land. Unable to afford or justify the use of plastic Lego blocks, Warren started using milk cartons and cereal boxes for his display instead. Warren is a firm believer in the three Rs: Reduce, Re-Use and Recycle. BoxWorld is the antithesis of glistening commercialism, which lures us to spend money beyond our means. It transforms everyday waste into something intriguing and is made of materials which are mostly free, including cardboard, polystyrene, cans, straws and ice cream sticks. The National Contemporary Jewellery Award 2010 exhibition features work by 33 contemporary Australian jewellery designers, bringing together contemporary applied arts, visual arts and design practice in one innovative exhibition. An exciting new collaboration between Sturt Gallery and Griffith Regional Art Gallery sees this important jewellery exhibition on tour for the very first time and Sturt is the exclusive venue to host it. Andrew Veivers | The Rhythm Method

Andrew Veivers, one of Australia’s finest Spanish guitarists, is undertaking a 3 month solo tour of concerts, workshops and masterclasses to celebrate the launch of his flamenco guitar instructional book and DVD, The Rhythm Method. Andrew’s performances will cover South East Queensland and coastal and central NSW, including Illawarra, Tamborine, Tyalgum, Bellingen, Newcastle, Sydney, Bathurst, Griffith, Hay, Deniliquin, Darlington Point and Warwick. Stuart Boggs: To Cut Away the Surface Stuart Boggs is a gestural expressionist painter and geologist whose bold works portray the erosional balance and imbalance of the landscape. Boggs lives and works in the New England gorge country.
Robyn Jackson and Julia Hardman: Mixed Mediums Robyn Jackson is inspired by the stories and characters from every day living in a country town. She has created a series of fun, colourful artworks imbued with a little mischief. Julia Hardman's recent work has been inspired by a trip to Brazil and frequently depicts people in the environment. Turns
14 and 15 February, Bathurst
Two icons of Australian theatre, Nancye Hayes and Reg Livermore, take to the stage in the world premiere tour of Turns – a reflection on identity, family, show business, and completely losing your marbles! Pantomime star Marjory Joy is on her last legs (or is she?). As she reflects on a life spent in show business (or was it?), her son Alistair tries to understand this woman, all women – and to come to terms with one woman in particular. Turns was especially created for these two stars, from the pen and vivid imagination of Reg Livermore himself. Turns will be performed at 8pm on Monday 14 February, and 12pm and 8pm on Tuesday 15 February. Lior by Request is an intimate tour that presents fans with the unique opportunity to request the set list each night. Fans can not only request their favourite tracks from Lior's three studio albums, they can also request a cover song that they would like to see Lior and his string quartet interpret. The Sand Dwellers

This comedy-drama, by local playwright Kay Nankervis, is set in a fictional current affairs television program production office. The characters are forced to make questionable decisions daily in order to survive in the cut-throat world of commercial TV. The action of the play is reflected against great moments in white Australian and western history – exposing those iconic events we celebrate as examples of our heroism as ones that should help us see our cowardice. M. Ward in Byron Bay

On his seventh album, M. Ward cements his reputation as one of America’s most unique talents. Mention his name to any folk or guitar aficionado and you’ll be met with an avalanche of praise. Over the past few years, he has found an ever-increasing and dedicated audience. His last three albums – Transfiguration of Vincent, Transistor Radio, and Post-War, all released on the Merge label – have struck a singular chord among music fans. He has collaborated with some of the world’s best musicians including Cat Power, Norah Jones, Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and Neko Case. M. Pirate Trivia Fundraiser

Grafton Regional Gallery is hosting Pirate Trivia at 6pm on Friday 25 February at the Grafton District Services Club. The trivia night is a fundraiser for the Gallery’s flagship event, the Jacaranda Acquisitive Drawing Award (JADA). In addition to the trivia, prizes will be on offer for the numerous pirate-themed games (all legal) that are planned with local businesses contributing to the treasure chest. Textile artist Sharon Peoples' Red Shoes series began with a postcard design for a pair of red leather slippers on a dark background. The strong response to her postcard design encouraged Peoples to investigate the myths and imagery of red shoes as a rich symbolic source, from the tales of Hans Christian Anderson to the writings of Freud, Jung, Bettelheim and Warner. The delight of the array of reds, the shades and the hues, and the textures that could be used in a narrow context, was energizing. Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player

The Greater Lithgow Arts Council has arranged a fantastic concert at the Union Theatre as a highlight of their 'Back to the 1920's' weekend. Titled Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player, David Scheel's performance pays tribute to great pianists of the past, involves hilarious (and true) stories of bad pianos he has had to play, and sends up whoever or whatever is making the news. You might hear a popular folk tune played in the styles of various old masters, or a piece by Bach and another by Andrew Lloyd Webber played simultaneously – one with the right hand, the other with the left. A mini-sonata based on the 20 most requested tunes is another favourite, as is David’s comedy classic, a translation of the lyrics of Waltzing Matilda. Small wonder David has been compared with performers such as Peter Ustinov, Robin Williams and Victor Borge. David will perform at 2pm, Sunday 27 February at Union Theatre, Bridge St, Lithgow. Junee Rhythm 'N' Rail Festival

After a couple of years ‘on the shelf’ Junee's Rhythm 'N' Rail Festival is being relaunched in celebration of Junee's distinctive rail heritage. The Festival's feature event will be the Wind in the Roundhouse Concert which will showcase a variety of unique acts, including the interactive African drumming group Teambeat. There are plenty of other drawcards across the weekend, including Tin Hare train shuttles, Licorice Saturday at Junee Licorice & Chocolate factory, a Farmers Market, Junee Lamb lunch, Bush poets breakfast, Rocky Road world record attempt, Living Museum and plenty more.

Sculpture on the Edge
4 - 13 March, Bermagui
The outdoor sculpture exhibition Sculpture on the Edge will run from 4-13 March at various locations around Bermagui, including Endeavour Point Headland, Horseshoe Bay Beach, Dickinson Park and the Bermagui Community Hall. A number of events will be held in association with the exhibition, including the Monumental vs Ephemeral symposium at The White House, Bermagui on 6 March; a Festival Club at the Horse and Camel Wine Bar on 6 and 9 March; and an Open Day at patron Philip Cox's Murrah property on Saturday 12 March. This year's prize pool has grown with the donation of an Emerging Artist Prize by the Bermagui Country Club and one from young patrons Daniel and Adam Iliffe. Philip Cox will again provide the Acquisitive Prize, while Cursley Financial Services are supporting a People's Choice Award and ANU Sculpture School will donate a residency. Funding from Regional Arts NSW and Horizon Credit Union means a number of workshops will be on offer for local schools as well as an open workshops on soft sculpture and fire sculpture.
