Project Reports

Crafting the Lachlan Network

Crafting the Lachlan network

Started by Arts OutWest and Lachlan Arts Council in March 2010 as a place for arts and crafts groups of the Parkes, Forbes and Lachlan shires to meet and network, the Crafting the Lachlan network has made some very genuine connections. At the May meeting in Condobolin (the 3rd held) the group heard about plans for the Parkes Embroiderers Guild to exhibit in Forbes as guests of the Forbes Art Society. The Parkes Painters Group has already taken a show to Condobolin. These kinds of interactions across neighbouring towns are relatively new to the area and are already boosting audiences and opportunities. Groups shared news on upcoming exhibitions and workshops, shared ideas and tips for working with children and families and even brought a bit of show and tell. You can read more online at www.artsoutwest.org.au/resources/networks.php.

Federal Government's Digital Economy Strategy

Pic alt text

Minister Simon Crean has welcomed the Federal Government's new Digital Economy Strategy as a major opportunity for the arts sector and regional Australia. The Strategy maps the way forward for Australia to become a world-leading digital economy by 2020 with the roll-out of the National Broadband Network (NBN). The Strategy includes:

- The $27.2 million NBN Enabled Education and Skill Services Program to allow organisations to access grants to trial innovative on-line and interactive education and skills services.

- The $12.4 million Digital Enterprises Program to assist small-to-medium enterprises and not-for-profit organisations, including cultural institutions and arts organisations, to take advantage of the NBN rollout and improve the efficiency and reach of their operations.

- The $23.8 million Digital Communities initiative to establish a Digital Hub in each of the 40 communities to first benefit from the NBN and accelerate take-up and usage of the network.

"In the arts sector, the Strategy initiatives will help to develop online education and the promotion of digital projects. I know that the regional arts leaders who attended the Regional Arts Broadband Forum in Canberra in April are keen to embrace the benefits of the digital platform in their communities.

"For regional Australia, the programs represent an early down payment on the Government's commitment to ensuring that NBN bridges the digital divide which impacts on regional communities," Mr Crean said.

You can download a copy of the strategy from http://www.nbn.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/National_Digital_Economy_Strategy.pdf.

Julius Caesar - Bell Shakespeare

29,30 June 2011

'Julius Shakespeare'

To see the future one must only look to the past. Like many who came before him and after him, Julius Caesar had the support of the people but the loathing of the players. They conspired. The persuaded. They whispered it was for the good of the country. Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare's new Associate Artistic Director, takes this momentous piece of Roman history and transports it to the corridors of backroom politics. This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from office. There will be three shows over June 29 & 30 at the Orange Civic Club. To book tickets, call Ticketek (02) 6393 8111.
