SEAR's Bega Art Prize won by Bernard O’Grady
The Bega Art Prize People's Choice Award has been won by Wallagoot artist Bernard O’Grady for his oil painting When I was the sky itself. This proved to be a happy double for Bernard who also took out the Mailroom Prize in the week leading up to the opening of the exhibition. Bega Valley Regional Gallery curator, Megan Bottari, said his vertiginous reflection of the forest and sky proved to be very popular with gallery visitors over the six weeks of the show. "It was a terrific painting," she said, "and it just goes to show how marvellously discerning the Council mailroom staff are!" Andrew Gray, the Regional Arts Development Officer for the South East Arts Region (SEAR), which sponsored the prize, was on hand to congratulate the artist and hand over the cheque. Visual Arts Speed Dating-4-Artists event
On 14 February—Valentine's Day, fittingly—the Visual Arts Speed Dating-4-Artists event set up 24 artists from the Central West and Orana regions with a series of five-minute ‘dates’ with representatives from metropolitan and regional galleries. Artists at the event travelled from Bathurst, Canowindra, Geurie, Gilgandra, Mudgee, Dunedoo, Yetholme, Cumnock, Hill End, Blayney, Peel, Millthorpe and Dubbo to attend. Arts OutWest RADO Tracey Callinan said while not all of the artists will be selected to exhibit at an art gallery, all participants would benefit. “It’s a chance for them to present themselves as an artist,” she said. “It’s also very good for their professional development and helps them learn what the galleries want and develop links with those galleries.” Participating galleries include the Rex Irwin Gallery, Barry Keldoulis Gallery, Wentworth Galleries, Damien Minton Gallery, Wilson Street Gallery, Charles Hewitt Gallery, Orange Regional Gallery, Bathurst Regional Gallery, Cowra Regional Gallery, Western Plains Cultural Centre and the Cudgegong Gallery in Gulgong. Some exciting matches have already been made, so watch this space!
The event was presented by Arts Northern Rivers, in partnership with Arts OutWest, Orana Arts and Industry & Investment NSW.

Australia council report on arts and creative industries
Australia should seek new and liberating ways to bring together the arts, popular culture and the creative industries, according to a new report from the Australia Council titled Arts and creative industries. Prepared by Professor Justin O’Connor of the Creative Industries Faculty at Queensland University of Technology, the report looks at ways in which the policy relationship between these often polarised sectors of arts and creative industries might be re-thought and approached more productively. Arts and creative industries suggests there is in fact no dividing line between publicly-funded arts, popular culture and the blossoming businesses of the creative sector—and national policy should reflect this. The report is available for download from the Australia Council website at http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/news/

Saltwater Freshwater Art
The Saltwater Freshwater Arts Alliance is proud to present Saltwater Freshwater Art, a unique publication introducing 39 Aboriginal visual artists from the Mid North Coast of NSW. The project began with the formation of the visual artist living map—a database of practicing Aboriginal visual artists living between Karuah in the south and Coffs Harbour in the north, which includes Worimi, Birpai, Dunghutti and Gumbaynggirr nations. Approximately 180 artists were unearthed and 39 were selected to appear in this publication, which combines images of their art with stories of their life and work. An essay written by Professor Margo Neale, Principal Advisor (Indigenous) and Senior Curator at the National Museum of Australia, gives context to the artwork, its cultural value and where it sits in the lineage of art history in this country. Saltwater Freshwater Art retails for $39 and is available online at www.saltwaterfreshwater.com.au. Image: Rex Winston/Walford, 'Milky Way Dreaming', 2009

Australia Wide Two
The Australia Wide Two exhibition showcases the talents of Australia's Ozquilt Network, demonstrating the scope and variety of contemporary art quiltmaking across the country. The Ozquilt Network imposes as few creative restrictions as possible so that finished quilts reflect the personal experiences, styles and attitudes of their makers. Their definition of a quilt is simply 'a stitched, layered textile', meaning artists may use the techniques and materials of their choice. Ozquilt Network is Australia’s national organisation of art quilters founded in 1998 to promote contemporary quiltmaking in Australia. Curated by Pamela Fitzsimons, Margery Goodall and Dr Belinda Von Mengersen, Australia Wide Two will excite viewers with the infinite possibilities of ‘the quilt’ in art. Presenters interested in exhibiting Australia Wide Two are invited to contact Choy-Lin Williams: Tel 02 4567 7247, Email quiltmakers@ozquiltnetwork.org.au
