Highlights
From Kempsey to the City: Contemporary Mission Art
12 May - 20 June 2011
Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative is honoured to present respected artist Milton Budge accompanied by his nephew Anthony Flanders and Dorsey Smith. Documenting real-life experiences, the exhibition will revisit old haunts and re-engage its audience with mid North Coast Aboriginal art through three very unique perspectives; one mob, one river, three very different styles. With this show Milton Budge has come full circle, having first ever exhibited with Boomalli in their 1989 group show “Kempsey Koori Artists”. Anthony Flanders is an emerging artist exhibiting alongside his uncle for the first time. His intricate and vibrant work documents stories past and present. Also related to Budge, Dorsey Smith has been an active contributor to the NSW Indigenous arts scene since 1985 and has been a valuable asset to a number of Boomalli exhibitions in years past. The exhibition will run from 12 May - 20 June at 55-59 Flood St, Leichhardt. For more information visit www.boomalli.com.au/upcoming-exhibition.html.

Carved Trees: Aboriginal Cultures of Western NSW
Until 26 June 2011
A lost Indigenous art form will be re-discovered when rare surviving photographs of traditional carved trees in western NSW go on public display for the first time in Australia at the State Library of NSW. Intricate patterns were often carved into trees by the Wiradjuri and Gamilaroi people of NSW to mark the burial sites of significant people. Created by male artists using mostly stone tools, the carvings also marked the sites where boys were initiated into manhood. The exhibition presents an inspiring selection of photographs from 1920s to 1940s, drawn from the State Library’s extensive Clifton Cappie Towle collection of over 1,000 images of Aboriginal objects and sites in NSW. The exhibition is free and will be at the State Library of NSW until 26 June 2011. Head to www.sl.nsw.gov.au for more information.

Natty Knitters of Griffith - 'The Knitted Garden'
Since coming together in June 2009 for 'World Wide Knit in Public Day', the Natty Knitters of Griffith have moved on from traditional expectations of knitting groups. After knitting blankets for Wrap With Love - an organisation that sends blankets and wraps around the world to areas of poverty or struck by disaster - the Natty Knitters entered a knitted vase of daffodils and narcissi into the 'Flower Power' exhibition at Griffith Art Gallery. The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response from local artists as well as the general public spurred a new direction for the group. After gaining a grant from Regional Arts NSW through the Country Arts Support Program, in late 2010 the group went on to complete their most ambitious project to date, 'The Knitted Garden' - a 4.6mx3.6m life-size public exhibit. 'The Knitted Garden' exhibition is touring the south west of NSW throughout May, June and July, with dates in Moulamein, Conargo, Hay, Deniliquin, Balranald and Coleambally.

This Month at Hothouse Theatre
Until June 5
Turns Reg Livermore and Nancye Hayes star in the production of Turns at the Albury Entertainment Centre on May 17 & 18. Reg had the idea of writing this when he worked with Nancye a couple of years back on a production of My Fair Lady. Despite both of them having had long careers in the industry, they had never had the opportunity to work together before. Hence, the idea for Turns was born.
Reading of Sarah Kane's 'Crave' Sarah Kane was one of the most important playwrights to emerge in the last decade of the 20th century. Largely ignored during her lifetime, she’s now one of the most performed playwrights internationally. The rehearsed reading of Crave will be the first time one of her plays has been publicly presented in the region.
