Country Arts Support Program gives
148 new projects the go ahead in 2007
19 March 2007
- Full
list of projects below
Regional Arts NSW is delighted to announce a long list of successful applications
for funding from the Country Arts Support Program (CASP) for 2007. This year 148
new arts projects have got the go-ahead in regional, rural and remote NSW communities
thanks to a CASP grant, and the range of activities is remarkable: from opera
training to hip hop dance, from digital filmmaking to salt-fired pottery, from
jewellery-making to crime-fiction writing.
"This program is a great example of how a relatively small amount of funding
can have a major impact in regional areas, with literally thousands of people
standing to benefit," said Elizabeth Rogers, CEO of Regional Arts NSW.
CASP is a key regional arts funding program for NSW which provides support
to employ artists in locally initiated arts and cultural projects. The aim is
to provide access to arts activities for small communities, to encourage communities
to work together on cultural projects, to foster cultural diversity in the regions
and to ensure that regional and rural areas have an artistic voice.
Grants of between $300 and $3,000 are provided form a total pool of $200,000
which is devolved to Regional Arts NSW from the NSW Government. Recommendations
on funding are made locally, by regional CASP assessment panels coordinated by
the Regional Arts Boards. Applications from local government areas not serviced
by a Regional Arts Board are assessed by the State CASP assessment panel which
meets in Sydney to approve the final allocations.
"This year's funding round again demonstrates the vital role that this
funding program plays for communities in regional NSW," Ms Rogers said. "Most
of these projects simply wouldn't get going ahead without A CASP grant."
This year there were 235 applications for funding received from every region
of the State, with a total request of some $483,000 - an 18% increase in last
year's figure. A total of 77 submissions were received from first-time applicants
(32%) and 148 grants were approved.
Some of the highlights among this year's list are:
- A series of performances
by the Riverina Theatre Company designed to engage and entertain heavily drought
affected areas in Coolamon.
- Monthly arts, artefacts
and dance camps at the Yaama Festival site in Bourke involving young people and
Aboriginal elders.
- A youth filmmaking
project at the Kingscliff RSL in the Northern Rivers, teaching students filmmaking
skills while recording living histories from local World War II veterans.
- A touring program
of over 25 public concerts and school workshops by the Sculthorpe String Quartet
with didjeridu performer, William Barton and percussionist Timothy Constable,
across the South East.
- A crime fiction workshop,
historical display and 'whodunit' murder mystery evening at the Broken Hill Writers
Centre.
- A project by the Tallong
community to paint a large, very old concrete tank in the village centre as part
of a campaign to restore community pride.
- Screenings of three
silent movies with accompaniment by theatre organist, David Johnston, on one of
the best pipe organs in regional Australia, at St Matthews Anglican Church in
Albury.
- ... and many more.
Look out for a CASP project coming up near you!
