NEW STAR ATTRACTIONS AT GROUNDSWELL OCTOBER 10-13
Author Doris Pilkington has confirmed she will be attending a Q&A at a special Groundswell screening of Rabbit Proof Fence in Albury on Saturday 12 October, following the launch of the third in her extraordinary trilogy at the Groundswell Opening Night Gala on Thursday 10. Prominent independent Pacific producer, Makerita Urale has joined the line-up as first keynote speaker on Friday 11. The SplingFring cultural festival calendar has been released. There's an additional tour on the program and a number of new features have been added to the forums, workshops and clinics line-up. METROSCREEN INDIGENOUS MENTORSHIP SCHEME 2003
With assistance from the NSW Film and Television Office Metro Screen is offering four subsidized places for Indigenous people with or without prior video/filmmaking experience to make their own film. This scheme aims to encourage new Indigenous filmmakers to develop their skills and experience in television and video production and to enter employment within the film and television industry. Successful applicants will be assisted by an Indigenous mentor/producer in the development, production and post production of their film. GETTY (J. PAUL) TRUST GRADUATE INTERNSHIPS 2003-2004
Eight month long internships and twelve month long conservation internships to graduate students who intend to pursue careers in art museums and related fields of the visual arts, humanities, and sciences. Competitions, Awards + Prizes

THE BIG ISSUE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Giving filmmakers the chance to have their short film shown in major cinemas around Australia, the Festival is held at Sydney's Valhalla, Melbourne's Cinema Nova, the Judith Wright Centre in Brisbane, Mercury Cinema in Adelaide as well as arthouse cinemas in six cities in northern England. Submissions can be as short as 30 seconds but no longer than 10 minutes and must incorporate a homeless or unemployed character/person or the words "what's the big issue?" somewhere in the film. VACANT LOT AWARDS
Hosted by the Hunter Writers Centre, the Vacant Lot competition aims to promote and recognise local writers' work. The competition derives its name from the vacant lot next to the Newcastle Community Arts Centre that was initially considered for the site of a purpose built Writer's Centre. There are 3 categories: Poetry, Short Story and Writing for Children. First place $150, with three highly commended certificates also given for each category. 8TH AUSTRALIAN BUSH LAUREATE AWARDS
Awards to recognised excellence in published and recorded Australian bush poetry. Past winners include Frank Daniel, Kelly Dixon, Slim Dusty, Bob Miller, The Naked Poets, Dobe Newton, Carmel Randle, Ray Rose, Alli Ryan, Bill Scott, Bruce Simpson and R M Williams. There are four categories: Book of the Year, Album of the Year, Single Recorded Performance of the Year and the special Judith Hosier Heritage Award. Open to verse recorded and published between October 1, 2001 and September 30, 2002, Winners are presented with an attractive, finely crafted sculpture of a pen in the shape of a gum-leaf at a gala presentation in Tamworth on January 21.

MIRIAM HYDE AWARD FOR COMPOSER-PIANISTS
This new innovative competition offered by the Australian Society of Musicology and Composition is based upon entrants' own performances of their own piano compositions. CALL FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES
Rural Society, a refereed journal published by the Centre for Rural Social Research at Charles Sturt University seeks articles for the 2003 themed issue- "Culture and the arts in regional, rural and remote Australia". Prospective authors are invited to submit abstracts which address issues concerning culture and the arts in and about non-metropolitan Australia. Contributions which analyse the role, significance, status, or contribution of culture and the arts to society in regional, rural and remote areas and particularly scholarly articles examining the significance of specific events are sought. COMPOSE FOR THE SONG COMPANY
In partnership with the Australian Music Centre, The Song Company is calling for composers up to 35 years of age to submit proposals for their participation in workshops to be held in Sydney during late January/early February 2003. Up to 15 composers will be selected for the workshop process. Two sessions of 30 minutes will be dedicated to each sketch/piece and a selection of those pieces will be offered full rehearsal process and a public performance on 8 February 2003 to be recorded by ABC Classic FM. 2003 ANNUAL AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL PLAYWRIGHTS' CONFERENCE
The Australian National Playwrights' Centre is calling for new projects to be developed for its 30th annual conference, to be held in Canberra from April 21 to May 3, 2003. This is Australia's largest working theatre conference, where professional theatre artists nationwide come together for a two week period, working on new plays for the stage in an intensive, creative and supportive environment. Submissions are sought that can be workshopped during the conference period. These may include preliminary ideas towards a theatre piece or a more developed draft of a script.

THE ART OF BIRTHING
Expressions of interest are sought from visual and performing artists for the 'Art of Birthing', an exhibition that will centre around the celebration of birth, pregnancy and parenthood, which will coincide with Mothers' Day in May 2003. This is a fundraising vehicle for the Maternity Coalition, a not-for-profit organisation committed to improving maternity care for women during and after birth. Entries are open to artists working in media including sculpture, photography, jewellery, fine art and performance, and proceeds from the sale of artwork during the exhibition will be shared equally between the artists and the Maternity Coalition. Exhibition dates May 7-18, 2003.

ABORIGINAL CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS (A.C.P.A) AUDITIONS
Indigenous People aged 17 and over are sought to audition for the ACPA Certificate IV Performing Arts Course in Brisbane which provides diverse skills in Acting, Dance, and Singing. Auditions will be held from 13 October to 10 November in Brisbane and major regional centres and the course starts in January 2003. ABSTUDY is available to suitable applicants. Applications are essential to gain an audition, which must last for 3 minutes in your preferred performing arts form. Alternate arrangements for auditions outside of Brisbane can be arranged. WORKING THE SURFACE

MASTER CLASS WITH LINO ALVAREZ

A two day workshop with Mexico born ceramic artist, Lino Alvarez, renowned for his large scale hand built customer works. THE NATIONAL YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL
October 3 - 7, Newcastle
People from all over the country are invited to perform, give workshops, join discussion panels, collaborate, meet people or just soak up the event's atmosphere. There are lots of ways to get involved. Festival organisers are also calling for people to put up flyers around their regional town. And volunteers are also needed for bar staff, information desk, facilitators for panels, stage crews - a fun way to get into the festival with plenty of opportunity to see stuff going on (also provides some experience in the running of such a mammoth event). CONFLUENCE: MID NORTH COAST SCULPTURE AND PUBLIC ARTS FORUM
