AUSTRALIA COUNCIL
RECOGNITION FOR REGIONAL ARTS AUSTRALIA
The Australia Council for the Arts has made a $420,000 investment
in a new strategic partnership with Regional Arts Australia - and there's
more to come. The new funding, which is to be invested in infrastructure,
communications and the RAA national conference in 2004, is a significant
recognition of RAA's leadership role and achievements to date. [more]
REGIONAL ARTS FUND - DOUBLE OR NOTHING?
The future of the Regional Arts Fund hangs in the balance as the Government
enters into Budget preparation for 2004. The Regional Arts Fund was established
by the Federal Government in 1996 and renewed in the 2001/02 Budget for
a three year period, but this comes to an end next June and no commitment
has been made to the continue it. [more]
QUICK TURNAROUND GRANTS FOR 2003-2004 EXHAUSTED
Strong demand for the Regional Quick Turnaround Grants program has led
to the expenditure of all available funds for the 2003-2004 year within
only three months. [more]

GRANTS FOR REGIONAL NSW
38 grants for a total of $485,388 were made under the latest round of
the Festivals Australia program, which provides communities across regional
Australia with the opportunity to present and participate in a wide range
of cultural events and activities. The list of grants in regional NSW
includes:
- $13,520 to The
Dorrigo Film and Documentary Festival for 'The Young Filmmakers Silent
Movie Production Camp'.
- $20,000 to the
Mallee Hen Cooperation for 'A Feastful of Fiesta' at the Nymagee Outback
Music Festival.
- $3,000 to the
Hastings Choristers for the Piroska Varga-Massed Choir Conductor and
Workshop presenter at 'A Weekend of Song' Hastings Choral Festival.
- $34,000 to Shear
Outback for the 'Sculptural Sheep Pen Maze' at the Festival of the Blade.
- $20,000 to La
Festa for the Finale Carnivale at the La Festa - Faces of Australia
in Griffith.
- $10,400 to the
Milparinka Heritage and Tourism Association for the Milparinka Muster
at the 'Once a Jolly Swagman' Festival.
- $14,000 to the
Tumut Falling Leaf Festival for the 'Celebration of the Spirit' at Tumut's
Falling Leaf Festival.

Yuin Folk Club for the 'Multicultural Dance Project' at the Cobargo

VISIONS OF AUSTRALIA
GRANTS FOR REGIONAL NSW
21 exhibitions have received grants totalling $926,345 in the latest round
of Visions of Australia, which provides grants to cultural and community
organisations to tour exhibitions of historical and scientific material,
visual arts and craft, multimedia and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
culture throughout Australia. Regional NSW is to receive a range of exhibitions
through the program, thanks to grants to:
- Bookbinding Exhibitions
Australia for a tour of One Book, Many Bindings to the Griffith
Regional Art Gallery, Macquarie Regional Library in Dubbo, the Orange
City Library and the Parkes Shire Library.
- Campbelltown City
Bicentennial Art Gallery for a tour of John Peart Retrospective
(working title) to the Lismore Regional Art Gallery, the New England
Regional Art Museum, Tamworth City Gallery and the Wagga Wagga Regional
Art Gallery.

ARTISTS LIVE IN
POVERTY AND REGIONAL ARTISTS ARE DOING IT TOUGHEST OF ALL
The Australia Council for the Arts has just released a new survey of the
economic circumstances of artists which reveals that over half of Australia's
estimated 45,000 practising professional artists earn less than $7,300
from their art in a year - and regional artists are worse off than their

In response to growing demand from councils for a practical guide to developing
public art and placemaking policy, the Local Government and Shires Associations
of NSW have developed The Public Art Resource Guide for Local Government.

Congratulations to Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery which
has won the NSW Tourism Award for Business Excellence in the category

FLICKS IN THE
STICKS - CINEMA IN REGIONAL NSW
Saturday 6 December, James Theatre, Dungog
Flicks in the Sticks is a one-day conference organised by the NSW Film
& Television Office (FTO) and held twice-yearly in regional NSW communities.
The Dungog program includes presenters Peter Castaldi, cinema operator
from Byron Bay, projectionist Alan Butterfield on technical requirements
and Phil Turner from Community Care Underwriting Agency to discuss public
liability issues. Delegates will also hear how the residents of Bowraville
re-established their community cinema after a 30 year absence, and find
out what's involved in organising a local film festival from the coordinator
of the South East Film Festival. The day concludes with a free public
screening of Martha's New Coat at the James Theatre for residents of Dungog

TATTOO: ACROSS
TIME AND PLACE
Until 20 December, Dubbo
An exhibition which examines the transition of tattoo from prison culture
to popular culture. Curated by Dr Leigh Summers, the exhibition comprises
40 photographs of local tattooed subjects, whose bodily decoration celebrates
love, death, triumph and adversity. The exhibition includes oral histories

GRADUATE DIPLOMA
IN COMMUNITY CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT
Community Arts Network of SA Inc. is now accepting applications for its
nationally accredited course, Graduate Diploma in Community Cultural Development.
The course is unique in that it combines the theory and practice of arts
management with community development. It is aimed at people working via
the arts (theatre, craft, music, writing etc) and any person working in
collaboration with the community-recreation officers, social and youth
workers, teachers, with the focus of enriching community life through
art. The course specifically addresses the skills and knowledge required
to work as a community based arts practitioner or as a coordinator of
community arts programs. It is delivered by distance mode, over two years

LI'L ELVIS JONES
AND THE TRUCKSTOPPERS: THE EXHIBITION

This exhibition tells the story of animation and is based on the Australian
Children's Television Foundation's animated series of Li'l Elvis Jones
& The Truckstoppers, which screens regularly on ABC TV. The exhibition
includes a host of interactive features combining sight and sound in an

additional qualifications from the Film Televsion Radio and Multimedia

Following the huge success of the inaugural Accessing the Arts program
in 2002, over forty major arts and cultural organisations in NSW have

for Accessing the Arts 2003. The program as a whole focuses on access
issues and the inclusion of people with disabilities, both as artists/performers

ABC SEEKING MUSICIANS
Fresh Air is a regional production fund initiative to increase
the awareness of contemporary music talent coming out of regional Australia.
Selected tracks from the Fresh Air project will be played by local
ABC radio, Radio National and DIG over the summer period and beyond. There
is not one major winner of this initiative, rather the project is designed
to give musicians an opportunity to gain national exposure for their music.
Artists will also be brought to the attention of ABC Music and ABC Music
Publishing, with the possibility of further discussions as they see appropriate.
To be eligible for Fresh Air, you must be unsigned and unpublished and
you must live in a regional area of Australia. You can send in a maximum
of three tracks, but they have to be of broadcast quality and on a CD

The Gordon Darling Foundation is a perpetual public charitable trust established
in 1991 to assist in promoting the visual arts through public institutions
Australia-wide. Support is available for projects of all kinds in the
visual arts (other than capital works) and with consideration given to
visionary projects that might not otherwise receive funding. Projects
will be expected to attract considerable public exposure. Funding is available

GRANTS SCHEME
Grants from the Crime Prevention Division of the NSW Attorney General's
Department of up to $15,000 in the categories: Graffiti in Schools, Graffiti

and the Community. Open to Local Councils, schools, Police and Community
Youth Clubs and other relevant community organisations for projects that

AUSTRALIAN FILM
COMMISION GRANTS - DOCUMENTARIES
Grants to assist the early development of pitching materials for outstanding
projects, to enable them to then attract marketplace development or production
finance. The AFC is seeking to
invest in documentary projects which not only exhibit strong original
ideas and a skilful grasp of documentary form and storytelling, but also
provide professional development opportunities for key team members. In
this way the AFC's role in documentary production is distinctive and different
from the FFC/Broadcaster Accord and Non-Accord Programs and the National

IN TASMANIA
The Tasmanian Writers' Centre invites Australian and international writers

ART PRIZE
Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery invites all artists who are residents
of Australia to submit works or or with paper for the 2004 Outback Art
Prize. The Awards will be given for work which significantly addresses
the theme of the prize, the Australian Outback. This year's prize consists
of three 'Acquisitive Prizes' - 1st place of $5000, 2nd $3000 and 3rd

DOGWOOD
PLAYWRIGHTS INITIATIVE
The Dogwood Playwrights Initiative is essentially a playwriting competition.
One of its goals is to get writers to focus on rural issues in the 21st
century, giving a voice to those with a life that struggles with problems
and rejoices in successes that are unique to rural and remote Australia.
It is open to plays of any genre that use creative ways of expressing
rural and remote life in a 'dramatic' form. The Dogwood Playwrights Initiative
is open to any Australian resident and the first prize is $5,000. Contact

HENRY
MAYER MEDIA PRIZE
The Henry Mayer Media Prize was established in 1991 to honour Professor
Mayer's lifelong contribution to the study of politics and the media,
with a particular interest in the history and politics of Indigenous people.
In his will he explicitly expressed the wish to encourage the First People
in their struggle for self-determination. The inaugural winners of 2003
Prize were Allan Collins, Cinematography, Beneath Clouds; Highly
Commended - Lera Bennell, Editor, Black Business Magazine; Paulette

NEW LOOK VISUAL ARTS WEB SITE FROM NAVA
The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) has relaunched the
Visual Arts Net web site with a new look and added features. The relaunch
marks NAVA's 20th year as the nation's peak body representing the interests
of the Australian visual arts and craft sector. 'Visual Arts Net' was
built as a gateway site for the entire Australian visual arts and craft
sector in 2000 and represents NAVA's commitment to providing essential
resources for Australia's arts and craft practitioners, other arts professionals,
educators, students and lovers of art. The newly designed home page makes
navigating and finding NAVA's news and resources easier. New features
on Visual Arts Net include a services directory, publications and research

Medea by Jane Ahlquist is currently available for touring to your
local community or school. Medea, the classic Greek tragedy, was
on the HSC English syllabus for the past two years and is considered highly

been highly praised and proved very popular in several regional performances
