HARVEST OF ENDURANCE
SCROLL
A magnificent, handpainted, 50 metre long Chinese scroll representing
the history of Chinese immigration to Australia was acquired by the National
Museum of Australia in 1992 for the National Historical Collection. The
scroll illustrates the many stories of Chinese contact with, and immigration
to Australia over a time span of approximately two centuries. Stories
of hardship and survival, resourcefulness and reward are recorded in the
traditional gongbi style of painting in the scroll, which is viewed from
right to left. The artist referred to the process of creating the scroll
as imagining the history represented by a melody or 'a sound wave with
peaks and troughs'. Hence the principles of yin and yang are fundamental
to the scroll. View the scroll online at www.nma.gov.au/harvest.
