REGIONAL ARTS
NSW SECURES INCREASED FUNDING FOR RADOS, CASP
Following representations by Regional Arts NSW to the Ministry for the
Arts last year, the State Government announced a much needed increase
of $700,000 in funding for the Regional Arts NSW network in last week's
budget, including:
* a doubling of grant money for the Community Arts Support Program (CASP)
to $200,000
* an increase in operational funding for the eleven Regional Arts Development
Officers (RADOs) plus
* funding for new RADO positions in the two remaining unserviced areas
of the state.
Regional Arts NSW will be working with the Local Government and Shires
Associations, the NSW Ministry for the Arts and the local communities
over the following months to establish new Regional Arts Boards and employ
Regional Arts Development Officers in the last two areas to be brought
into the Regional Arts network in NSW: the Far North Coast and Orana regions.

FUND (NSW) APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
The Regional Arts Fund is a major Commonwealth Government initiative to
support the arts in regional and remote Australia. The aim is to enable
regional arts programs to give Australians - wherever they live - better
access to opportunities to practice and experience the arts. Applications
for funding in the categories of Residencies, Mentorships, Partnerships
and Two Year Projects are now open. Everything you need to apply is online

ADDITIONAL REGIONAL
MUSEUMS, FILM AND PUBLIC LIBRARIES FUNDING
Other announcements in the recent State Budget include:
* An extra $300,000 for the regional museums network, to assist new museums
to become regional leaders, providing support and advice to many small
museums in surrounding rural areas.
* An additional $311,000 to the NSW Film & Television Office's Industry
and Audience Development Program to provide training for projectionists,
more touring film festivals and local film events and
* An increase in general grants to public libraries of $1.5m (to $18.92m),
much of which will benefit public libraries in rural and regional NSW.
INFORMATION SESSION
FOR CCD BOARD APPLICANTS
21 June, Goonellabah
A General Information Session by the Community Cultural Development Board
of the Australia Council for the Arts for potential applicants. 10:00
to 11:30am at Lismore Council Chambers, 43 Oliver Avenue, Goonellabah.
Followed by Individual meetings (by appointment - contact Tracy De Sylva
el 1800 226 912). The Information Session will be of most interest and
benefit to first time applicants, providing an overview of the Australia
Council, the CCD Board and its grants categories. CCD Board applications
close 15 September.

ACADEMIC WRITERS
ON CONTEMPORARY MUSIC WANTED
A New Music Publication to be launched during the 2002 Melbourne Fringe
Festival invites submissions. The primary focus is the academic study
of contemporary music genres and their artists, eg., nu-metal, post-industrial,
electronica, neo-jazz, art metal/art rock, from top 40-pop to underground.
Aiming to be a high quality publication, it has fairly specific writers'
guidelines. If you're interested in publishing writing about the effects
of contemporary music on people and vice-versa, in any genre, write to

YOUTH REPORTERS
INITIATIVE
The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) will be held in Johannesburg
from 26 August to 4 September this year. To ensure that the Summit engages
with young people around the globe, the search is underway for a team
of youth reporters to work on the Summit website and daily newsletter.
Applicants must be aged between 16 and 25 years, fluent in English and
have previous experience in journalism. Good writing and interviewing
skills, computer literacy and some experience in sustainable development
issues are also required. The Youth Reporters Initiative is endorsed by
the United Nations Environmental Program For more information contact

RADIO PLAYS SOUGHT
FOR 2-SER COMMUNITY RADIO
"Play it By Ear" is a radio play program that is currently airing
from 9.00 to 9.30 on Friday mornings on 2-SER 107.3FM. They require scripts
for short plays between 5 and 30 minutes long and are also looking for
episodic pieces. Recently aired was Melissa Bruce's "Addiction Collage"
; a documentary style collection of young voices recorded in Northern
NSW on the theme of addiction (commissioned by BIG hART as part of their
program exploring inter-generational addictive behaviour in rural Australia).

THE AMA (NSW)
MEDIA AWARDS FOR RURAL HEATH REPORTING
The Australian Medical Association (NSW) in conjunction with Pfizer invites
entries for the AMA (NSW) Media Awards for Rural Health Reporting 2002.
The awards, which are an initiative designed to promote a deeper understanding
of the many health issues facing rural NSW, are open to Australian print,
radio or television journalists working in NSW. Cash prizes and certificates

BOOK OF THE YEAR
AWARD 2002
The Courier Mail invites entries for Book of the Year, which carries a
$30,000 prize. Entries are open to books written by Australian authors
and published in Australia between 1 July 2001 and 30 June 2002. The shortlist
will be announced in September and the winner announced on Friday 4 October

NESCAFE BIG BREAK
COMPETITION
There are twelve cash prizes of $20,000 and eight cash prizes of $2000
each be won in this year's Nescafé Big Break Competition, which
has a total of over a quarter-of-a-million dollars to give away. (That's
a lot of beans). The Big Break is for young people with an ambition or
a dream who are just getting started and who need a bit of a financial
leg up. The age range this year has been extended to 16-24 years, with
the prizes split evenly between the two categories of 16 to 19 and 20

JUNK LOVE - REVERSE
GARBAGE ART AND DESIGN COMPETITION
Two prizes of $500 each in the major categories of Art & Design and
Sustainable Design Plus a host of smaller categories including visual

what might otherwise be considered "junk" or "garbage"

LLOYD REES MEMORIAL
YOUTH ART AWARD 2002
An acquisitive national art prize of $4000 for a painting, drawing or
print open to artists aged between 18 and 28. There's an entry fee of
$22. The award is sponsored by Civica, Lane Cove Council and Centrehouse
Community Art Centre. The exhibition runs from 21 to 29 September and
will be open daily 10am - 4pm at the Cove Room, Lane Cove Council, 48

IDENTIFYING TRANSFERABLE
SOCIAL ENTERPRISE MODELS - A FORUM
3 July, Sydney
Enterprising communities across the country are looking for social enterprise
models that can create jobs, build social capital, alleviate disadvantage
and generate wealth and well-being. This forum aims to identity a select
group of social enterprise models that are transferable across communities.
Social entrepreneurs are invited to submit ideas and proposals for the
forum covering any field, from recycling to micro-credit to quality fast
food to community tourism. Proposals may be current enterprises or venture
ideas, big or small. Selected models will then be developed over the remainder
of 2002 in formats suitable for roll out in 2003. These may include packaged
do-it-yourself kits or more elaborate franchising or licensing arrangements.

VISUAL ARTS ONLINE (VAO) COURSES
July - 20 September
11 October - 20 December
Assisting arts practitioners to acquire or revise basic art skills or
to build up a folio for tertiary applications. There are 5 individual
units, each with approximately six activities which run for ten weeks.
Complete the course at your own pace. VAO takes advantage of the unique
characteristics of the internet for further research and for critique
of works through its online forum. $70 for Flying Arts' members and $77
for non-members per unit, with five to choose from in each term (one per

DANCE IN THE LANDSCAPE:
EXPANDING THE HORIZON
9 - 11 August Brisbane
The second national forum for community dance is hosted by Ausdance Queensland
and funded by both the Dance and the Community Cultural Development Boards
of the Australia Council. Bringing together community dance practitioners
with community cultural development workers interested in learning more
about the potential of partnerships with dance, the forum will link dance
as practice in different landscapes - cultural, environmental, social,
aesthetic. Dialogue, debate and practical sessions will be supported by
the development of a presence in cyberspace and a market-style opportunity
to profile community dance to potential program partners. Cost $100 or

HERITAGE AND THE
OUTBACK CONFERENCE
8 -10 November 2002, Burra, SA
Organised by: the National Trust of South Australia and held in conjunction

The Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts

projects which enhance the festival's cultural program through its Festivals

Grants are available for projects in the following categories:
* Environmental Restoration and Rehabilitation Program: Community Grants
Program & Local Government Grants Program - Grants of $5000 to $100,000
for community organisations (total program $1 million).
* Environmental education: Grants of $5,000 to $100,000 available to community
organisations (total program $500,000).
* Eco schools grants program (available to schools only): Grants of $1500
to 80 schools
* 'Protecting Our Places' Program -. Grants of $2000 to $20,000 for Aboriginal
communities, with the opportunity for several grants of up to $45,000
to be funded for outstanding projects. Total program: $350,000 (Note:
