REGIONAL ARTS FUND GRANTS $213,000 FOR 15 PROJECTS ACROSS NSW
With 48 applicants requesting over $800,000, the second round of the Fund under Regional Arts NSW was bound to be fiercely competitive. In the end, after lengthy deliberations, the Assessment Panel decided on 15 successful applications, with a total commitment of $213,372 - money which will go to a wide range of important projects from every region of state. TWO NEW RABS GET LOCAL GOVERNMENT, COMMUNITY GO-AHEAD
Two new Regional Arts Boards (RABs) in the Central Orana and Far North Coast regions are one step closer to fruition following extensive consultations conducted by Regional Arts NSW, the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Lgov NSW in the two regions in November. The establishment of the two new RABs received strong endorsement by all sixteen potential local government contributors and community groups alike. Steering committees have been set up and are working with Regional Arts NSW towards the formation of the new Boards in February 2003. GRANT-WRITING WORKSHOPS FOR UNSERVICED REGIONS
Following a recommendation made last year by the State Country Arts Support Program (CASP) Assessment Committee, Regional Arts NSW will be conducting grant writing workshops for community organisations in the Central Orana, Illawarra/Shoalhaven and Far North Coast regions in the lead up to the CASP deadline on 14 March 2003. The dates for the workshops are as follows:

2003 INTERNATIONAL FUND FOR DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY (IFDP)
The IFDP aims to support documentary photographers worldwide. Through its annual competition, the fund awards grants of up to US$7000 each to photographers from six geographical regions of the world who are working on in-depth essays that address issues concerning social justice, political awareness, environmental impact or cultural education. FIREWORKS GALLERY NEW FLAMES ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM
Five artist-in-residences each for a period of five weeks in the studio/workshop space at Campfire Group Studios in Brisbane. Applications open to Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander artists who have already exhibited are wishing to further develop their careers. The residency is a structured program of professional development, skills and technical instruction/workshops, critical input, industry networking, cultural connections, collaborative projects and mentoring by senior artists. Artists will be provided with studio and workshop access, materials, inclusion in Campfire projects running at the time, accommodation, artist fees and studio exhibition. CAMDEN HEAD RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Developed by the Australia Council for the Arts' CCD Board in consultation with the Hastings Council and Camden Haven Adult and Community Education, the program offers a CCD artsworker a six to eight week period at the Pilot Station around July 2003. The Pilot Station is a self contained 1950's three bedroom cottage overlooking Pilot Beach, 35 km from Port Macquarie (NSW). An objective of the residency is to provide models for exploring environmental themes and issues through CCD practice. An Info Sheet is available from the CCD Board.

2003 NIKON SUMMER SALON AWARD
The Centre for Contemporary Photography is calling for entries from photomedia artists for this annual award. All types of analogue and digital photography, animation, CD-ROM and other interactive technologies, film, video and works in 3D accepted. All entrants will be exhibited at the Centre for Contemporary Photography, and prizes will be awarded in a number of different categories. There is no restriction on theme, but the maximum size of the artworks should not exceed 80cm x 80cm. Prizes include products from Nikon, Kodak and Polaroid. Entry costs $48/$28 (CCP members), registration closes December 20, 2002 and artworks are due January 24, 2003.

THE JOYCE PARKES WOMENS WRITERS PRIZE
Joyce Parkes, a noted poet, has donated this prize to encourage women writers and to foster an interest in Irish matters. Open to women of any nationality, to write an essay, maximum 1000 words on the topic "Irish heroines in real life or in fiction". Prize of $200, second and third entries will receive a certificate. Winning entries may be published in the Association's magazine, The Journal and on its website.

NORTHERN WOMEN SHORT VIDEO COMPETITION
As part of its presentation of the successful WOW Film Festival (world of Women) North Coast Camera will once again include this competition which is open to female residents in the Northern Rivers Region. Prizes include $1,000 Northern Star Best Film, $500 Southern Cross University School of Arts Best First Film, $500 Mary Gilhooleys Best Script, $500 FTO Audience Choice Award. Finalists to be judged by a selected panel of local female filmmakers and judging will be based on technical quality and content. All films must be written and directed by women who are residents of the Northern Rivers (Grafton - Tweed), made during 2002/2003, submitted on VHS and 10 minutes maximum in length.

MIETTA SONG RECITAL AWARD
Established in 1995 in honour of one of Australia's most influential figures in arts and hospitality, this award provides performance, training and competition opportunities, nationally and internationally, for singers of art song and their accompanists and aims to build audiences of art song through live performance, broadcasting and recording. Applicants are required to submit a recording which is auditioned anonymously by a preliminary judging panel of professional artists and musicians. The award competition will be held in Melbourne between April 12-13, 2003.

JULIE MILLOWICK ACQUISITIVE PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARD
This acquisitive award is the acknowledgement of the power of the still image. Works submitted must have been executed during the past two years and the mage should be created using traditional photographic techniques (including digital camera and digital manipulation - a images created solely by computer not eligible). Total prize pool $2,000. Announcement & Official Opening 29 March 2003 at Chambers Gallery, Castlemaine, Victoria. Festivals dates March 28 - April 6 2003.

CASTLEMAINE STATE FESTIVAL 2003 - CERAMICS, DRAWING + PHOTOGRAPHIC AWARDS
Based in central Victoria, the Castlemaine State Festival aims to encourage and support emerging Australian artists through its staging of theatre, music, dance and visual arts over a biennial 10-day period. Artists from across Victoria and Australia are invited to submit work for selection in the La Trobe University Ceramics Acquisitive Award with monetary prize to the value of $1,500, the Dominique Acquisitive Drawing Award value of $3,000 and the Millowick Acquisitive Photographic Award which is open to all residents of Australia, carries a $2,000 prize.

AUSTRALIAN PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT PRIZE
A major new photographic prize valued at $15,000 established The Art Gallery of New South Wales to promote contemporary portrait photography and excellence in all forms of still photo-based art. Entries open to works of new and innovative approaches to an established photographic genre. All photographic media considered including all types of analogue and digital photography. Entries must have been taken in the 12 months prior to the entry closing date. The new Australian Photographic Portrait Prize will be exhibited in conjunction with the 2003 Archibald Prize 22 March to 25 May 2003. 2003 ENERGY AUSTRALIA NATIONAL TRUST 10TH ANNUAL HERITAGE AWARDS
A unique opportunity to showcase individuals, organisations, government departments, educational and community groups who have successfully promoted or helped to conserve some part of Australia's natural, built or cultural heritage. Categories include Conservation - Built or Landscape Heritage, Adaptive Re-use, Cultural Heritage, Indigenous or Multicultural Heritage, Tourism, Electronic, Print, Education or Energy Management. ATYP NEW YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS AWARD
To celebrate its 40th year, the Australian Theatre for Young People has announced this new award for young writers between 15-18 and 19-26 years. Prizes from $250 to $2,000. Winners will also receive a written professional assessment of their work and professional memberships. While the two overall winners will have their plays produced as part of ATYP's 2003 production season. THE COOL BANANAS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL
Entries are open again to the Cool Bananas Short Film Festival. Films must be less than 10 minutes in length, include a banana and the phrase 'got it in one'. Films can be made in any format or genre and must be submitted on VHS tape. The films will be screened over several nights in July 2003 at the Jetty Memorial Theatre, Coffs Harbour. Prizes include a video camera, computer, video editing software, subscriptions and cash. Prizes will be awarded in Open, Youth, School and Local Categories and a special prize awarded for Best Performance by a Banana.

REGIONAL NSW E-ZONE IT YOUTH PROGRAM JANUARY 2003
Young people from Tweed Valley to Ulladulla and Wellington to Wilcannia will be able to take part in the new E-Zone IT Youth program this summer at 23 CTC locations throughout NSW. Community Technology Centres will be running regional gaming and website competitions and the program has joined with the Powerhouse Museum's Soundbyte.org virtual music lab to give young people the chance to cut their own digitally recorded CD. Young people can also go into participating CTCs to take part in local on-line gaming and website challenges where they can play-off against local, regional and state-wide competitors in various on-line games. The same profile will be used for young people to design their own website which can be hosted on their local CTC website.

WOMEN: GET YOUR IMAGINATIONS GOING - MATERIAL FOR NEW BOOK SOUGHT
Imagining Ourselves is an anthology of words and pictures from creative young women around the world being put together by the International Museum of Women; giving women in their twenties and early thirties the chance to share their essays, poetry, short stories, photography and visual art with the world. The Museum seeks a diverse, international cross-section of authors and artists aged 18-35 whose work, whether written or visual, loosely answer the questions - How do you see your world?

ABC RADIO REGIONAL PRODUCTION FUND
ABC Radio is looking for documentary features or series, music segments, drama, comedy, serials, short stories, history, poetry, discussion programs or creative broadcast events produced by residents who live outside of a major capital city. If you have an idea for a complete and delivered program which fits within an existing ABC Radio format, an original script, a collection of oral histories or a series of songs. Starring 8 actors (4 male, 4 female) Away is an award-winning play which has been voted Australia's favourite play many times in newspaper and magazine polls throughout the country. It has been compared with Summer of the Seventeenth Doll as one of the great classics about Australian life and has been on the high school syllabus for ten years. Set in the summer of 1967-8, the play follows the lives of three very different families as they head to the coast for their summer holidays. Often described as Australia's great play about loss and reconciliation, Away is both funny and heartbreaking. Set in post-war baby boom Australia, the play is full of characters we instantly recognise and care about.
Away is a set text in the Higher School Certificate Standard and Advanced English Courses.
