NEW REGIONAL ARTS
BOARDS - FULL STEAM AHEAD
Regional Arts NSW and Lgov were in Gilgandra last Friday for the first
meeting of the Central Orana Regional Arts Board Steering Committee, made
up of representatives from each of five contributing local councils/shires:
Coolah, Coonabarabran, Dubbo, Gilgandra and Narromine. (Wellington Shire
Council has decided to stay with the Arts OutWest region.) The first act
of the Steering Committee was to unanimously agree that the new RAB office
will be located in Gilgandra, with satellite offices in shires across
the region. So Gilgandra it is for the new Central Orana Regional Arts
Development Officer (see below).
The first meeting
of the Steering Committee for the Far North Coast Regional Arts Board
is in progress today in Ballina. Stay tuned to the Regional Arts NSW e-Bulletin
for all new Far North Coast Regional Arts Board developments.

FOR NEW CENTRAL ORANA RADO
Gilgandra, Salary $45,000
Applications have been called for the new position of Regional Arts Development
Officer (RADO) in Gilgandra. Working with the Steering Committee, the
RADO will establish the new Central Orana Regional Arts Board, an operational
office and develop a strategic plan for the RAB. Applicants must demonstrate
sound understanding of the issues, practices and processes of regional
arts development and local government and possess strong planning, consultation,
administration (including funding) and project development skills. For

TWEED SHIRE NAMED
CITY OF THE ARTS
The Premier and Arts Minister Bob Carr announced in January that Tweed
Shire will be NSW's Fifth City of the Arts. Tweed will receive $300,000
over two years for a range of cultural events including a BIG hART youth
film project, Not At Home; a project to help the area's traditional Bunjulung
people record family and personal histories, the creation of a Tweed public
art trail and a series of small festivals through the shire.
ORANGE GETS HALF
A MILL FOR THE CON
An extra $500,000 in State Government funding has been announced to go
towards extension to the Orange Regional Conservatorium. Coming on top
of $250,000 already provided for the project, the new boost will allow
the second stage of building to go ahead this year.
GRAFTON'S SARATON
THEATRE TO BE RESTORED
The State Government has provided $250,000 for the restoration and redevelopment
of the Saraton Theatre in Grafton. The theatre first opened in 1926 as
a venue for silent movies and was placed on the State Heritage Register
in 2000. The funding will assist with works including the replacement
of the roof, rewiring and asbestos removal, in cooperation with the NSW
Heritage Office.
BUSH FIRES CAUSE
DAMAGE FOR FLYING FRUIT FLY CIRCUS
Fires have damaged The Flying Fruit Fly Circus (FFFC) facilities at the
Wodonga Secondary College leaving $2 million worth of damage and destroying
invaluable materials including promotional posters of all the FFFC tours
and historical photographs. The FFFC training centre in Hovell Street
Albury remains completely operational but there will be no schooling for
the 60 Fruities until alternative arrangements can be made to accommodate
them.
TODD WILLIAMS
EN ROUTE TO STARDOM
At the recent Tamworth Country Music Festival Todd Williams was awarded
the Toyota Star Maker Award - a career development package including a
recording deal, media promotion, video clip and performance bookings.
Williams attended the College of Country Music in Tamworth in 2001 with
assistance from the NSW Ministry for the Arts' Indigenous Quick-Response
Music Fund.

The Reichstein Foundation is a philanthropic foundation that aims to be
a positive strategic catalyst for change, committed to advocacy and it
working in partnership with community organisations to improve, maintain
or restore human rights and social justice. The Foundation makes grants
of up to $20,000 in two funding rounds per year for projects which effect
structural change to benefit disadvantaged communities in Victoria. Projects
designed to challenge and change systems (such as policies, laws and practices)
are the Foundation's priority. Applicants must be incorporated not-for-profit

RUN_WAY 3 - YOUNG
AND EMERGING NEW MEDIA ARTISTS
RUN_WAY is a program designed by the Australia Council New Media Board
to extend and enliven the experience and understanding of interdisciplinary/new
media arts practice. The initiative is designed to provide opportunities
for young and emerging artists/artsworkers under 30 years of age to travel,
learn and develop new skills and/or understanding of interdisciplinary/new
media practice. Applicants can determine and implement a unique professional

ASOLO ARTFILM
FESTIVAL CALL FOR ENTRIES
The Asolo ArtFilm Festival, to be held in Asolo (Treviso), Italy 22 to
28 September of this year is a continuation of the "Festival Internazionale
del Film sull'Arte e di Biografie di Artisti"; set up in 1973 by
the Treviso Provincial Council. Thirty years on, in the light of advances
in visual languages, the Festival is being relaunched under the name Asolo
ArtFilm Festival, an international showcase of cinema, television, video
and info art. The competition has four main categories: Films on Art,
Artists' Lives, Video and Computer Art and Experimental Productions. Website

The 2003 ArtsRush poetry competition offers a first prize of $1000.00.

SCULPTURE BY THE
SEA 2003
Artists are invited to submit proposals or completed works for pre-selection
for Sculpture by the Sea 2003, a free to the public exhibition of over
100 sculptures in all materials and forms from across the world which
is staged along Sydney's famous 2km Bondi to Tamarama coastal walk. With
approximately 300,000 visitors, the exhibition is one of the largest temporary
sculpture exhibitions in the world. Sculpture sales in 2002 exceeded A$250
000 with artists' prizes and subsidies in excess of A$60 000. Contact

MOVING IMAGE FESTIVAL (LONDON)

NEOPOETRY DVD
Call for proposals from young Australians. New writing and audio/video
art needed for new DVD compilation titled Neopoetry. The neopoetry project
of text/video collaboration is designed to document transient modes of
written expression in a creative way that emphasizes the contemporary,
reflexive qualities of the various forms. This project has been assisted
by the Australia Council. Neopoetry will be released in September 2003
as a DVD compilation, purchasable online and in retail outlets. Solo and

ENDLESS HORIZONS
CONFERENCE
The Association for the Study of Australian Literature (ASAL) and the
Australasian Drama Studies Association (ADSA) present a linked annual
conferences, Endless Horizons: Looking Inwards & Outwards, 2003 which
will be held June 30 - July 4 in Brisbane. Broad themes include future
disciplinary directions and collaborations;' writing/performing the past
and future'; 'writing/performing the interior; body, skin, and text';
and 'in the realm of the senses (and of the censors)'. Proposals are invited
which examine some aspect of the themes. ADSA members are invited to offer
proposals for: academic papers, practical workshops, performances, panel
discussion groups, early career research papers or roundtable discussions,

The Australia Council seeks expressions of interest from groups or artists,

networks to provide a strong environment for the research and development

SERVICE
Open Shutter is an online service being developed by a group of young
Australian artists, for young Australian artists, with the aim to exhibit
the artwork of talented individuals to worldwide viewers. By exhibiting
with Open Shutter you'll pay no upfront fees or commission fees for artists,
if your work doesn't sell on Open Shutter then it doesn't cost you anything.
Other services offered will include Online Folio Management, Order Processing,
Distribution System and Informational Articles. Open Shutter also wants
to set up an art consultancy service for businesses looking to rent or
buy works. It's a way to gain exposure for your work. If there is enough

NEW FILM DISTRIBUTION
HANDBOOK FOR REGIONAL CINEMAS
A new publication to help regional cinemas to deal effectively with film
distribution companies from the NSW Film and Television Office. The Distribution
Guide provides comprehensive information about the way film distribution
and exhibition occurs in Australia and around the world and covers issues
such as film hire terms and conditions, release dates, box office figures,
print numbers and freight costs. It includes advice and suggestions for
working within the industry, achieving the most effective box office results,
successful programming for regional locations, and effective marketing
and promotional strategies. The Distribution Guide is now available from
the FTO for $25.00 including GST. An order form is available from the

ANPC SCRIPT ASSESSMENT
SERVICE
The Australian National Playwrights Centre offers professional assessments
of your play-script either by written report, by phone or in a face-to-face
meeting. Assessors are all experienced theatre practitioners and the service
is currently used by playwrights at all levels; from beginners to old
hands. Rates vary from $100 through to $240 for various levels of assessment

WEEKEND

Organised by the Armidale Music Foundation. The Foundation's annual weekend

amateur musicians of Northern NSW and Southern Queensland to join together
in rehearsal and performance of large scale choral works under the guidance

Many people know how to apply for funding. Far fewer have the skills to
influence government and change the way that funding is delivered. This
two day seminar presented by the Arts Management Advisory Group is about
the gentle art of helping the government to govern. It is about changing
government policy; increasing the amount of money allocated to a particular
area, creating new priorities, and - sometimes - rescuing your organisation
in the face a sheer hostility to its aims and objectives. What is the
key to running a successful campaign? How is policy developed? How can
you influence policy? How has arts policy evolved? Speakers include: Donald

- MOSAIC COURSE
18 - 20 April, Byron Bay
A 3 day course in designing and creating mosaics using nature as the source
of inspiration by professional mosaicist, Scott Harrower. Join him in
his studio in the Byron Bay hinterland for an inspirational journey into
this ancient medium. Various techniques and design issues covered using
the direct, indirect and Ravenna methods of production. Scott has designed
and produced works for the Queensland State Government, Brisbane City
