PREMIER ANNOUNCES $3.345M IN REGIONAL CAPITAL FUND GRANTS
Congratulations to all the following who have recently been granted infrastructure funding under the Premier's 2003 Regional Capital Fund, as announced recently by the Premier and Minister for the Arts, Mr Bob Carr:

  • $500,000 for the Orange Regional Conservatorium
  • $250,000 for the Saraton Cinema, Grafton
  • $1m towards the construction of the new Albury Regional Museum
  • $80,000 for the refurbishment and conservation of lthe New England Regional Art Museum and art collections, Armidale
  • $140,000 for the fitout of the Somerville Museum, Bathurst
  • $250,000 towards the fitout of the Broken Hill City Arts Gallery
  • $40,000 for the extension and fitout of the Raglan Gallery and Cultural Centre, Cooma
  • $1m towards the construction of the Queanbeyan Civic cultural Centre and Theatre
  • $40,000 to establish a community radio station for community and cultural use at the Montreal Community Theatre, Tumut
  • $15,000 towards the refurbishment of a new arts centre and home for the Eurobodalla Arts Council
  • $25,000 towards the upgrade of Lieder Theatre stage and auditorium in Goulburn
  • $5,000 towards the fitout of an exhibition space for local arts and crafts practitioners in Goulburn.

FOUR RADOS NOW ON TOP NSW ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEES
Last e-Bulletin we reported that RADOs Ruth Neave (Upper Hunter), Rod Ainsworth (Far West) and Richard Holloway (Mid North Coast) had been appointed to - respectively - the capital assistance committee, the museums committee and the community cultural development committees of the NSW Arts Advisory Council. What we failed to mention was that RADO Jack Ritche (North West) has also been appointed to the theatre committee. Committee members consider the hundreds of grant applications that are received each year by the NSW Ministry for the Arts and make recommendations to the Minister where funding should be allocated. Congratulations to all four RADOs.

NEW ARTS ON TOUR REGIONAL SUPPORT OFFICER
Ilana Kaplin has just joined Arts on Tour in a new position designed to assist and support community presenters in regional NSW to find the right product for their community; provide advice on managing resources; tips on marketing, funding and ideas on forging a viable touring circuit to help brings costs down. But first of all she wants hear from regional stakeholders about what their needs are and how Arts on Tour can better support and service those needs. NINE MORE INDENT GRANTS FOR YOUTH EVENTS IN NSW
Indent is celebrating National Youth Week by announcing a further $14,000 in One Off Grants to fund nine more drug and alcohol free all ages events in communities around NSW. This latest round compliments the $88,500 already committed in 2003 to Indent Partnership Grants around the state. Each event has been conceived by a team of young people who applied for the funding, and will oversee every detail of the production of their event. The events reflect a range of youth entertainment interests - from a night of punk bands to a weekend of breakdancing, rapping and R&B songwriting workshops. Regional NSW grant recipients include:

  • Lightning Ridge Youth Group (supported by Walgett Shire Council) $1,250
  • Outburst Youth Council (supported by Bland Shire Council) $1,000
  • Thirroul Indent Music Committee (supported by Thirroul Youth Project) $1,500
  • Youth Connections (supported by Bathurst PCYC) $2,000
  • Xpress (supported by Byron Youth Activities Centre) $2,000

REGIONAL ARTS NSW GRANT-WRITING GUIDE NOW ONLINE
A new resource from Regional Arts NSW developed as part of our recent grant-writing workshops in unserviced regions of NSW, the Grant Writing Guide has been compiled to assist non-profit community based organisations with submissions to the three grants programs administered by Regional Arts NSW:

  • The Country Arts Support Program (CASP)
  • The Regional Arts Fund (RAF) and
  • The Regional Quick Turnaround Grants Program.

YOUTH COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS INITIATIVE
The Foundation for Young Australians in partnership with the Enterprise and Career Education Foundation (ECEF) are offering between $40,000 and $80,000 to five groups of young people to become youth-led grant-making groups in their community :- identifying and addressing key issues for young people and allocating funds to projects that will create opportunities or enhance youth participation in the community. MYER FOUNDATION GRANTS - SOCIAL JUSTICE
Supporting processes, events and activities that resolve problems, address issues and make a positive measurable difference to society. The Foundation will provide support to social justice initiatives that explore how and why people are disadvantaged; assist disadvantaged people to have an effective voice on matters that affect them; provide mechanisms that redress inequities and the infringement of rights; explore ways young people can make an impact on the problems of school refusal, homelessness, self-harm, addiction and suicide; foster reconciliation with Aboriginal Australians to achieve a united Australia that respects their land, values their cultural heritage, and provides justice and equity for all. Assistance is also available for organisations providing services to people with temporary protection and bridging visas, and those who advocate for better

RECONCILIATION SONGWRITING COMPETITION
The NSW Reconciliation Council is running a songwriting competition To be judged by Jimmy Little during Reconciliation Week. The competition is open to students in Years 9, 10 and 11, for a song in any style including hip hop, rap, rock, folk or pop. Cash prizes for first, second and third. Entries must contain lyrics. SPIRIT OF BUNDJALUNG ART AWARD
National Parks and Wildlife Service, Northern Rivers Region invites artists to submit an artwork that represents a part of their culture or story for this acquisitive award. First prize $1,250. Categories include open Aboriginal award, youth award and reconciliation award for artworks by Aboriginal and non-indigenous artists working in collaboration. BYRON SHORT STORY WRITING COMPETITION
The Byron Youth Services and Northern Rivers Writers' Centre 2003 Short Story Competition is open to youth living in the Byron Shire and is aimed at providing the opportunity for youth to express themselves through their thoughts on the topic "What's it to you?". YOUNG PEOPLE IN FOCUS ART COMPETITION + EXHIBITION

Queensland Youth Orchestra invites applications for the National Youth Concerto Competition, encouraging the development of exceptional young Australian string players. 2003 WALKOM MANNING ART PRIZE
Walkom Manning Art Prize is an acquisitive prize of $5,000 for a work that will become part of the Greater Taree City Council art collection. This year's theme is Aqua Vitae: Water of Life. HISTORY WEEK 2003

Presented annually by the History Council of New South Wales, History Week is promoted extensively across the state and provides an opportunity for organisations large and small to show the vitality of history in their region. SAMAG INDIGENOUS PROTOCOLS SEMINAR

After much community consultation a range of new Indigenous Protocols has been developed. LOCAL COUNCIL COPYRIGHT ISSUES
The Australian Copyright Council has produced a publication that canvases the copyright issues faced by local councils, including: photocopying and scanning copyright material (including issues such as FOI and the CAL licence); public art; use of music by council (including music on hold); copyright compliance; and the exploitation and control of a council¹s own copyright material.
