CASP FUNDS A RECORD
154 PROJECTS FOR 2003
Regional Arts NSW is delighted to announced grants for a record number
of new arts projects in regional and rural New South Wales under the Country
Arts Support Program (CASP) for 2003. A total of 154 projects will receive
a share of $200,000 in funding devolved from the NSW Ministry for the
Arts, following a doubling of the Government's commitment to the program

CREATIVE VOLUNTEERING
WORKSHOPS STARTING SOON - DON'T MISS OUT!
This is a truly wonderful opportunity for your community organisation
to develop the skills and networks that will ensure your long term success
and growth in these changing times. Creative Volunteering - No Limits!
is the first nationally recognised training program for volunteers in
regional Australia. The course comprises six heavily subsidised one day
workshops on marketing, business planning, working with collections, networking,
funds and resources and planning events. You pay only $25 for each workshop.

NEW BOARD MEMBERS
FOR REGIONAL ARTS NSW
At its recent AGM, Regional Arts NSW welcomed five new Directors to
the Board including an Indigenous representative and representatives from
the Steering Committees of the two new Regional Arts NSW regions. The
new Board Members are:
- Cr Sue Dakin,
representing the Northern Rivers region (formerly the 'Far North Coast')
- Cr Aileen Bell
representing the Central Orana region
- Chris Bonney,
Coordinator of the Norimbah Unit at the NSW Attorney-General's Office
and Indigenous Copyright/Information Officer at Viscopy, co-opted member
- Gary Somers, representing
the Central West region (replacing Ros Kemp)
- Lynne Makin, representing
the Albury Wodonga region (replacing Lisa Mahood).

REGIONAL ARTS
NSW CHAIR ELECTED DEPUTY PRESIDENT OF RAA
In a move which consolidates Regional Arts NSW's commitment to the profile
of regional arts at a national level, the Chair of Regional Arts NSW,
Meg Larkin, has been elected Deputy President of Regional Arts Australia
- the peak national organisation for regional arts and cultural development
in Australia.

AUSTRALIA - THE NATIONAL PICTURE
Over the last 18 months Regional Arts Australia (RAA) has taken on a number
of new national projects in the areas of advocacy and policy development,
research, forums and training. RAA has also been lobbying in Canberra
for an increase in federal funding for Playing Australia and the Regional
Arts Fund over the next twelve months. Read all about it on their excellent

NORTHERN RIVERS
WRITERS' CENTRE MENTORSHIPS
A one-off residential mentorship for four emerging writers aged 18 years
and over who are resident in the Northern Rivers region and working in
the area of fiction, including young adult, popular or genre, or narrative
non-fiction. The mentorship includes a 5 day and 4 night stay at the Byron
Bay Beach Resort with writer Marele Day, providing an opportunity for
four new writers to gain a critical response their draft manuscript. Contact

COMMUNITY HERITAGE
GRANTS 2003
Grants of up to $8,000 are available for preservation projects undertaken
by community organisations which hold documentary heritage collections
of national significance, such as local historical societies, public libraries,
indigenous and ethnic groups. Jointly funded and supported by the National
Library of Australia, National Archives of Australia and the Department
of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts. For a copy of

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
GRANTS FOR MUSEUM VOLUNTEERS
Quick response grants for volunteers in volunteer initiated museums in
NSW who need financial assistance to attend professional or skills development
activities in NSW such as workshops, conferences, seminars, events, or
to travel to another region to spend structured time with other museum
workers. Amounts between $100 to $500 are available and applications are

YOUTH FOR ANTARCTICA
COMPETITION
A national competition to win a trip to Antarctica as SLaM's Youth Sustainability
Ambassador. SLaM (The Spirituality Leadership and Management Network)
will to sponsor a young Australian aged 18-25 on a trip to the Antarctic
in November 2003. The voyage will bring together 40 leaders in an 'Antarctic
Think Tank - 2020 Foresight' to explore and develop strategies for a sustainable
future. The inaugural trip aims to start building an alumnus of people
committed to future action for building a better world. Read all about

NAIDOC ART AWARD
2003
A prominent part of the national NAIDOC celebrations, held 6 - 13 July
2003, to highlight the ongoing survival of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander culture. The award gives young artists the opportunity to display
their work nationally. A $5,000 cash prize is awarded to the painter of

INAUGURAL TARONGA
FOUNDATION POETRY PRIZE
The Taronga Foundation and Poetry Australia Foundation have banded together
to launch this inaugural prize aimed at giving young people the chance
to get creative, get writing and get published. The theme is poetry and
nature. There's a total prize pool of $5,000 in cash prizes plus $10,000
worth of books, zoo passes, certificates and trophies. Poems may be on
any subject. Categories include Junior 12 yrs and under, Intermediate
13-15 years, Seniors 16-18 years and the open Wildlife prize. Website

PLAYWRITE COMPETITION
Naked Theatre Company has launched its 4th annual young playwrights competition,
with entries open to playwrights from across Australia aged between 18-
30 years. Playwrite gives you the chance to have your play transformed
from a script to a full production with the support of some of Australia's
finest advisors and playwrights. Three winners will have their plays produced
at The Old Fitzroy Hotel Theatre, Woolloomooloo NSW and a attend a critique
dinner with playwright David Williamson. Ten finalists will have staged

BRETT WHITELEY
TRAVELLING ART SCHOLARSHIP 2003
The Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of NSW, invites
applications for a major travelling art scholarship. The scholarship is
awarded to a talented young artist with an established body of work, who
is best able to demonstrate the use and benefit of the Scholarship to
further his/her art education in Europe. The scholarship includes $25,000
and a three month residency in Paris. Finalists will be exhibited at the
Brett Whiteley Studio in an exhibition opening on 20 September 2003. Website

CALL FOR ARTISTS
AND WRITERS
Booranga Writers Albury invites expressions of interest from writers and
visual artists living and practising in the border regions of NE Victoria
and Southern NSW to participate in a 'progressive' novel project. This
project is an innovative way, never attempted before in Australia, to
bring the writing and arts communities together. An illustrated novel
is to be written one chapter each in succession by fifteen writers and

ABC's BUSH TELEGRAPH
COUNTRY VIEWPOINT
ABC Radio National's program, Bush Telegraph is looking to hear from people
living in regional or rural parts of Australia aged between 8 - 108 years,
to contribute to the "Country Viewpoint" segment. Involves writing
a 400 word script about anything to do with living in a regional area.
The piece needs to be written the way you speak, so it sounds natural

EARWAX NEW ONLINE
MAGAZINE
EARWAX is a new on line magazine with a focus on Western Australian new
and experimental music, and also includes reviews of Australian CDs, performances,
links, articles an events calendar and an online music work that will
be available only for the duration of each issue, which at this stage
is 2 months. The editors encourage new music artists to review thier favourite
CDs, interview each other, and create music works specifically for on
line streaming and send them in to the editors, who are always looking

LEADERSHIP FOR
DYNAMIC RURAL SCHOOL-COMMUMITY PARTNERSHIPS
A series of case studies into rural school and community partnerships,
undertaken as part of the 'Leadership for rural school-community partnerships
project' by the Centre for Research and Learning in Regional Australia
at the University of Tasmania. A key finding of the research is that leadership
is more about an intervention than any one 'leader' or their traits. The
leadership process is identified an essential ingredient of dynamic school-community
