RUN_WAY
A New Media Arts Board, Young and Emerging Professional Development Initiative.
RUN_WAY is a program designed to extend and enliven young and emerging artists'/artsworkers' experience and understanding of interdisciplinary/new media arts practice. It is also to provide opportunities to travel, learn and develop new skills and/or understanding of interdisciplinary/new media practice. The initiative is specifically for young and emerging artists/artsworkers 30 years of age and under. You can determine and implement a unique professional development scenario, suitable to your own individual needs. RUN_WAY is a flexible program and applicants are encouraged to think of projects that will be beneficial to their practice, no matter how out of the ordinary they may seem.
Grants of up to $5,000 per application are available. Applications will be assessed by the Board in July 2002, as part of the General Assessment Meeting and the proposed activity must occur in 2002/3. INDIGENOUS ARTS FUND
Applications to this fund are assessed at each quarterly meeting of the Indigenous Arts Reference Group (IARG) and should be lodged well before the appropriate closing date. This fund is designed to be an accessible fund for 'out of annual round' and one-off grants of no more than $5000 for projects across a range of artforms. STA TRAVEL TRUST
The STA Travel Trust was developed to assist individuals and community groups to explore the world and make their big ideas come to life. Grants - made as full or partial sponsorship - are awarded in both airfares and cash. Applicants must be Australian or New Zealand residents over 18 years of age. Groups as well as individuals may apply. The only criteria is that you have to have a 'big idea' that is compatible with the STA Travel philosophy of developing peace, tolerance and understanding through travel, learning and experience. Benefit to the community, the quality of the submission and the merit of the idea area also vital.
Assessment is completed by an independent panel, including: radio presenter, John Safran; Triple J presenter, Francis Leach; the Big Issue editor, Simon Castles; founder of MiMCo, Amanda Briskin; and STA Managing Director Sue Smith and staff member Amanda Bunnett. Recipients are expected to provide a detailed report of their experiences and to speak at an STA Travel seminar, as well as be willing to participate in media interviews.
Applications - of a maximum of two pages - should: identify your objectives, present a specific plan or agenda, show that the project is planned around an achievable timetable and budget, be innovative, and be able to demonstrate that the project is directed at a solution. OZCO GRANTS NOW OPEN TO SELF-PUBLISHED AUTHORS
From 2002, self-published authors will be eligible to apply for grants in the New Work·category of the Australia Council Literature Board. Self-published works will be now be accepted as evidence of eligibility if the applicant can provide evidence of distribution and at least one substantial review of work in an established literary journal or general national magazine or newspaper. NSW INDIGENOUS HISTORY FELLOWSHIP ($20, 000)
Offered biennially by the Government to assist a person living in NSW to research and produce a work on a subject of historical interest relating to NSW from an Aboriginal point of view. Applicants must demonstrate that their project will add to, or bring fresh perspectives to their nominated subject. Also demonstrating that the project will benefit their experience and development as an historian, and/or advance scholarly historical writing from an Indigenous perspective in NSW. 2002 INDIGENOUS ARTS FELLOWSHIP ($15,000)
Funded jointly by the NSW Ministry for the Arts and Sydney City Council, Indigenous artists working across all art forms are invited to apply for the 2002 Indigenous Arts Fellowship. Established in 1996 to assist in the development of an Indigenous artist's career in the arts, the Fellowship also provides recognition of the valuable contributions being made by Indigenous artists in NSW. It is expected that the specific project put forward by the applicant will result in artistic work of significant quality and be of lasting benefit to their professional development. Activities may include further study or training, professional research or the undertaking of a particular arts project. VOGEL LITERARY AWARD
The Australian and Vogel Literary Award offers a prize of $20,000 in addition to normal royalties. Submissions must be unpublished manuscripts of fiction, Australian history or biography, of a minimum of 30,000 words and a maximum of 125,000 words. AFI YOUNG CRITICS COMPETITION
The AFI invites all NSW and Victorian senior secondary school students to participate in the AFI Young Critics Competition. Students from years 10-12 are invited to send in an analytical review of 250-500 words on a film of their choice. The review should be written about a fictional feature length film that has been theatrically released (shown commercially in a cinema) or is available on video or DVD. The target audience for the review is the general public. Competition dates are: Victoria 15 April - 28 June; New South Wales - 29 April - 5 July. FREEDMAN FOUNDATION TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP FOR EMERGING ARTISTS.
The Freedman Foundation was established in 1998, and assists young artists, dancers, writers and other aspiring Australian talent to achieve their personal goals. The 2002 scholarship is open to emerging artists aged 30 or under, practising in the areas of sculpture, painting or photography. Up to 4 scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded for overseas educational travel. An exhibition of work by recipients of the inaugural scholarship will be held in late August at the Sir Hermann Black Gallery in Sydney. Contact the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA). OZeCULTURE 2002 - ARTISTS, STUDENTS, SMALL ORGS - EARLY-BIRD RATE EXTENDED!

DEVELOPMENT FORUMS / MENTORSHIPS FOR WRITERS
Varuna, The Writers' House, is offering development forums for works in progress and follow-on mentorships for beginning and emerging writers. Providing the opportunity to 'stress test' projects and ensure firm foundations for their continuation, up to 20 places are available in the forums in the fields of fiction, non-fiction and poetry and up to 10 follow-on mentorships will be available for selected projects. AUSTRALIAN CERAMISTS TO EXHIBIT IN THE WINDY CITY (CHICAGO)
Craft Australia is seeking entries for an exhibition of young and emerging ceramic artists at this year's SOFA (Sculpture, Objects Functional Arts) Fair to be held in Chicago, in October. This major event is organised by Italy International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, with the aim of stimulating research and the renewal of techniques, materials and expressive forms and methods. COMMUNITY DANCE FOR CHANGE - AN ONLINE FORUM
Leading up to Dance Week in May and the Moving on 2002 Conference in Brisbane between 9 and 11 August, The Centre for Popular Education is pleased to present this online forum to canvass questions and explore issues about the role of community dance in empowering and affirming individuals, organisations and communities. It will also provide an opportunity to learn and reflect on the processes used in creating, managing and evaluating community dance. Participants will be able to peruse or contribute to the discussion from 22nd April by accessing The National Cultural Development website at www.ccd.net. Initial commentaries will be posted at intervals of three or four days staring April, 22. Participants can reply to those commentaries or post their own.
Key questions that will be explored include questions about how the goals of community dance are different to the goals of other forms of community art work; the implications for planning and evaluating community dance and how community dance can be effectively used for applied social purposes.
