REPORT HIGHLIGHTS
REGIONAL INEQUALITIES, EMPHASISES ROLE OF CULTURE
The 2002 State of the Regions report by National Economics recommends
a greater focus on regional development and a stronger role for local
government to overcome Australia's growing regional inequality. Commissioned
by the Australian Local Government Association the report provides a comprehensive

prospects for development. It emphasises the key elements in regional
'lifestyle attractiveness' for sustainable development in the new knowledge
economy which are:
* diverse labour markets
* wide lifestyle choice
* a high level of social interaction
* diversity of social attitudes
* a strong regional identity
* authenticity, quality of physical infrastructure and community amenity
all but the first of which are cultural attributes. The full report, a
speech by the Executive Director National Economics and a press release
are available at www.alga.asn.au.
