REGIONAL ARTS FUND
GRANTS FOR 16 MAJOR PROJECTS IN 2004
The Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp has announced sixteen
new NSW regional arts projects to receive funding under the Australian Government's
Regional Arts Fund for 2004. Nearly forty communities across the state will
benefit from funding of $165,052 for an impressive and diverse range of
projects. The Regional Arts Fund is an Australian Government initiative
that aims to support the arts in regional and remote Australia. It is managed
by Regional Arts NSW in this state on behalf of the Government. This year
we received forty applications for funding under the program, requesting

FTO ANNOUNCES
LATEST FUNDING TO EMERGING NSW FILMMAKERS
The New South Wales Film and Television Office today announced grants
of almost $250,000 to support new talent in the state under the Young
Filmmakers Fund, New Feature Film Writers Scheme and the Digital Visual

WINNERS OF PLAY
NOW/ACT NOW ANNOUNCED
Twelve finalist short films were screened at the Chauvel Cinema Paddington
on 21 October at the Play Now/Act Now Awards Ceremony. The entries in
this year's competition, were created by young people aged 18 to 25 years
old from across the state and explored the theme of 'Getting Smashed:
Young people, alcohol and drugs'. In first place, winning $10,000 was
producer, writer and director Ben Briand for his film Leaving. Play Now
Act Now is part of the NSW Government's Youth Alcohol Action Plan 2001-2005
and is proudly funded by NSW Health and coordinated by Metro Screen. (If

Photographer Belinda Webster and sculptor Ole Nielsen will be joining

ALBURY BORDER
AND REGIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WORKSHOPS
8 & 9 November, Albury Wodonga
The Albury Border and Regional Film Festival are providing the chance
to learn the skills involved in short filmmaking. Participants will have
the opportunity to work with professional filmmakers and learn about:
developing ideas, writing a script, storyboarding, sound and lighting,
camera basics and filming and editing. Participants will have the opportunity
to screen their short film at the inaugural Border and Region Film Festival

BIG SCREEN 2003 FILM FESTIVAL

Films to be screened include Harvie Krumpet - featuring animated plasticine
figures, this film won the best short film at the recent Melbourne Film

This conference in hosted by the Australian War Memorial and supported
by the Commonwealth Department of Communication, Information Technology
and the Arts and The Australian National University. In recent years there
has been unprecedented building and redevelopment programs in the museum
and gallery sector. Some have been major greenfields developments, others
have been programs of renewal while the institution continued to operate.
This conference seeks to examine how such projects can be managed effectively,
while delivering quality outcomes within the restraints of budget and

STICKS - CINEMA IN REGIONAL NSW
Saturday 6 December, James Theatre, Dungog
Flicks in the Sticks is a one-day conference organised by the New South
Wales Film and Television Office (FTO) and held twice-yearly in regional
NSW communities. The Dungog program includes presenters Peter Castaldi,
cinema operator from Byron Bay, projectionist Alan Butterfield on technical
requirements and Phil Turner from Community Care Underwriting Agency to
discuss public liability issues. Delegates will also hear how the residents
of Bowraville re-established their community cinema after a 30 year absence,
and find out what's involved in organising a local film festival from
the coordinator of the South East Film Festival. The day concludes with
a free public screening of Martha's New Coat at the James Theatre for

Young People and Transport Project is to investigate transport and travel

The New Media Arts Curatorial Internship aims to provide an emerging curator

The Dept of Environment and Heritage will be giving grants between $250
000 and $10 000 To provide financial assistance to support the conservation
of places of national significance. The Cultural Heritage Projects Program
(CHPP) is an Australian Government initiative supporting projects that
conserve places of significance or identify an Indigenous place (or places)
for conservation planning and listing where appropriate. Projects are
expected to bring benefits to local, regional or state communities, and

Grants of up to $500 are available for the 2nd Round of the 2003/2004
Cultural Arts Assistance Scheme. Applications from community organisations

As part of the Re-Gen Festival 2004 the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery
is sponsoring a scriptwriting competition for short films/ one act plays,

AND SUPPORT EXPENDITURE GRANTS
Clubs NSW's Community Development and Support Expenditure (CDSE) Scheme
is designed to ensure that larger registered clubs in NSW contribute to
the provision of front-line services to their local communities; and to
ensure that the disadvantaged in the community are better positioned to
benefit from the substantial contributions made by those clubs. The Gaming
Machine Tax Act 2001 outlines the legislative arrangements for the granting
of a rebate of gaming machine tax levied on registered clubs. The Act
authorises the Minister to publish guidelines that determine what constitutes
the application of profits for CDSE purposes. This document contains the

TOWNS PROGRAM GRANTS
The Department of State and Regional Development is providing grants to
assist in the community planning process, implementation of strategic
plans and skills enhancement. The overarching vision of the Main Street/Small
Towns Program (MS/STP) is to revitalize regional communities. Among other
goals, the program aims to assist communities and businesses to develop
a vision for their future and implement a practical community economic
development plan by harnessing local and regional resources to enhance
their unique strengths and quality of life and invigorate the local business
environment by exploring opportunities for new economic activity and creating
an environment conducive to business and economic growth and sustainability.

These NSW Heritage Office grants are designed for year round consideration
of urgent environmental heritage projects. Funding of up to $5,000 is
available for projects requiring immediate assistance outside the biennial
funding cycle. Applicants must provide convincing evidence of urgency
