MAJOR NEW MULTIMEDIA SHOW BY 50 YOUNG PEOPLE TO BE LAUNCHED THIS FRIDAY
5 March, Moree
Special Minister of State, the Hon John Della Bosca, will launch the NSW Drugs Misuse Prevention Strategy in Moree this Friday. The event will feature a new multimedia performance work entitled 'Handle With Care' which was produced by fifty young and 'at risk' people from local communities from over 40 hours of film and 100 recorded songs. The Drugs Misuse Prevention Strategy is funded by the State Government through the Police Minister's Confiscated Proceeds Fund and is delivered in partnership by BIG hART and Arts North West. It employs artists to work with hundreds of disadvantaged young people on arts based projects right across the north of NSW. Following its launch, the project will continue for the next three years. There will be a showcase in Sydney later this year and a regional tour of all participating communities. NATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION - SEMI FINALS MOVE TO SYDNEY

The semi-finals for Australia's only national violin competition, held annually in Kendall on the NSW north coast, will be held in Sydney this year for the first time. The move, which is the result of a partnership with the Historic Houses Trust of NSW, will allow Sydney-siders to hear the fifteen competitors from around the nation perform in the Ballroom of Government House before the Finals take place on 4 April in Kendall. JINDABYNE SCULPTURE BY THE LAKE - $13,500 PRIZE POOL + EASTER EXHIBITION
The foreshore of beautiful Lake Jindabyne will be the site for a major outdoor sculpture exhibition this Easter. Opening on 9 April, the 2004 Jindabyne Sculpture By The Lake will see up to 40 artworks installed along the lakside walking trail. Sculpture By The Lake, which is an initiative of the Snowy River Shire, invites entries from around Australia for a prize pool which includes a $10,000 commission, a $2,000 Major Prize and a $1,000 Encouragement Award plus a solo exhibition at Raglan Gallery, Cooma, in 2005. This year, a Youth Award will also be offered for the first time, providing $500 and a training opportunity for an artist under the age of 18. FLING PHYSICAL THEATRE - FIRST FUNDED DANCE COMPANY IN REGIONAL NSW?
With the recent announcement of a three year funding commitment from the NSW Ministry for the Arts, FLING Physical Theatre may have become the first funded dance company in regional NSW. Initiated by choreographer Lee Pemberton, FLING is a youth dance ensemble that has already undertaken a number of peformance and training projects.

In 2003 the company presented a successful sell-out season for an original new work, Struggle, performed by twenty five young people following a residency with two members of Legs On The Wall, Rowan Marchingo and Ingrid Kleining. FLING's 2004 program is based around two guest residencies, the first of which being Tess De Quincey's ten day residential training intensive, Tathra Bodyweather (see below) which will culminate in FLING's first performance season, A Dictionary of Habitats, scheduled for July. NEW DIRECTOR, ARTS DEVELOPMENT - NSW MINISTRY FOR THE ARTS
Alan Pigott is the new Director of Arts Development at the NSW Ministry for the Arts. Alan comes from the Museum of Contemporary Art where he was General Manager for the past four years. He has also held senior management positions at Rail Access Corporation; Warringah Council and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Alan has also been a senior consultant with the Premier's Department of NSW, working on the Public Sector Reform Agenda, with a particular emphasis on rural policy and the implementation of new models of service provision in regional areas.

Alan is a Graduate of the Queensland University of Technology and holds a Law Degree and a Bachelor of Business with a major in Public Sector Management.

NEW INDIGENOUS CULTURAL OFFICER - NSW MINISTRY FOR THE ARTS
Garry Jones has been appointed as the new Indigenous Cultural Development Officer at the NSW Ministry for the Arts. The aim of the new position is to provide greater policy and strategic capacity in the broad arena of Indigenous arts and cultural development in NSW and to develop partnerships across government and with community.

Garry has an honours degree in Visual Arts from the Canberra School of Art and a BSc (Honours) in Architecture from the UNSW. In 2003 he was awarded a Fullbright Postgraduate Fellowship to research the politics of identity in contemporary Native American visual arts. Garry also has a strong exhibition record with works shown at the Powerhouse Museum, the NSW State Library, Old Parliament House Canberra, the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory and the Casula Powerhouse, and he has curated work at Blacktown Arts Centre and Wollongong City Gallery. In 2000, he won Art of Place, the National Indigenous Art Award, in the Works on Paper category.

NEW PROJECTS AND PUBLICITY OFFICER FOR ORANA ARTS
Arts and culture in the Central Orana will soon be enjoying a higher profile thanks to Orana Arts' newly appointed Projects and Publicity Officer, Kim Goldsmith. Kim will be working to promote the arts both within the region and beyond; to provide media training and advice to community arts organisations; and working closely to assist communities to identify and meet their cultural needs. SOUTH EAST ARTS REGION EXPANDS OPERATIONS
The South East Arts Region (SEAR) is expanding operations with the recent appointment of Jo Wright as Project Officer, to be based in a new office in the Snowy Monaro. Jo was first involved with SEAR last year as a mentor for the South East Film Festival and has been assisting with the SEAR Map project. [More]

SYDNEY WRITERS' FESTIVAL

CCD ONLINE DIPLOMA 2004
Community Cultural Development NSW (CCD NSW) is now accepting enrolments for the fully accredited Online Diploma in CCD. This new course provides participants with the competencies needed to work in CCD at a project and program management level. In particular it is designed for arts workers, organisers and artists, as well as people working in fields allied to community cultural development, environment, health, youth work, arts organisations, Aboriginal organisations and migrant organisations. This year the Diploma will run from March 20 to October 31 and five modules are offered:
- Identifying needs in CCD
- Obtaining funding for CCD projects
- Marketing and promotion of CCD
- Working with groups in a community network
- Managing a CCD project

REGIONAL COMMUNITY ARTS FACILITIES FORUM
2 March, Bathurst

Last October, Bathurst City Council held a Cultural Planning summit/workshop to review the City's cultural plan and develop cultural networks in the city. Many community groups were present and gave a high priority to the development by the City of regional community arts facilities. The Council is holding another forum to follow up on this summit on 2 March, to look at how best to address community arts facilities and to prioritise their importance. All individuals and representatives of organisations with an interest in the cultural life and facilities of the City of Bathurst are invited to attend. CULTURAL AWARENESS TRAINING

This training is an initiative of the Regional Migrant Worker Project and is funded by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs and auspiced by Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services Inc. The objective is to enhance and improve the skills of Mid North Coast community workers in the area of cultural awareness, recognising that staff roles vary across the welfare sector with an expectation of diversity and flexibility in client work. The Mid North Coast has a small amount of clients from cultural and linguistically diverse backgrounds, but it is essential that work practices in the region accommodate their needs and requirements for purposes of access and equity. FINDING THE WRITE STUFF: INSPIRING STORYTELLING IN THE MUSEUM

Presented by the Museums and Galleries Foundation, and in partnership with Outback Arts, this workshop brings together writers, storytellers and those who document community heritage to explore approaches such as significance assessment for researching and presenting enlivening stories in museums. An open exploration and re-examination of the body, Bodyweather draws on elements of both Eastern and Western dance, sports training, martial arts, and theatre practice. Bodyweather was founded by Butoh dancer Min Tanaka and his Mai-Juku Performance Company in Japan. As a former member of the company, workshop leader Tess de Quincey proposes Bodyweather as a broad based and comprehensive training system that can be used as pure body/mind research or as professional dance performance training. WAGGA WAGGA WRITERS’ WRITERS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Expressions of interest are now open for regionally-based writers to take part in this program with visiting fellowship writers as mentors. Priority will be given to mentorees writing within the genre of novels. Successful applicants will work with the fellowship writers gaining access to professional advice and skills, and will be given public performance opportunities. A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY
Theatre artists are invited to take advantage of A Month in the Country, a new national creative development lab for theatre artists in the border town of Albury Wodonga. Funded through the NSW Ministry for the Arts, Arts Victoria and AlburyCity and operated by HotHouse Theatre, A Month in the Country is a national arts resource to facilitate the creation of new Australian performing arts work. The initiative involves an on-going residential program that would bring creative teams of writers, actors, directors, designers and other performing artists from across the country to Albury Wodonga during the creative development stage of a myriad of different projects. While similar centres exist for visual artists and writers, there are currently no such centres for the development of theatre. Groups of artists from around the country will be supported to live and work in a large farmhouse just outside of Albury for periods of one to five weeks. 2006 COMMONWEALTH GAMES PUBLIC ART PROGRAM - EOIS
As the biggest event Victoria has ever staged, the 2006 Commonwealth Games will create positive legacies for the State's economy, environment and community. One of these legacies is a pedestrian bridge from Birrarung Marr to the MCG, linking some of Melbourne's biggest cultural and sporting venues. Major Projects Victoria invites expressions of interest from experienced, qualified artists to help fill the canvas that this important icon will provide. The commissioned artworks would express the spirit of the Games and the values of the contemporary Commonwealth of Nations, framed against our own history and cultural identity. These artworks will be integrated into the design of the pedestrian bridge itself, as well as its immediate surrounds. NORMAN LINDSAY FESTIVAL OF CHILDREN'S LITERATURE
20 - 21 March, Blue Mountains

Organised by the National Trust NSW, the 4th annual Norman Lindsay Festival of Children's Literature is a chance for budding children's writers, illustrators, parents, teachers, librarians and children to meet their favourite authors and illustrators in person. Held at the former home of the prolific artist/writer Norman Lindsay in Springwood in the lower Blue Mountains, the popular two-day event brings together an eclectic array of award-winning Australian authors, illustrators, storytellers and publishers who hold workshops for both adults and children. Topics include learning how to write or illustrate successful children's books, creative storytelling and practical information such as finding a publisher. Children's workshops encourage youngsters to have a go at writing their own stories. There is also an annual festival short story competition for kids aged 8-12. THE RED ROOM COMPANY SEEKS NEW POETS
The Red Room Company creates, produces and distributes poetry with a focus on providing opportunities for young, new and emerging poets, including collaborations with established writers and artists. Red Room uses alternatives to traditional poetry production such as radio, the internet, and events to challenge the everyday with language. Through audio projects and online distribution they are able to reach urban, rural and regional audiences. Young Indigenous artist and 2000 Blake Prize winner Frances Belle Parker will be leading a series of workshops for young artists of the Lower Clarence at Maclean High School. A banner will be created to lead a Youth Week parade with youth of the Maclean area on March 27 and will later be returned to Maclean to be displayed. 12-25 year-olds are needed to assist in designing and painting the banner. WORKSHOP FACILITATORS - CROC FESTIVAL
The Croc Festivals has been running since 1998. Combining youth culture through the performing arts, careers, health and sport clinics, they provide a unique opportunity to promote a 100% drug & alcohol free lifestyle to indigenous and non-indigenous students in rural and remote communities. The organisers are looking for artists interested in working with students from rural and remote communities. This is an opportunity to create a dance, music, performing art or visual art workshop for students of either primary or secondary ages (or both). Each festival takes place over 2-3 days. In 2004 there will be seven Croc Festivals across Australia:

- Katherine 3 - 5 August
- Derby 10 - 12 August
- Kalgoorlie 24 - 26 August
- Port Augusta 31 August - 2 September
- Swan Hill 14 - 16 September and

Assistance for new writers to fully develop a significant, creative vision for their scripts. FOUNDATION FOR YOUNG AUSTRALIANS YOUTH PARTNERSHIP GRANTS
A new way of supporting groups of young people and organisations based on developing youth-led initiatives together, utilising the shared resources and expertise of both the applicant and the Foundation. The aim is to work together to develop and implement a creative idea that results in meaningful change with young people aged 12 to 25 years of age. Organisations working with young people aged 12 to 25 can apply. A small number (around eight) will be selected to work in partnership with the Foundation in Stage One to develop a youth-led proposal for funding to address an identified opportunity. The Foundation will make a financial contribution to develop these proposals. YOUTH LED FUTURES - PARTNERSHIP GRANTS WITH INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES
Grants of between $10,000 - $15,000 for the development and implementation of innovative initiatives to address issues of importance to Indigenous young people and their communities. The aim is to work together to develop and implement a creative idea that results in meaningful change with young people aged 12 - 25 years. Youth Led Futures grants are made in two stages. In the first stage, a small number of partners are selected and funded to identify a priority issue for young people and create an initiative proposal for funding over a number of years. CAMDEN HEAD PILOT STATION RESIDENCY 2004/2005

JINDABYNE SCULPTURE BY THE LAKE - $10,000 PRIZE & EXHIBITION
Entries are invited from around Australia for this major outdoor sculpture prize and exhibition to be staged over Easter this year in Jindabyne. The prize pool includes a $10,000 commission, a $2,000 Major Prize and a $1,000 Encouragement Award + solo exhibition at Raglan Gallery, Cooma, in 2005. This year, a Youth Award will also be offered for the first time, providing $500 and a training opportunity for an artist under the age of 18. For the first time in 2004 the Community Cultural Development (CCD) Board of the Australia Council will be offering the Community Cultural Development Partners Award. The award has been created to recognise the significant contribution of partnerships in the community and acknowledge best practice in collaborative planning and implementation in projects or programs. The Partners Award of $15,000 is to specifically assist the recipient organisation document and present the partnership project(s) for which it is being recognised. The Partners Award will be open to organisations, institutions, corporations, government and non-government agencies that have been instrumental in partnering with communities and artsworkers through a developmental and creative process. THE COUNTRY ENERGY ART PRIZE FOR LANDSCAPE PAINTING - $35,000
Australia's richest annual landscape art prize - offering the equivalent in prize money to the esteemed Archibald Art Prize ($35,000) - is now in its second year. The prize aims to celebrate the Australian lifestyle and the natural beauty of the country. The event is a partnership between the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) and Country Energy, which seeks to highlight and reward the wealth of talent amongst artists across country and coastal NSW. It is also designed to encourage and support artists outside metropolitan areas and contribute to the development of the State's visual arts industry as a whole. Each year, an exhibition of the finalists' artworks will be on show at a different regional art gallery, throwing the spotlight on NSW's regional art scene and featuring landscapes from around the state.
