NEW SEDITION LAW WILL STIFLE ARTISTS, SAYS NAVA
The National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA) and Australia Lawyers for Human Rights (ALHR) have today called for changes to the Federal Government's proposed Anti-Terrorism Bill, saying the new offences under the heading of sedition may severely constrain the freedom of expression of visual artists. "We are concerned that the new sedition laws inhibit artists' entitlement to exercise their human right to represent, discuss and critique ideas, through their artwork or other forms of public or private expression," Tamara Winikoff, Executive Director of NAVA said. "As with all Australian citizens, they should remain free to continue to challenge current orthodoxies - artistic or political." Regional Arts NSW supports and endorses NAVA's position, and adds its voice to the call that the government amend the anti–terrorism laws to protect freedom of artistic and cultural expression. Read the full media release and find out more about the proposed legislation at www.visualarts.net.au

Available to Tour

Fast Cars & Tractor EnginesFAST CARS & TRACTOR ENGINES
Available August to November, 2006

An Urban Theatre Projects production toured by Performing Lines. F
ast Cars & Tractor Engines interweaves eight stories of fighting, courage and survival, as ordinary people share extraordinary stories about the fight of their life. It’s theatre without paper, using a unique performance technique: three performers listen to recorded interviews through headphones, and speak along to the soundtrack. The tension is further heightened by deliberate casting against type: we hear the story of a Vietnamese refugee from the mouth of a young Lebanese man, the cry for Jihad from an Italian woman and the words of a giggly African girl from an Asian man. Real people who wouldn’t ordinarily converse are placed side by side at the kitchen table.
“This is local narrative that transcends geography, presenting the universality of human experience and slapping down the lie of unbridgeable cultural separation…It’s great fun, and deeply thoughtful.” (SMH)
