Highlights

Rodeo Nights by Rick Carter'MORE THAN A POEM' PHOTOS BY RICK CARTER
Until 23 October, Gunnedah
Capturing the ordinary and extraordinary people at the core of country life, 'More than a Poem' is a photo essay on Rick Carter's childhood home of Gunnedah in the North West, the area which inspired Australia's most quoted and best loved poem, 'My Country' by Dorethea Mackellar. The show reveals a Gunnedah which is much 'more' than the beautiful landscape of the poem. 'More than a Poem' captures the breath, spirit and sense of humour of the people of Gunnedah and shows a community in the truest sense, where people you bump into call you by name. At The Creative Arts Gallery, Chandos Street, Gunnedah Tel 02 6740 2271 Website www.ifblackwaswhite.com.

'SKATE' BY DEBRA OSWALD
8 - 15 October, Sydney via Deniliquin

Photo by Giselle HaberFull of the emotional awkwardness, adrenalin and humour of adolescence, Debra Oswald’s turbo-charged play was inspired by the people and stories of Deniliquin in South West NSW. After countless knock backs from the local council and community groups, plans for a skate park in Narragindi are dead in the water. Skate is a moving account of the struggles of a group of teenagers - accurately nailing their world of decks, runs and tricks, with live skateboarding on stage. When tragedy strikes, the whole town is forced to deal with what is important in life. ATYP Studio, Hickson Road, Walsh Bay Tel 02 9251 3900 Website www.atyp.com.au

'The Diva' - Image courtesy Melissa Delaneysoftcore #598438830000-22 BY MELISSA DELANEY
Until 14 October, Wagga Wagga

A video piece of excruciating observation - a number of subjects and their consumption of a large block of Lindt blue chocolate. Melissa Delaney's work forms a fragment of the softcore series which uses text/photography/video/sound/installation to investigate and explore the connection between people involved in the sharing of desire - flesh/exchange/love/desire/pornography/female/male. The series touches on objectification of human connection that exists in intimate human exchange. At the HR Gallop Gallery, Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga.

THE 71ST JACARANDANA FESTIVAL 2005
'Dame Edna Everage', one of the wild and varied floats at the Festival, from the Festival website, courtesy Clarence Valley Tourism.28 October - 6 November, Grafton

Inspired by the magnificent spectacle of the hundreds of lilac-blossomed trees which grow in Grafton's broad tree lined avenues, the world-renowned Jacaranda Festival is Australia's oldest folk festival, inaugurated in 1935. Featuring a Grant Float Procession, the Crowning of the Jacaranda Queen, the Jacaranda Talent Quest, Jacaranda Children's Party, Jacaranda Dragon Boat Racing, a raft of exhibitions and sporting events and much, much more, the Jacaranda Festival is one of New South Wales' most unique - and beautiful! - regional festivals.
"So was born a tradition of yearly festivity, when the trees shall bloom again - when song, dance and gaiety shall reveal the Australian capacity of real comradeship in 'Jacaranda Time in Grafton'."

This year's competition attracted more than 470 entries - from Tweed Heads to Albury and west to Broken Hill. The winner of the Employee's Choice Award, selected by Country Energy's 3,300 strong workforce, was Broken Hill artist Clark Barrett, for his painting I Remember When the River Ran. ON THURSDAY PLANTATION'S TENTH ANNIVERSARY: A SHOW OF WINNERS
Berjot with some of the seven figures that make up his winning work, 'Echo'A startling collection of life-size female figures clad in traditional Muslim chador took the major prize at the 10th Anniversary Thursday Plantation East Coast Sculpture Show announced in September. The work, entitled Echo, is by Gold Coast artist Frédéric Berjot, who describes it as both a political and poetic statement. Berjot says it was his French upbringing, which brought him close to Muslim communities, that prompted him to make a work challenging "them-and-us" attitudes in Australia. Eminent Australian sculptor Bert Flugelman, a member of the judging panel, praised the Thursday Plantation show, now in its tenth year, for encouraging the development and appreciation of outdoor art in Australia. "It is extremely important for sculptors to have somewhere to show and to spark off each other, and it also does a great deal for the general community," he said. Forty four new works feature in this year's exhibition at The Thursday Plantation, Pacific Highway, Ballina until 2006. Tel 02 6686 7273 Email sculpture@tphealth.com Website www.sculptureshow.net.

22 October, Canberra

After sell-out seasons at the Sydney Big Laugh and Adelaide Cabaret festivals, the team behind the ABC TV series CNNNN and The Chaser Decides is embarking on its first national tour. Titled Cirque du Chaser, the show delivers political satire in the form of stand up, sketch, live music, and video, as the dual-Logie award winning team returns to their roots and gets back to what theatre is really about: abusing arts grants. "The show actually has nothing to do with Cirque du Soleil", said Julian Morrow. "We certainly won't be doing amazing acrobatics or have high production values. But it will be incredibly pretentious and ridiculously over-priced, so there's a link there I guess."
