A showcase of multi media artworks by disadvantaged young people produced in various BIGhART community projects around Australia over the past 7 years. Deeply personal stories, vignettes and dramatisations which all have a common theme - that seeking help and speaking about difficult life experiences can help you to find that you are not alone. Includes HURT, a 5 screen installation; excepts from the knot at home 8 part SBS TV series to be screened in 2006; Handle With Care video presentation and Addictions, a series of 5 minute radio pieces. ARTSTART NSW YOUTH ARTS & SKILLS FESTIVAL
17 September - 3 October, Sydney & Statewide
The NSW TAFE funded youth arts and skills festival - ArtStart - kicks off on 17 September with an showcase featuring circus feats, street funk, Aboriginal dance, urban groove, hip hop, reggae and rock. There's also an exhibition of works by emerging photographers, filmmakers, sculptors and multi-media artists. ArtStart provides mentoring for young people from diverse comunities to work alongside professional artists and performers and it is coordinated in 22 areas across NSW. Regional highlights at the launch include:

THE BELLINGEN GLOBAL CARNIVAL
30 September - 2 October, Bellingen
Bellingen's annual multicultural and multi-arts festival blends traditional, classical, contemporary and electronic concerts and promises its audience an intimate encounter with the performers and their art form. There are workshops for the public as well as outdoor physical theatre; art, craft and photography exhibitions; a forum to look at social issues plus a children's festival with professional child minding and crèche facilities. The Carnival has a focus on contemporary electronic music, which draws from different cultures and is a fusion that juxtaposes the new with the more traditional. BOB DEBUS NEW MINISTER FOR THE ARTS
The NSW Premier, Mr Morris Iemma, has appointed the Attorney-General and Minister for the Environment, Mr Bob Debus, as Minister for the Arts in addition to his other areas of responsibility. Mr Debus has been affiliated with state arts leadership for nearly a decade, having served as Minister Assisting the Minister for the Arts from 1995 to 1999, then Minister Assisting the Premier on the Arts from April 1999 to March 2003. ABC TV TO LAUNCH NEW ARTS SHOW
The ABC will launch a new half-hour prime time arts and culture show called Vulture on Tuesday 27 September at 10pm. Vulture will be hosted by former Doug Anthony Allstars troupe member, Richard Fidler, who will lead an alternating panel of 4 people each week discussing the issues and ideas shaping our cultural landscape. Top names are already promised for the show's line-up, and Executive Producer, Guy Rundle says to expect a show which is "opinionated, with passionate people thrashing out the cultural debates that we live by, carving up the sacred cows, putting out the fat cats, not believing the hype, and playing doctor with the spin,' he says. FINALISTS SELECTED FOR PARLIAMENT OF NSW INDIGENOUS ART PRIZE
5 - 9 September, Sydney
Works by 53 Aboriginal artists from across NSW have been selected as finalists for the inaugural Parliament of NSW Indigenous Art Prize which was established by the Parliament of NSW to promote the unique Indigenous cultures of NSW. With an award of $20,000, the Prize is expected to become one of the most prestigious in Australia. The 53 finalists hail from right across the State - from Wilcannia and Lightning Ridge, to Moree and Boggabilla, Tamworth and Armidale, Kempsey and Maclean, the Central Coast, Sydney, Queanbeyan and the South Coast. Finallists' works will be exhibited in the Fountain Court at Parliament House from 5 - 29 September and the winner will be announced on 14 September. The Outback - by Annaliese PorterMAGABALA PUBLISHES BOOK BY 11 YEAR OLD AUTHOR
Magabala Books has just published a book by 11 year old Annaliese Porter which captures the Australian outback in a moving bush ballad about the country's vast interior. Porter's original version of The Outback won a poetry prize at the Gunnedah Eisteddfod in 2003, leading to an invitation to perform her works at the Sydney Writer's Festival. The Outback also features illustrations from one of Australia's most celebrated artists, Bronwyn Bancroft, whose work is held in collections throughout the world and who has contributed to some 21 books. COUNTRY ENERGY ART PRIZE FINALISTS ANNOUNCED
14 September - 16 October, Grafton
42 artists from across the State will vie for honours in this years $35,000 Country Energy Art Prize for Landscape Painting. Chosen from more 470 entries, the finalists now await the judging of Australia's richest annual landscape competition on 14 September. There were almost 100 more entries received in this year's competition, including 15 artists who are second-time finalists and two artists who have reached the final stages of the competition since its inception three years ago. This year's overall winner will be announced by Sydney artist ultimate judge Susanne Archer at Grafton Regional Gallery on 14 September and an exhibition of the 42 finalists' artworks will continue to 16 October. FROM HAY TO THE HARBOUR: OUTBACK THEATRE PERFORMS IN SYDNEY
Outback Theatre's production of young Hay playwright Steph Williams' play Rewind was such a success at the Young Dramatists - Page to Stage Festival in Wagga Wagga last month that it has been selected to be performed in Sydney. Rewind, a black comedy about a teenage girl struggling to cope with the chaos of school, work, sport, parents and friends, features an outstanding cast of young people from Hay who will perform alongside their Sydney counterparts at the Young Dramatists - Page to Stage Festival at the Ensemble Theatre, Kirribilli, on 11 and 12 September. Rewind will also be published by Currency Press in an anthology of short plays by high school students.

RAV AND HORSHAM COUNCIL WIN ABAF AWARD FOR MEETING PLACE
The partnership between Regional Arts Victoria and the Horsham Rural City Council for Meeting Place, The 2004 Regional Arts Australia National Conference, has won the Toyota Community Award in the Australian Business Arts Foundation's (AbaF) annual awards.

REWIND AT BISHOP'S LODGE

The cast of Rewind hosts an evening of fun and frivolity to help raise funds to perform in Sydney. The evening will commence with music and nibbles followed by an introduction to cast members Ashleigh Stokes, Tammie Mayer, Chris Sewell, Courtney Nisbet, Peter Seaman and Sam Murray. THE PROSPECTORS BY ALANA VALENTINE

Orana Arts is working closely with local presenter groups across the region to assist in the presentation of a Monkey Baa Theatre production, The Prospectors by Alana Valentine. Set in the mid-19th Century, the play is about life on the goldfields during the Eureka Stockade. Aimed at young people from 8 to 12 years, the story tracks the relationship of two miners, one an experienced American, the other an Australian prospector. SHADES OF BLUE - MAUREEN O'BRIEN

Singer-songwriter, Maureen O'Brien will introduce her music to the Illawarra following the launch of her latest CD, Many Shades of Blue. The album is an eclectic mix of songs that cross a range of music genres including blues, jazz, contemporary folk and a good dash of comedy. Maureen will be accompanied by Gregg Telian & Happy Feet, one of the finest bands in the Hunter Region. The Berry concert will include an opening set by local musician, Nick Rheinberger.

New York based writer Kate Jennings will be visiting her childhood home of Colleambally in September and giving a reading in Wagga Wagga. Jennings' novels have been well-received, with Snake (1996) reported to have just missed the Booker shortlist, and Moral Hazard (2002) shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Award. Jennings is also the author of Women Falling Down in the Street (1990), a collection of short stories, and a book of poetry Cats, Dogs and Pitchforks (1993), and she edited the groundbreaking anthology of women's writing, Come to Me My Melancholy Baby (1975). 11th ANNUAL WAGGA WAGGA JAZZ FESTIVAL

Since blowing its first note in the mid nineties, the Wagga Wagga Jazz Festival has grown into one of Australia's premier regional jazz festivals. 80 bands have been programmed to play in 9 venues across
the 3 day festival with a total of 530 musicians involved. THE 2005 RODNEY SEABORN PLAYWRIGHTS' AWARD
The Seaborn Broughton & Walford Foundation offers an annual Playwrights' Award of $10,000 for the development of a script or project proposal in theatre. The purpose of the award is to encourage and support the development of material which, in dealing with the individual, family, social or environmental issues, conveys an awareness or message of faith, hope and love. It does not have to be religious. It is hoped that the award could provide counterbalance to the negative or less salutary aspects of life so often focused on in contemporary theatre. LOWER CLARENCE ARTS & CRAFTS 40TH ANNUAL OPEN COMPETITIVE EXHIBITION

ANL MARITIME ART PRIZE
Winner 2004 People's Prize: Herman Pekel's 'Docklands Scene' The Mission to Seafarers Victoria's National Maritime Art Prize aims to promote and recognize excellence in Maritime and Seafaring subjects. The theme is 'The Mariners' craft - the relationship between humankind and the sea'. The Prize is an acquisitive award of $15,000 and is proudly sponsored by ANL Container Line. PORT MACQUARIE AIRPORT PUBLIC ARTS DESIGN COMPETITION
As part of the airport's security upgrade, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council is running a design competition to produce design drawings for a public artist to transform into a 3 dimensional sculptural installation filling two 1500mm diameter concrete circles outside the airport departure lounge. The site is an opportunity to welcome back visitors and to thank them for their stay. All designs need to show that the envisaged sculpture is rooted in researching the airport's users, heritage and aspirations. Artists and designers can submit outline designs for the $500 competition or respond to a public arts brief outlining production costs and schedule for up to $10,000. ABC FICTION AWARD
The ABC Fiction Award is a nationwide competition held by ABC Books with the support of ABC Local Radio. The competition seeks the best, original, unpublished, quality fiction manuscript by an Australian resident over the age of 18. The submitted manuscript cannot be under consideration by any other publisher or award. This award has been set up to recognise emerging Australian writers, and young writers are encouraged to enter. The winner will receive a $10,000 advance and have their book published through ABC Books. The winning entry will be broadcast on ABC Local Radio and will be available as an audio book. THE ALICE PRIZE
The Alice Prize is a national contemporary art award, first held in 1970. It is administered by the Alice Springs Art Foundation, a community-based voluntary organisation, and is an invitational exhibition, with pre-selection open to any artist working in Australia. The award is $15,000 (acquisitive) plus a 4-week residency in Alice Springs with airfares and accommodation. In addition, a $,1000 Tammy Kingsley Award is decided by popular vote. FOURTH PILLAR CONFERENCE REPORT
The Cultural Development Network of Victoria has published a comprehensive report of its 2004 Conference, 'The Fourth Pillar of Sustainability:culture, engagement and sustainable communities'. The conference attracted a range of presenters in its exploration of cultural development at a local government level. A range of ideas were canvassed around the four pillar model of public planning; the idea of considering 'cultural' factors along with economic, environmental and social in planning for sustainability. EXHIBITIONISTS: ARTISTS' TRADE SECRETS

HAVING OUR VOICES HEARD: ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER YOUTH PERSPECTIVES
A report which presents the results of a national survey conducted by the members of the National Indigenous Youth Leadership Group 2004/2005, comprising 15 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged from 18 to 24 from diverse communities across Australia. The survey sought to identify the issues important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people in Australia as well as possible solutions to these issues. RAILWAY STREET THEATRE COMPANY'S PRODIGAL
An Australian musical, Prodigal is a contemporary retelling of the parable of the young man who takes his portion of the family estate, travels to a distant country, squanders it on loose living, then meekly returns to the fold a chastened and humble soul. The prodigal son of this musical has a different burden: he is gay, and leaving the family for university and the bright lights of inner-city Sydney is the necessary first step in his journey to self-acceptance. Prodigal received a Green Room Award for Best Original Lyrics and Music in 2000. It has been performed at Chapel on Chapel and at the York theatre, New York in 2002. RAILWAY STREET THEATRE COMPANY'S WEATHER
The premiere of a new Australian play by Gary Baxter which was nominated for the Patrick White Award 2004. Weather explores the relationship between an older couple who have been together for over 50 years. The play jumps back and forward in time, looking at the relationship in the early years, through childbirth and the raising of children to the present day when the older man is placed into a nursing home.
