ARTIST PRO HART HAS DIED
One of Australia's most popular artists, the people's painter and brushman of the bush, Pro Hart, has died at his Broken Hill home, aged 77, after a battle with motor neurone disease. A prolific painter as well as a sculptor, Pro Hart's first exhibition sold out after he was discovered by a gallery director in Adelaide in 1960 and he went on to exhibit all over the world. In 1976 he was awarded an MBE for his services to art in Australia and in 1982 received an Honorary Life Membership of Society International Artistique for outstanding artistic achievement, but he was never embraced by the Australian art establishment. Neither the National Gallery of Australia nor the Art Gallery of NSW has ever bought one of his works. A former miner with a strong stubborn streak, Pro Hart was loved by Australians, not just for his iconic images of the outback and bush life, but also for his larrikin persona and great generosity. And he was a Broken Hill man to the end. Hart will be buried in the municipal cemetery in Tuesday, after the first state funeral ever to be held outside Sydney, at the Broken Hill Entertainment Centre (none of the city's churches is big enough).

SEDITION LAW REVIEW
The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has launched the promised inquiry into the controversial sedition laws introduced by the Federal Government as part of the 'anti-terrorim' legislation last year, but already there are concerns the formal terms of the reference provided the Attorney-General, Philip Ruddock, do not go far enough. The Federal Secretary of the Media, Entertainment & Arts Alliance (MEAA), Chris Warren, in an online blog, says the review will not address the most important question raised by the sedition laws: do the amendments unacceptably restrict freedom of speech in Australia? More information online. MEAA www.alliance.org.au ALRC www.alrc.gov.au/inquiries/current/sedition/index.htm

ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHTS BILL INTRODUCED
A private member's bill on resale royalties for artists was introduced into Federal Parliament by Labor MP Bob McMullan on 27 March. The Artist’s Resale Rights Bill 2006 recommends that Australia adopt a resale royalty scheme that allows its visual artists to earn a royalty each time their work is resold - similar to writers and composers. The introduction of resale royalties was a key recommendation in the 2002 Myer Inquiry into the Contemporary Visual Arts and Craft Sector and will be of particular benefit to Indigenous artists. The bill has been applauded by the peak body representing the interests of the Australian visual arts and craft sector, the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA), which is strongly supporting the push to introduce legislation similar to that already in place overseas.

NATIONAL ENQUIRY INTO RURAL & REGIONAL WOMEN'S REPRESENTATION
The Federal Minister for Transport and Regional Services, Warren Truss, has used the occasiona of International Women's Day to announce an enquiry into the role of rural and regional women in decision-making bodies in Australia. The enquiry, to be chaired by Senator Judith Toeth, will set out to identify practical strategies to encourage both government and the private sector to more fully utilise the skills and knowledge of talented women in regional Australia. "International Women's Day is a good time to congratulate rural and regional women on their considerable contribution to regional Australia, " Mr Truss said. "Women run businesses and farms and significantly strengthen the economies of regional and rural communities." Submission to the enquiry are invited until 21 April and the panel is expected to make its final report in June. Website www.dotars.gov.au.

SATIRE WINS THE BALD ARCHY
A satirical painting of John Olsen is the winner of this year's Bald Archy Prize. The winning portrait is a satire on Olsen's 2005 Archibald-winning painting, Self Portrait Janus Faced. Matt Adams, 29, of the Central Coast, won the faux-prestigious award with his portrait Brown Stain Janus Faced, showing Olsen standing pants-less holding soiled underwear. The painting is a satirical take on last year's Olsen winner. Bald Archies organiser Peter Batey said there were more than 100 paintings to choose from this year, including a number of portraits of Russell Crowe brandishing a telephone and one of Peter Costello in drag called It's My Liberal Party and I'll Cry If I Want To. The Bald Archy is supposedly judged by Maude, a sulphur-crested cockatoo.

NEW NATIONAL ARTS + ENVIRONMENT GROUP CALL FOR INPUT
Are you aware of any current arts + environment projects?
A new national 'eco-arts' working group to promote the use of the arts in the development of sustainable communities has been formed in response to a presentation about arts and ecology by Janet Cohen at the INSP!RE Conference in September last year. The presentation was the result of Janet’s attendance at an international arts and ecology conference, Earth Rites, in Seattle USA and subsequent study tour of USA arts and environment groups and projects, funded by the Australia Council’s CCD Board. The establishment of a working group was a recommendation of the presentation and conference delegates. Members of the group are: Janet Cohen, Susan Conroy, Paul Brown, Mehreen Faruqi, Cheryle Yin-Lo, Geoff Young, Ray Goodlass, Berenice Gerrand, Ian Plowman, David Curtis and Vic Keighery (CEO of Regional Arts NSW). The first activity of the working group is an audit of current arts + enviroment projects to establish what the current level of activity is, who is doing what, and where. The group would very much appreciate your help. If you are involved in an arts + environment project, or know of others who are, please contact Cheryle Yin Lo to obtain an audit form Mobile 0407 409 445 Email c.yin-lo@bmwhi.org.au

3wAyXchange3WAYXCHANGE AT THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES
March 2006, Albury | Melbourne
3wAyXchange was a creative collaboration between three of the world's leading youth circuses - The Flying Fruit Fly Circus in Albury Wodonga, the Brewarrina Youth Circus from Brewarrina and Zip Zap Circus from Cape Town in South Africa. Commissioned by Festival Melbourne 2006, the cultural celebration of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the 28 member cast of 3wAyXchange (ranging in age from 10 to 25) had just seven days to rehearse before having the distinction of being the first show to open in the Big Top at the Games' cultural festival on 16 March. All three companies are justifiably proud of the show: it featured stunning aerial acts, contortion, juggling, superb clowning and a finale featuring a traditional African dance which the Zip Zap Circus performers have taught their fellow cast members. 3wAyXchange was a
cultural exchange that will redefine and reshape the ideals of these young artists for the future. Contact Jane Longhurst, The Flying Fruit Fly Circus

Film stills from the 39 Hours websiteNIMBIN'S 39 HOURS SHORT FILM FESTIVAL & COMPETITION
January 2006, Nimbin
It was standing-room-only at Nimbin's Bush Theatre on the night of Sunday 29 January as the crowd gathered to view the completed works and to cheer the presentation of awards to Nimbin's 'golden globers' at the 39 Hours Short Film Festival & Competition. The event, which gives competitors a gruelling schedule in which to make a short film in Nimbin, was organised by the Nimbin Film Industry Group, a sub-branch of the Nimbin CTC. Films had to be scripted and shot, music and effects added, editing and titles, and copies to be delivered to the judges within 39 hours from the 5pm Friday registration time to the strict 10am Sunday morning deadline. Several filmmakers worked until dawn to get their films complete, and the Nimbin CTC provided technical assistance around the clock. The prize for the Best 39 Hour Short Film Award went to Plan B from Kicking Horse Production, which also won Best Male Actor for Simon Moore. Best Production went to The Good Housewife by Shag Pile Productions, which also picked up Best Female Actor for Suellen Howard. The 39 Hour Short Film Festival was sponsored by Lismore City Council, Thursday Plantation and Nimbin Hemp Bar. Website www.nimbinfilmindustry.org
