Platform
Papers 11: Art in the regions 2007 launch
7 February 2007, Albury Wodonga
The latest in the Platform Papers series of quarterly essays from Currency House
focuses on the arts in regional Australia. In A Regional State of Mind: Making
Art Outside Metropolitan Australia, Lyndon Terracini, acclaimed operatic baritone,
founder of NORPA and current Brisbane Festival director, makes a strong plea for
respecting the bush artist. As director of the Queensland Music Festival Terracini
spent months in the outback building huge performance works. Terracini describes
the commissioning of music, the collaboration of local skills, and the way the
communities take ownership. A creative culture, he argues, can be life-changing.
Terracini will be at the Hume Building Society Butter Factory Theatre in Wodonga
on 7 February 2007 at 7pm for the launch of A Regional State of Mind in
association with Murray Arts and Hothouse Theatre. A free event featuring a panel

Project Reports
A-llad-in
the Tablelands
The North West's second 'whole community' pantomime produced by Pam Menzies
A-ladd-in the Tablelands
follows the success of last year's pantomime, Peter Pan - lost in the
Tablelands. Menzies' search for the region's Peter Pan last year brought her
the Independent Member for New England, Richard Torbay. The pirates were played
by the local doctors; police and nurses became fairies; teachers and academics
were Indians; hairdressers became mermaids and the then Mayor, Brian Chetwynd,
was the narrator. Peter Pan - lost in the Tablelands raised money for Children's
Services in the local hospital. People begged for another. So A-ladd-in the
Tablelands was born and community members took no convincing to become involved
including local RADO Jack Ritchie as a 'gorgeous' Fruit of Puddledock and the
Chief of Police as a tomato. $15,000 was raised for a much needed bladder scanner
for the hospital. Menzies calls the productions a 'Fun Raising experience'.
Peter Pan lost in the Tablelands
was auspiced by Arts North West and received CASP funding. A-ladd-in the Tablelands
was undertaken with the support of Armidale Dumaresq Council and was self-funded.
