How are we going? Directions for the arts in The Creative Age DVD coverLAUNCH OF THE DVD OF THE 2005 FORUM HOW ARE WE GOING? DIRECTIONS FOR THE ARTS IN THE CREATIVE AGE
12 May, Sydney
Last year the Regional Arts NSW Audience Development Program developed a one day forum of significant Australian and international thinkers who came together at the opening of the Byron Bay Writers Festival to talk about directions for the arts in 'The Creative Age'. As the arts make the case for their social importance and economic value in this new 'post-industrial,information-driven-global-marketplace' world, we asked, 'Does the evidence support the claims?' and 'What policies and infrastructure will support cultural development'? Now Regional Arts NSW has produced a new (FREE!) DVD containing highlights of the day in a film made by award-winning documentary filmmakers, Cathy Henkle and Jeff Cani as well as audio transcripts of talks and a 'live' broadcast of ABC Radio National's Australia Talks Back on the topic, 'Does Australia need a cultural policy?' which also took place at the forum.
Available on request from Regional Arts NSW from 12 May. To pre-request a copy, send an email including your postal address to admin@regionalartsnsw.com.au with 'DVD' in the subject line.
More information about 'How are we going?' on the Regional Arts NSW website [here].

Project Reports

Gilgandra High School students with the 'Coo-ee' graffiti muralRURAL TOWNS BEAT GRAFFITI ARTS TOUR
April 2006, Orana region

A squirt of the paint can capped off Youth Week in Gilgandra with a visit from Slippry Sirkus. Gilgandra was the last stop on the Rural Towns Beat Graffiti Arts Tour of the Orana region, an initiative of Narromine Shire Council to help combat illegal graffiti in regional areas by transforming it into a positive activity. Forty young people participated in workshops creating legal aerosol art murals as part of the project. Other stops included Narromine, Trangie and Dubbo. The project was made possible with funding from the Regional Arts NSW Country Arts Support Program. Local Councils Dubbo, Gilgandra and Narromine contributed to costs in their respective local government areas. Tutors were Joel Hanson and Yanni Scott-Davis from Slippry Sirkus and Nathan Brown from Beyond Empathy. “I wasn’t sure what to expect at first, but all the reports back from the communities have been very positive,” said Yanni. “It’s been a really great process.” The results of the workshops are displayed in selected areas of town, revamping and revitalizing these public spaces.

Works on display in the galleryRED DUST & PADDY MELONS COMMUNITY GALLERY
2005, Hillston
The tiny town of Hillston has a booming community gallery thanks a group of over 60 dedicated local people who committed their time and money to make it happen last year. Together they reformed the local arts council and raised funds to rent a space by arranging local artists to paint a large mural in the town for a commission. The gallery provides exhibition space for work by over 42 members including art, jewellery, metal and wood work, as well as offering workshops four times a month. All commissions go back into funding workshops and towards running costs. The space has been so popular that a move to larger premises was required shortly after opening last year. The gallery is now housed in an historical old shop in the main street of Hillston - a terrific place for showcasing local and regional talent and harnessing the talent of the future. Red Dust & Paddy Melons Community Gallery has just received a Regional Arts NSW Country Arts Support Program (CASP) grant to run a photography course. Contact Catherine Byrne Tel 02 6967 2776.

CONTENT, CONSOLIDATION AND CLOUT: HOW WILL REGIONAL AUSTRALIA BE AFFECTED BY MEDIA OWNERSHIP CHANGES?
"
The government has released its proposed media law reforms, and its regional Australia that stands to lose the most." So say Tim Dwyer, Derek Wilding, Helen Wilson and Simon Curtis from the Communications Law Centre who have examined four regional locations – Wollongong, Townsville, Launceston and Toowoomba – and found that residents have few sources of local news, and many are angry at the poor quality and lack of coverage of major events. Yet the government’s proposed media diversity test will allow further and significant consolidation in all four locations. The report also reviews media ownership and local content in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US and the UK.
