The concept for the episode was to take three emerging artists to a secret location

was incredible," says Hobie Porter (pictured). "We had to conceive,
develop and resolve a work in two days, whilst also meeting the demands of the
film crew." The north coast documentary is likely to be last in the six-part
series, which employs high profile, established and emerging artists on different
locations around the country. Painting Australia will be aired in prime

Girls
woodcarving project
July 2006, Shellharbour
Master Woodcarver for the Royal Australian Navy, Enn Muller, was employed
as artist-in-residence for a woodcarving project at the Tongarra Museum in Albion
Park in July. The project, which was a partnership with Regional Arts NSW and
Shellharbour City Council, focussed on developing dialogue between young people
and their local museum. Girls from Albion Park and the broader Shellharbour area
were invited to participate. The program included an introduction to local history
and the significance of local heritage items listed in Shellharbour City Council's
Local Environment Plan. The hands-on workshops addressed the safe use of woodcarving
tools, basic drawing instruction and carving techniques. A bonus for the project
was the request from some fathers to work alongside their daughters, so they could
learn woodcarving skills together. "You tend to discuss things when you're
working together," said one of the fathers.

What's On
The Dunera Boys: Friendly Aliens
1 2 September, Hay
6 7 September, Sydney
Devised by young people from the Hay community with Outback Theatre for
Young People, The Dunera Boys features original diaries, poems and songs
by the Dunera Boys. Who were the Dunera Boys? In the early days of World War II,
the British government, responding to fear of enemy aliens, temporarily interned
thousands of suspected individuals. Australia agreed to help the mother
country and, in 1940, the HMT Dunera brought a group of 2,500, mostly Jewish,
refugees from Nazi Germany to Australia. They were interned in Hay and other camps
in rural Australia. It's an event that has had a significant impact on both the
town of Hay and the internees, who maintain links with the town through the Dunera
Museum and the Hay War Memorial High School. When eventually released many chose
to stay in Australia and their contributions to post-war Australian society have
been profound. Contact Amy Hardingham, Artistic Director Outback Theatre for Young

Drumming on Water
2007 2008
Drumming
on Water is a compelling tale of loyalty and obsession, told by Emma Patching,
former drummer in an all-girls jazz band playing on the Sydney Harbour Showboat
ferries in the 1930s. It is a beautifully wicked yarn, hauntingly echoed and encouraged
by the sounds of the saxophone played by a young woman who seems to personify
the girls from the band, a vision from the past. Directed by Kate Gaul, and performed
by award-winning actor, Chrissie Shaw, with saxophonist Sylvia Mitchell, Drumming
on Water features an elegant and evocative set designed by Imogen Keen, suggestive
of both the waters of the harbour, and the mists of time. The show is a two-hander,
and is totally self-sufficient, touring with set, lights, sound, costume and stage-manager/operator.
