Sydney
Royal Arts Show
5 18 April, Sydney
From pumpkin scones to slipcast ceramics ... from photography to sugar art, the
ever evolving Arts Competition at the Royal Easter Show is full of surprises.
Don't let the traditional image of competitive country women battling it out for
first prize for their fruitcakes fool you into thinking the Sydney Royal Arts
Show is not a serious, quality show. With $80,000 in prize money of offer in over
350 categories including pottery, painting, photography,
drawing, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, knitting, dressmaking, millinery, embroidery,
beading, crochet, woodwork, leather work, quilting, papercrafts and recycled art
works and a panel of respected, big name judges,
we suspect it's about time the arts competition at the show got just a bit more
attention ... and best of all, everything in it is for sale (and most of it is
sold by the end of the week - so get in quick). At the Sydney Showground, Sydney

3rd National Limestone Sculpture Symposium
February 2007, Mt Gambier
Sculptor
Ken Hutchinson from the Central West was one of 46 national and international
artists to converge on the Old Mount Gambier Goal and its precinct to chip, saw,
rasp, grind and chisel their way through some hefty blocks of local coralline
limestone, and the much harder local reddolomite, at the National Limestone Sculpture
Symposium in SA in February. One of the features of the symposium were the hard
stone carving master classes run by Sylvio Apponi, an experienced stonemason and
sculptor from Adelaide. Sylvio ran the classes in a central area using the local
red dolomite to provide 'more than enough' challenges for the participants who
elected to take on the material. The Symposium was organised by Country Arts SA
under the leadership of Jill Mclean, with the City of Mount Gambier as a major
partner.
