Saltwater Yirrkala Bark Paintings of the Sea
Until 3 June, Lake Macquarie
Gaymala Yunupinu , 'Gumatj Monuk' (1998) moiety Yirritja, clan Gumatj, bark painting 121 x 93cm Australian National Maritime Museum collection photographer Andrew FrolowsAn exhibition of spectacular bark paintings that double as legal documents, documenting the spiritual and legal basis of the Yolngu people’s ownership of land in north-east Arnhem Land. The works were painted in the late 1990s to explain the artists' traditional ties with the region’s coastal zone – their ‘saltwater country’. Together they map hundreds of kilometres of coastal tract, showing physical and social features throughout the region. Vibrant images abound – ancestral beings, ancient mariners, symbolic icons and a host of spiritual creatures including snakes, crocodiles, fish, turtles and birds, all set against traditional sacred designs representing fresh, tidal and salt water.
Workshops will be conducted at the gallery throughout the exhibition by members of the Lake Macquarie Indigenous community.

Carita Farrer in The Messiah. Photo: Jules BoagThe Messiah: Country Energy Regional Tour
12 June – 14 July, NSW & Victoria
HotHouse Theatre, 'Australia's leading regional theatre company', which is currently celebrating 10 successful years, is about to take their 2006 hit show – The Messiah by Patrick Barlow – on a two month small towns tour of southern NSW and north east Victoria. The Country Energy Regional Tour will visit 19 communities rarely served by theatre touring , including, in NSW, the towns of Deniliquin, Stanhope, Holbrook, Balranald and Jerilderie. The Messiah is a beautiful, whimsical play within a play about two incompetent, overly-ambitious amateur who actors attempt to produce the ultimate Christmas story with an over-zealous opera singer ... and very little else. The results are hilarious as the cast's artistic ambition is compromised by their lack of resources, but ultimately realised thanks to their unlimited optimism and spirit. "Ridiculously funny yet gloriously exhilarating" said The Guardian in 1983. This joyful revival from Albury Wodonga's HotHouse Theatre is that and more. Full details on the website. A groundbreaking new report on the state of the arts and cultural industries sector in and around Broken Hill is now available on the Regional Arts NSW website. The report - Quality of Light, Quality of Life: Professional Artists and Cultural Industries in and around Broken Hill - is based on new research which is the first of its kind undertaken in this remote far west region of NSW. It offers an important new model for future arts research in regional Australia. An initiative of West Darling Arts and the Regional Arts NSW Audience Development Project, managed by Lisa Andersen, who co-authored the report, the project came about after the death of artist Pro Hart in 2006 led to concerns that the arts sector in the far west was both ageing and declining.

Project Reports

Lewis Coe at one of Adrian Symes' music video workshops in Condolbolin, 2006Centacare's filmmaker-in-residence
30 April – 4 May, Narromine
Filmmaker Adrian Symes is working with young people, predominantly Indigenous youth, on producing a film about their lives in Narromine. Centacare has been providing services to young people of Narromine for the last nine years and a constant issue they face is lack of access to resources and training opportunities (there is no TAFE in Narromine and limited public transport to Dubbo) ... and consequent boredom which leads to trouble. Knowing the young people have a real interest in filming and working with videos, this project expands on the work already done by Centacare in trying to re-engage young people in learning and re-connecting with their community. The target group are those who feel alienated from their community and the filmmaking will provide an opportunity for them to gain positive reinforcement from that community. On completion there will be a community screening and the film will be entered into appropriate film festivals. Contact Alan Mounsey, Centacare Wilcannia-Forbes Tel 02 6889 4932.

As well as involving the church more in the life of the Albury community and particularly the city's new cultural precinct, the project aims to bring an old form of entertainment to a new audience and particularly to show off the pipe organ as an exciting musical entertainment instrument through the accompaniment of silent movies. There will be two other Silent Movies nights at the church this year, one on 3 August following the opening of AlburyCity's new Library Museum and cultural precinct and another on 13 October.
