Highlights
Lismore Lantern Festival: Awaken your dreams
23 24 June, Lismore
It's no wonder Lismore's famous community festival is on Tourism
NSW's list of 'Must See' events for 2007. Featuring a flotilla of fantastic illuminated
sculptures, with lanterns, giant illuminated puppets, fine art and pyrotechnics,
the festival includes a parade with bands, a fabulous street party with music
and dancing and a spectacular finale with a fire show. Come early and enjoy top
rate street performers, an arts and crafts market and street party. This year's
parade features a giant Hippopotamus created with Lismore's Sudanese community
and a 2.5m tall 'Dream Holder' made by the young people of Coraki to be floated
up the river. Other highlights include The Men's Mobile Shed and an enchanting
fleet of 'Dream Boats' decorated by community groups from around the area. "Our
ability to hold a vision, a dream, is one of our most powerful attributes as human
beings and our 2007 theme, Re-Enchanting the Dream, is about waking up to the
magic and imagination we need to bring hopes and dreams into our lives once more,"
Jyllie Jackson, Artistic Director, said. The 'Market deLight' and street theatre
begin at 2pm. Parade starts at 5.30pm with Fiery Finale at 6.45pm and street party

2007 National Photography Prize: Getting fictitious
1 June 8 July, Albury
'Constructed
Realms: Photography as Theatre' is the theme for this year's biennial National
Photography Prize held at one of the country's key centres for excellence and
innovation in contemporary Australian photography, Albury Regional Art Gallery.
This year for the first time the Gallery is offering a new major acquisitive prize
of $10,000 in addition to the existing $11,500 total prize money. The theme -
also a new introduction for 2007 - seeks to highlight work that explores photography
as construct: the creation of fictitious images to tell a story or express an
idea, as opposed to objective reportage, documentary or freeze-framed real
images or the candid moment. The exhibition will focus on images that have a strongly
implied narrative or engage in obvious artifice, such as the tableau vivant, posed
or constructed scene. 2007 Judge, Dr Daniel Palmer, Art Critic & Lecturer,
Theory of Art & Design Monash University pre-selected the exhibition from
over 300 entries. The opening will be followed by a day of activity and discussion
at the Photography Symposium on 2 June. Contact Albury Regional Art Gallery Tel

Spirit of the Bush Drought Relief Concert
30 June, Grenfell
Jimmy
Barnes, Adam Brand, Diesel, Steve Forde & The Flange, Tania Kernaghan, Leo
Sayer and The McClymonts will join Lee Kernaghan on the bill at a massive free
concert in the Central West later this month. "I am thrilled that we have
such a great line up of artists who have donated their time and talent to join
us and help make June 30 a day to be remembered for many years to come by the
thousands of families that will join us in Grenfell," Lee Kernaghan said.
The first Spirit of the Bush Concert was held in Horsham, Victoria, in March and
saw a turn-out of 20,000 people who came to enjoy a day of music as a community
and put aside the pressures created by drought. The idea for the NSW event was
born on the back of a Toyota ute in January as Lee Kernaghan and NSW Premier Morris
Iemma led the Cavalcade at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. "I was telling
the Premier about the Victorian concert," Lee said. "He was fast to
express his interest in helping us produce an event for NSW. Within a couple of
weeks his staff called us and said the Premier will provide $150,000 for a drought
relief event for NSW." In addition to Morris Iemma's contribution, the Spirit
of the Bush concert has been made possible with the support of a number of major
sponsors as well as the Grenfell Council. Website www.spiritofthebush.com

artists from across the region's schools and youth theatres delivering comedy,
romance, thrills and drama every night all based on the same 'neutral script'.
The text this year is by Vanessa Bates and includes many of the best-loved features
of previous scripts, including the use of optional lines. To round out each night,
HotHouse Theatre has assembled a panel of highly talented theatre professionals
to provide feedback to artists and audiences. Behind the scenes there is a series
of technical traineeships on offer, a poster design competition and extensive
workshop support and resources for participants and teachers. Come and celebrate
the imaginations of the Murray's young people every weeknight at 7.30pm Bookings

Disappointment in the arts budget for regional Australians
Regional Arts Australia's $60 million bid for a range of arts initiatives
in the bush over four years failed to gain support in May's Federal Budget. The
detailed bid was result of a two year national consultation conducted by Regional
Arts Australia with thousands of people in regional, rural and remote communities
across the country. "It was highly considered and would have greatly improved
the opportunities for regional Australians to see, hear, enjoy and participate
in a rich and varied artistic life in their communities," said Ken Lloyd,
Secretary of RAA. The RAA proposals were for a national regional arts day; a biennial
regional capital of culture program; a pilot program to use libraries as arts
hubs; funding for new opportunities for young people; a performing arts touring
program for isolated and remote communities and funding to improve local arts
infrastructure in regional areas. "We will now be reviewing our bid to see
how it could be more successful next budget round," Mr Lloyd said.

Positive news for the arts in the Budget
The 2007-08 Budget contained lots of good news for the broader arts community,
with allocations for large and small performing arts companies, the visual arts
sector, and the Australian film industry as well as for a range of specific arts
and cultural initiatives. New announcements include a $24.1m boost over four years
for twenty major performing arts companies (up 35%); an extra $19.5m over four
years to approximately 60 small to medium performing arts companies and $24.7m
over four years through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy (up $5.2m over its
initial allocation in 2003). New initiatives included funds for 'Australia on
the World Stage' touring program; the Indigenous Cultural Property Program ($4.7m
over four years); the Australian Ballet School ($4.6m for the year) and additional
funds of $21.2m for the National Portrait Gallery (bringing to the total to $90m).
A new Producer Rebate has been introduced to replace the 10BA and 10B taxation
schemes for film makers, providing a 40% tax rebate for Australian films; and
$10.5m has been allocated for community and national digital radio broadcasting.
Lastly, provision has been made for $10m for 'Stage Two 'of a new National Sports
Museum at the MCG.

The Lonely Horse Band rides again
23 29 May, Western NSW
With
a penchant for writing and performing songs about Western NSW; a desire to play
in every small community in the West (slogan: 'We play one horse towns') and a
will to put original music back on the agenda in remote regions, The Lonely Horse
Band has just completed another tour of the far west of NSW. The trio carved a
name for themselves last year with an album of music focused entirely on the small
town of Nymagee. The songs paved the way for a seven part radio documentary and
possibly the best Outback Music Festival the town has seen. This year the artists
have been visiting communities such as Tilpa, Hermidale, Nevertire and Gulargambone
as well as performing in Bourke and the remote Culgoa Community Hall,
between Brewarrina and Weilmoringle. Not content just to visit, the band intend
writing and recording more material along the way and further developing the repertoire
of music and poetry that is specific to Western NSW.

Aboriginal gateway sculptures bring ancient art into
new setting
Throughout 2007, Moree
Morees
lack of public art is about to change. Renowned Kamilaroi artist Lawrence Leslie
is working in the garden of the Moree Plains Gallery carving giant red-gum tree
trunks with designs from his cultural tradition. The trees depict four traditional
Kamilaroi creatures: goanna, brolga, pelican and snake. The Kamilaroi people,
Australias second largest indigenous language group, were carvers rather
than painters and the Moree district is famous for its Kamilaroi carved trees.
Sculpted living trees can be found on properties throughout the Shire. When completed,
the carvings will be installed as gateway sculptures beside major access roads
into Moree to the north, south, east and west.

Our
Creeks: Rocky, Terania & Tuntable
May December, The Channon
The Channon Cultural Collective has begun making its first public art project:
a mosaic made from recycled materials to highlight our values towards our local
environment and each other. The mosaic is set to become a feature in the local
Coronation Park. The design of the mosaic was a collaborative adventure which
resulted in a landscape / mapping image of our creeks. Both the location and the
subject have brought different people together to work on a single goal - a process
in which we are enjoying our community and adding to it. Three creeks meet at
Coronation Park as do different people in our community. Our hope is that our
public art will enrich our environment and be appreciated by the next generation.

Itchy Hands, Itchy Feet + the Young'N'Deadly Day
10 21 April 2007, Evans Head
Itchy
Hands, Itchy Feet was a two part Youth Week project targeted at young people aged
12-18 from Coraki, Broadwater, Woodburn and Evans Head. The 'Itchy Hands' component
involved six art workshops run by two local artists, exploring a number of different
artistic media: drawing, charcoal, pastels, painting on canvas, working with clay,
carving besser blocks, printing on glass and Indigenous art. 'Itchy Feet' involved
six dance workshops over the two weeks, with a group of young people putting together
a dance. The artwork was exhibition and the dance performed at the 'Young N Deadly
Day' on 21 April - a chance to show off our young local talent. The day, which
was attended by young people from Kyogle, Lismore, Ballina, Coraki and, of course,
the Evans Head area, also included skate competition and market . The hope is
to make it an annual event.

Cinema Cafés: bringing movies to regional
towns
Like to see new release movies at your local cafe, club or pub? A Cinema Café
franchise may be the answer. Cinema cafés show new release movies, in armchair
comfort, in existing rural businesses such as clubs, pubs, cafes and restaurants.
They are designed for, and indeed are only available to, small isolated rural
and outback towns under the unique movie distribution arrangements established
by the franchise owner. Cinema Cafés are for-profit enterprises, but the
concept is the product of community planning and capacity building activities
undertaken in the far north east of Victoria. "A Cinema Café represents
an important social and cultural service to rural communities while adding to
the profitability and sustainability of the club or business that owns them,"
says Frank Evants, Executive Director of Odd One Out Pty Ltd, the owner of the
Cinema Café trademark. Frank, was awarded a special achievement award in
2005 from the Tumbarumba
Shire Council for establishing a Cinema Café in that town and this
followed on from the success of Corryong's
Cinema Café which opened in April 2004. Odd One Out Pty Ltd is now
offering Cinema café franchises in isolated rural and outback Australia.
