Not Like Beckett
26 – 28 July, Lismore
Darren Gilshenan is Walloon BeckettMeet Walter Walloon Beckett. He’s an all-singing, all-dancing, humorist extraordinaire, last of the famous Beckett clan… And he’s a rabbit (!) Darren Gilshenan brings his sharp wit and physicality to a unique character who will entertain and at times shock you in this dark and comical one-man show. It's also the first production for Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA) by director Julian Louis who joined the company earlier this year as Artistic Director. Louis says his attraction to Michael Watt's unique and quintessentially Australian play was "immediate". Promising a raw, razor-sharp and dangerously funny reflection on the colonisation of Australia, Not Like Beckett is a playful allegory, exploring the light and dark shades of human nature –of human nature – what it is to love and what it is to be human. With music by Phillip Johnston, design by Alexandra Sommer and lighting design by Verity Hampson. 8pm at the Star Court Theatre . Tickets $35/$30/$18. NSW arts budget announced
The NSW Government has announced its arts budget for 2007-2008 with a total allocation of $286.6m for NSW artists and art organisations this year. While this is a drop of some 6% on last year's total figure, much of the reduction is a result of a number of major capital works projects coming to an end (such as the $49m Carriageworks in Sydney). Highlights of the announcement are a boost in funding for capital works for the State's major cultural institutions and an increase in support for the major NSW performing arts companies. Impacts of the budget for artists and arts organisations in regional, rural and remote NSW will not be known until later in the year.

Educating for the creative workforce: rethinking arts and education
A report prepared for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation in partnership with the Australia Council for the Arts by Kate Oakley. The argument that studying the arts boosts academic achievements in other subjects has been the subject of extensive research and the consensus view could be summed up as 'not proven'. But as Kate Oakley argues, there is stronger evidence for the relationship between arts education and a variety of social or 'non cognitive' skills, from self-confidence to communication skills.
