Bus shelter lizard by Robert GoolagongWYK, or 'Wiradjuri Youth Kulture', is a group exhibition of innovative art works developed and curated by young Aboriginal artists from regional South Eastern Australia - the heart of Wiradjuri. Showing local Aboriginal history through the eyes of young people, it is the first of its kind in the region. The works were produced as part of project that took place in Griffith in 2006. Students from KOOL (the Koori Outreach Options for Learning program at TAFE) worked with professional artists, educators and elders to explore issues of place, identity, history. Together they experimented with multimedia practices to produce an exhibition which questions our perceived notions of 'real' indigenous arts and cultural expression, especially in regional areas. Following a successful show at the Griffith Regional Art Gallery the show, which features poster art, paintings, video interviews and short film, soundscapes and photography, opens this month at the Fountain Court, NSW Parliament House. Artist Rick Andersen working on Ritual for the exhibition Not Another Landscape. Photo: Jeff MinersNot Another Landscape
9 – 24 June 2007, Moruya
'Not Another Landscape' was an exhibition of contemporary works by seven artists from Bega Valley and Eurobodalla which showcased unconventional ways of representing the landscape: Rick Andersen's intimate works reference ceremony and convey the inherent power of the land. Lorna Crane's highly textured, small and large works, incorporate acrylic and metal with weathered patina effects. Lola Cullen combines bitumen, oil, jute, and acrylic. Margaret Dimoff uses rollers, scrapers, blow torches, metal, modelling compound and mixed media. Carmen Ky's high-keyed landscapes resonate a spirituality anchored by a cartographic mapping of the landscape. Susan Christie's acrylics are both exquisite and sublime and Cameron Williams produces herculean works in clay. The exhibition was presented by the Eurobodalla Shire Council in the lovely heritage-listed Mechanics Institute in Moruya.

Turning The Pages
Artist's impression of the sculpture as a whole in site next to the Pages River in Murrurundi October – November, Upper Hunter
Approximately 160 students from 5 schools in the Pages River Catchment area have been participating in workshops over the past few weeks, making artworks that represent creatures that live in or around the Pages River. The project is funded by the NSW Environmental Trust through its City and Country Environment Restoration Program and the Upper Hunter Waterkeeprs Alliance. The workshops are headed by a team of Sydney-based artists who work under the guidance of Jenny Turpin from Jennifer Turpin Studios. Most of the students taking part in the art workshops have already participated in extra science activities informing them about the unique character of the river. “Now it is their opportunity to express their knowledge and relationship to the River in a large art work” said project coordinator Hanna Kay from Murrurundi. Following the workshops, the 160 artworks made by the students will be assembled into a 130 metre long kinetic sculpture called 'River Quiver'. This massive, colourful and moving sculpture will then be installed next to the river in Murrurundi with a special day of celebration planned for 18 November to unveil the work.

Indigenous Artreach
Young children from the local community will present their artworks as part of the exhibition27 November – 14 December, Kempsey
An exhibition of work produced at the Njinanjang Mulung Ga Aboriginal Centre opening this month at the Kempsey Shire Library is the culmination of nine months of arts activity. Through weekly sessions and ongoing mentorships by Bob Mulder and other local Elders as well as local artists, Karen Hall and Dave Fernando and the local TAFE staff, the community has produced an array of paintings, mosaic tables, various sewn garments, jewellery and other craft. Project Coordinator, Henry Anuwai, reports that the community is extremely proud of this exhibition particularly in view of Tony Vinson's "Dropping Off the Edge" report earlier this year in which Kempsey was ranked as one of the most disadvantaged indigenous communities in Australia. "This project illustrates that when given the opportunity, support and encouragement, art can be an amazing conduit to building people and communities. Through the exhibition, they hope to show that they have a lot to offer and to inspire other indigenous communities". Contact Henry Anuwai.
