Highlights

Robyn Sweaney, Our Little Plot, 2007Robyn Sweaney, Emoh Ruo
Until 22 December, Sydney
Emoh Ruo (meaning in reverse, Our Home) is Robyn Sweaney’s solo exhibition of paintings of classic North Coast houses at Tim Olsen’s Gallery in Sydney this month. Sweaney's latest paintings and drawings of houses sourced from the north coast region are of real homes, not the glamorous new wave of large and expensive houses rapidly being developed in the region. Robyn says she is drawn to the intimate and unique environments of other people's homes and the way each reflects their owner’s lives and aesthetics. “If we stop and spend a bit of time studying these homes we can appreciate their simple beauty, the balance and patterns that have been created and now exist between the personal boundaries of these spaces.” she says. Sweaney's acceptance into such the prestigious gallery Tim Olsen Gallery was a result of ‘Visual Arts Speed Dating’ an event organised by Arts Northern Rivers to connect local artists with galleries and buyers in the cities. View the work online and at the Tim Olsen Gallery Annex, 72a Windsor Street, Paddington Tues - Fri 11am-6pm Sat 11am-5pm Tel 02 9361 6205 Email wop@timolsengallery.com Website www.timolsengallery.com

A record number of amateur and semi-professional astronomers and photographers from around Australia took part in this year's awards this year, organised by the Central West Astronomical Society. Entries were judged not only for their technical skill but also their ability to capture the beauty of the sky and the intrinsic interest of astronomy. The images range from spectacular shots of the recent passing of Comet McNaught, to constellations and nebula, the Milky Way and the Moon. To help celebrate, the Museum of the Riverina and the Wagga Wagga Observatory will also host a special school holiday program Planets in Your PJs, during January. Allan Chawner, Pasha Wave (2007), digital print on Adshel paper 600 x 400cm, courtesy the artistFloat: watercraft in art
Until 3 February 2008, Lake Macquarie
Allan Chawner's monumental photograph of the grounded Pasha Bulker, extending across a six-metre wall, is the highlight of this new exhibition at Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery. Tanker, tinny, trawler, freighter, or pirate ship, the boat is one of Australia’s most enduring obsessions. Float: watercraft in art features eight contemporary artists exploring this passion: Kendal Murray, Tim Silver, Sally Smart, Allan Chawner, Yvonne Koolmatrie, Jane Lander, John Turier, & Shaun Wilson The works selected reflect an evolving relationship with our watery environs – lake, sea, ocean and river – and the particular (and sometimes peculiar) means by which we seek to either discover, traverse, take pleasure in, or conquer them. The exhibition includes an opportunity for kids to build their own boat from LEGO® building bricks in the gallery, with children’s holiday workshops in January and a Float: watercraft in art children’s activity book. Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery, First Street Booragul Tel 02 4965 8260 Email artgallery@lakemac.nsw.gov.au Website www.lakemac.com.au
Exhibition launch 2pm 16 December, with participating artists, juke box fun and refreshments.

Nolan at Bundanon
Until 5 February 2008, Nowra
Sidney Nolan, Aboriginal HeadSir Sidney Nolan was a giant in 20th century Australian art and famous for his 'Ned Kelly' series of paintings. He worked in many and varied mediums. In 1982 Nolan worked in Arthur Boyd’s Bundanon studio, west of Nowra on the banks of the Shoalhaven River, on a series of large paintings of heads. Instead of paint brushes he worked with aerosol spray cans. His talented use of this medium created an allusive yet suggestive body of work, individually striking and commanding in total. Nolan was married to Arthur Boyd’s sister Mary and together with Arthur purchased land on the Shoalhaven River which today forms part of the Bundanon Trust properties. He also donated works to the Bundanon Collection, from which this exhibition is drawn. While the exhibition Sidney Nolan A new retrospective is running at the Art Gallery of NSW, the South Coast has a chance to see an alternative exhibition of this legendary artist’s work at the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre Tel 02 4422 0648 Email artscentre@shoalhaven.nsw.gov.au

Luca della Robbia: Florence, Campanile of the Cathedral, Music (Orpheus) (1439) (Detail)ABC Radio | Orpheus Remix Awards
The Orpheus Remix Awards are awards for new 4-minute musico-dramatic works for radio. It is 400 years since the premiere of the world's first acknowledged opera, Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. To celebrate, the ABC invites listeners to compose their own response to both the Orpheus myth and the notion of 'opera', in the form of original 4-minute works for radio. Successful works will be heard on ABC Radio National and ABC Classic FM, and available for download from the ABC website. 400 years after Monteverdi’s successful creation sparked the new opera genre, this is a chance to re-visit this idea within the musically and sonically diverse context of contemporary radio and audio technology AND a shockingly succinct 4 minutes! It's also a chance to delve into the Orpheus myth, with all its resonances regarding the power of music, love, and a journey into the underworld, thrown into the mix.
