NAIDOC 2003 Winning EntryNAIDOC ART AWARD 2004
The NAIDOC Art Award provides the opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from the most remote regions of the country to the biggest urban centres to showcase their talents. This theme of this year's NAIDOC week, which is from 4th to 11th July, is 'Self-Determination - Our Community - Our Future - Our Responsibility'. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are invited to submit works incorporating the theme to compete for the $5,000 prize. The winning entry also becomes the National NAIDOC week poster. Over the years Max Watters, OAM, has gathered a spectacular collection of over 300 pieces of contemporary Australian art. Nationally recognised, it's a collection that reflects a rich diversity in taste and a sure and uncompromising eye. The entire collection was recently handed over by Max to the people of Muswellbrook and this exhibition features 122 works in various media by artists including Charles Blackman, Mike Brown, James Clifford, Bob Dickerson, Rew Hanks, Richard Larter, Euan Macleod, Chris O'Doherty, John Perceval, Garry Shead, Tony Tuckson, Vicki Varvaressos, Danila Vassilieff, Tony Coleing, Alexander Danko, Betty Gleeson, Richard Stankiewicz, Fiona Fell . Local Councils play a special part in the artistic and cultural life of all regional NSW communities. For those who have recently begun a new term in local government, the Regional Arts NSW network looks forward to continuing and strengthening the partnership. ALBURY CIRCUS CO WINS SYDNEY MYER AWARD
Congratulations to Albury-based circus act Acrobat which received the Group Award at the 2003 Sydney Myer Performing arts awards in Melbourne on 29 March. The awards pay tribute to outstanding achievement in drama, dance, music, mime, opera, circus and puppetry. The NSW Ministry for the Arts reports it's the 3rd year in the row that a NSW based company has won the group award, with western Sydney's Urban Theatre Projects taking out the 2002 award and Northern Rivers Peforming Arts Inc the winner in 2001.

HERITAGE FESTIVAL - TAKE A WALK THROUGH HISTORY

Where once the bushrangers escaped into the Bargo Brush after holding up travellers on the road to and from Goulburn, there is a ruin. Where once the volunteers at Wirrimbirra Sanctuary huddled into a tiny office, there is a fantastic building where the spirit soars and the sun shines in. Both are part of the Built Environment, both provided foundation for the future. ON THE EDGE AND BLIND FAITH EXHIBITIONS

Award-winning Hervey Bay artist Robert Berry will fill the ground floor of Lismore Regional Gallery in April with evocative paintings of World-Heritage listed Fraser island. Titled On The Edge, this exhibition of large paintings takes a detailed, reverent look at the landscape of Fraser Island. On tour from Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. OuterSpace features a dynamic work by local sculptor, Paddy Redmond in April. His installation, Blind Faith, considers aspects of his Catholic cultural heritage, memory and childhood. HASTINGS CHORAL FESTIVAL CONCERTS

Part of the Hastings Choral Festival. The first concert will feature one of Australia's top female vocal ensembles, The Humming Birds. MILKSHAKES SUNDAES AND CAFE CULTURE

Bringing together stories from several cafes in country towns, with a NSW focus. From the first milk bar to open in Australia, to cafes that have been run by the same family for over 90 years, the stories and images are remarkable and tell a great deal about our migrant history, culinary culture and heritage. The Tour at Inverell also adds a local component that expands this story to include the local community. This exhibition is toured by the MGF with objects provided by the local community. SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT

Works by Cath Barcan, Karen Findels, Annabell Nowlan and Jo PurseyExplores the experiences of four emerging contemporary artists who grew up in regional NSW
and moved to the city to study and develop their careers. The artists return home regularly and have produced work based on their experiences and emotions. TATHRA BODYWEATHER WORKSHOP
4 - 13 June, Tathra

Ten day intensive, exploratory physical training on the Sapphire Coast. An open exploration and re-examination of the body, Bodyweather draws on elements of both Eastern and Western dance, sports training, martial arts, and theatre practice. Bodyweather was founded by Butoh dancer Min Tanaka and his Mai-Juku Performance Company in Japan. As a former member of the company, workshop leader Tess de Quincey says Bodyweather is a broad based and comprehensive training system that can be used as pure body/mind research or as professional dance performance training. NCOSS INSURANCE PROGRAM - MID NORTH COAST
NCOSS is currently implementing an insurance program which consists of establishing a bulk buying insurance scheme and providing insurance information and training to the not for profit sector - including Risk Management. A training program has been developed to assist not for profit organisations increase their insurance knowledge. NCOSS has also secured a public liability insurer. WINDMILL TRUST SCHOLARSHIP FOR NSW REGIONAL ARTISTS
The Windmill Trust Scholarship was founded in 1997 in memory of Penny Meagher, former Director of the Macquarie Galleries and a lifetime supporter of regional arts. NAVA administers the scholarship (with the assistance of the Museums and Galleries Foundation of NSW). This $5,000 scholarship is open to artists working in printmaking, drawing, painting and sculpture, who need financial assistance to resume their career, interrupted due to extenuating circumstances. LADY MOLLIE ASKIN BALLET TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP
Established in 1982 for the furtherance of culture and the advancement of education in Australia, this is a biennail award providing providing travelling scholarships to young Australian ballet dancers aged 17-30 of outstanding ability and promise. Each scholarship is for between two years and five years and may be utilised for study maintenance and travel either in Australia or overseas. Young painters, sculptors and photographers are invited to apply for this year's awards, offering four scholarships of $5,000 each for overseas educational travel. Assistance is provided for travelling (for educational purposes) and/or tuition costs of young people embarking on a career in the visual arts. Overseas travel (preferably for the first time) to undertake formal study, a residency or a planned program with a professional artist or mentor will be considered, as will informal study for a planned research project. Valued at $40,000, this scholarship is intended to enable an artist, at the outset of their career, to undertake further art studies overseas at a recognised art institution, or to undertake a study program with a senior artist, for one to two years. The Australian Government's grants program for performing arts touring. Applications are sought from performing arts presenters, touring organisations and companies planning tours commencing from 1 January 2005. YOUNG FILMMAKERS FUND
The Young Filmmakers Fund (YFF) provides grants of up to $30,000 towards film production or post-production costs. There is no restriction on format (eg film or tape), subject matter, genre or type of film. The YFF has funded short drama films, documentaries, animation projects and experimental films. To be eligible for funding, you must be a NSW resident aged 18-35 years and you must produce your project entirely in NSW. THE 2005 ANNE & GORDON SAMSTAG INTERNATIONAL VISUAL ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS
The University of South Australia offers the scholarships on behalf of the Trustee of the estate of Gordon Samstag. Each 2005 scholarship includes, for twelve months of overseas study, a tax-exempt stipend equivalent to US$30,000 plus return airfares and institutional fees for one academic year. SNOWYfest FILM FESTIVAL
18-19 June, Thredbo

The purpose of the SNOWYfest Film Festival is to encourage and support the wide range of filmmaking talent in Australia, and to encourage the sharing of new film ideas, styles and skills from overseas with the Australian community. The 2004 festival offers two categories of competition. The main event is open to filmmakers from around Australia and overseas, with cash prizes offered for Best Film ($2,500) and First Runner Up ($500). A second competition aims to encourage local filmmaking talent in the Thredbo-Snowy River region of NSW and offers a cash prize for Best Film ($500). Finalists of both competitions will screen on the weekend of June 18-19 at Thredbo over three sessions, followed by an awards presentation and after-party. RECONCILIATION ART PRIZE - ALBURY-WODONGA
A $1,000 prize is being offered for an artwork on the theme of 'Reconciliation' by an Indigenous or non-Indigenous artist from the Albury-Wodonga region. AlburyCity is committed to supporting Reconciliation among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. The Reconciliation Art Prize aims to raise the profile of the ongoing Reconciliation process, which looks to find new ways to overcome problems and connect with one another. CASINO BEEF WEEK ART EXHIBITION
Artists and photographers of all ages are invited to submit entries to the Casino Beef Week Art Exhibition 2004. The total value of all prizes is well over $1,500, all donated by many generous business in the Casino area. DESIGN A NEW LOGO FOR ARTS OUTWEST
To celebrate their 30th anniversary, Arts OutWest is calling on the abundance of talent of the arts community in the central west to help design a new logo. A cash prize of $200 and a voucher for arts materials from Pigments and Pallets in Bathurst, is on offer. As the regional arts and cultural development service for the central west, AOW's role is to promote, facilitate and advocate for arts and cultural development for the communities of the region including: Bathurst, Blayney, Cabonne, Cowra, Evans, Forbes, Lithgow, Lachlan, Mudgee, Oberon, Orange, Parkes and Wellington. 2004 HARP COMPOSITION COMPETITION
A competition to recognise and promote the creative talents of Australian composers and to contribute to the growth and excellence of harp music in Australia. The winning composition will be premiered as part of the New Music Workshop during the National Harp Weekend in Canberra in September. Money for Visual ArtistsMONEY FOR VISUAL ARTISTS
Just released - the National Association for the Visual Arts' (NAVA) guide to awards, prizes and professional development opportunities for visual artists. The 2004-2005 guide caters for artistic creators at professional, student and hobbyist levels and lists more than 450 opportunities. This edition also includes advice on what to take into account when entering an award, including information on insurance, copyright, tax and freight. REGIONAL CINEMA e-MAILING PROMOTIONAL LIST

NEW INDIGENOUS YOUTH WEBSITE AT ABC ONLINE
Called Message Club, this site offers a space for Australia's Indigenous youth to speak about their culture, share their lives and to impart Australia's Indigenous history through interactive content and imaginative designs. REVISED NSW CULTURAL STATISTICS
The National Centre for Culture and Recreation Statistics of the Australian Bureau of Statistics has provided the NSW Ministry for the Arts with revised summaries of available data for the cultural sector in New South Wales. THE ROLE OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN BUILDING SOCIAL CAPITAL - A NEW REPORT
'What Makes Communities Tick?', a report by the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) and the University of Queensland (UQ) 'Boilerhouse' Community Services and Research Centre (CSRC) is a result of the first stage of a project to identify the role of Local Government in building social capital. A number of common findings emerged over the course of the project which have been worked into practical recommendations to form the basis of a whole-of-government action plan during 2004.
